How are perfume decants made? Perfume is moved from its original bottle into a smaller atomiser, either by spraying it through a funnel or by drawing it out with a syringe or pipette after the sprayer is removed. A clean container and a tight seal then protect the perfume until it reaches you.

The liquid is the point; the container simply makes it portable. Our guide to [what a perfume decant is](https://10ml.com/guides/what-is-a-perfume-decant) explains how it differs from a miniature bottle. Here, we look at the transfer itself, the materials that matter, the way a small fill responds to air and light, and what 10ML says about its own decanting.

## Five perfumes for a first 3ml order

Start with five contrasting styles, from bright citrus and clean florals to rich woods and amber.

## The two common ways to decant perfume

Both methods start with the same idea: take perfume out of one bottle and put it into another without adding anything. The difference is whether the original spray head stays in place.

### Spraying through a funnel

The original sprayer can stay on the bottle. Its nozzle is aimed at a small funnel placed in the neck of the empty atomiser, and each spray sends perfume through the funnel into the new container. The transfer stops when the atomiser holds the chosen size, after which its spray assembly is fitted and closed.

This approach keeps the original bottle's spray mechanism in place. It also makes the transfer easy to watch. A narrow funnel helps direct the liquid, while a steady hand keeps the nozzle aligned. Spraying into open air would lose part of the mist, which is why nozzle, funnel and atomiser should sit close together.

The funnel needs to be clean and dry before it touches the perfume. Water left from washing, dust or residue from another scent would all end up in the fill. The same goes for the receiving atomiser: the container is part of the process, not an afterthought.

### Drawing perfume out with a syringe or pipette

Another general method is to remove the original sprayer and draw liquid directly from the bottle. A syringe or pipette goes into the perfume, the required amount is drawn up, and the liquid is released into the small atomiser. This is a direct liquid transfer rather than a series of sprays.

It allows the person decanting to work from the liquid in the bottle instead of catching a mist. Clean equipment is essential again, and each part that touches the perfume needs to be free of moisture and old residue. The atomiser is then closed promptly so the fill is not left open unnecessarily.

Not every bottle is designed to be opened in this way, and forcing a fitted sprayer can damage it. That is one reason the spray-and-funnel route exists. These are general decanting methods, not a description of what any particular shop does.

## Why a clean glass atomiser and a tight seal matter

A small atomiser has one job beyond holding liquid: keep the perfume smelling as it did in its bottle. Clean glass is a useful material because it gives the perfume a smooth, non-porous home and does not bring an old scent with it when the atomiser is fresh. It also lets you see the fill level and notice anything unusual before use.

Clean means more than rinsed. A freshly washed atomiser that still holds water is not ready, because the remaining droplets meet the perfume during filling. A used atomiser can also carry traces of its previous contents in the dip tube and spray head. Starting with a fresh, dry atomiser avoids those problems without needing to mask them later.

The closure matters just as much. A properly fitted spray head limits leaking and reduces the exchange between the liquid and the air outside. The cap adds protection around the nozzle, but it does not make a loose spray assembly airtight. If the atomiser feels damp around the neck or the mechanism moves when it should be fixed, the seal deserves attention.

A clear label completes the container. It should tell you which perfume is inside and which size you ordered, so several similar atomisers do not become a guessing game in a drawer.

## How air, heat and light affect a small fill

Air meets perfume at the surface and through every opening. As a decant is used, the empty space above the liquid grows, leaving more air inside the atomiser. Oxygen can gradually change fragrance materials, especially when the container is opened often or the closure does not sit tightly. A small fill is therefore best treated as something to enjoy, not something to leave half-used and forgotten.

Heat adds another source of stress. A warm windowsill, a heater or a car can raise the temperature of a little glass container quickly. Repeated warming and cooling is unhelpful too, so a steady, cool spot is a better choice than somewhere convenient but changeable.

Light is easiest to control. Direct sun reaches both the liquid and the space around it, combining light exposure with warmth. A closed drawer, a wardrobe shelf or a small box keeps it dark without any special equipment.

For everyday storage, keep the decant upright with its cap on, away from direct light and in a room with a steady temperature. A steamy bathroom and a parked car are poor long-term homes. Our guide to [how to store perfume](https://10ml.com/guides/how-to-store-perfume) looks at those storage spots in more detail.

## How 10ML fills its decants

10ML states that every decant starts with a full bottle of the original perfume. Its bottles come from authorized EU distributors and directly from the brands. Every atomiser is filled by hand, straight from the house's bottle, with nothing added and nothing diluted.

Once filled, each atomiser is sealed, and its label names the perfume and gives the size, 3ml or 10ml. The name on the label belongs to the perfume created by that house; 10ML makes no perfume of its own.

The funnel, syringe and pipette methods above describe decanting in general, not the tools 10ML uses. The [10ML authenticity page](https://10ml.com/authenticity) sets out the source, hand-filling, sealing and labelling in one place.

## What to check when a decant arrives

Start with the container before judging the scent. These checks take only a moment and tell you whether the atomiser matches the order.

- Read the label and check the perfume's name and size. If you selected a particular concentration, check that the listing and label refer to the version you ordered.
- Look around the neck and spray assembly for dampness or signs of leaking. The atomiser should be sealed and intact.
- Try the spray over a tissue or on skin. The mechanism should produce a spray rather than drip from a loose fitting.
- Keep the atomiser upright and put its cap back on after use. Store it away from light and heat from the outset.
- Wear the perfume through its opening, heart and dry-down before forming an impression. The first spray alone shows only part of it.

A travel atomiser is meant to look different from the house's full bottle. The useful checks are therefore the label, the seal, the spray and the perfume as it develops. Judging the seller is a separate question, covered by our [checklist for judging a decant shop](https://10ml.com/guides/are-perfume-decants-authentic). If you are examining a boxed bottle instead, use the guide to [how to check if perfume is authentic](https://10ml.com/guides/how-to-check-perfume-is-authentic).

## Five perfumes for a first 3ml order

A first order can cover five distinct directions: rich floral woods, bright citrus and tea, fruit with smoky woods, a clean white floral and a warm amber extrait. Together, they make a varied first decant wardrobe.

### Guidance by Amouage

[Guidance](https://10ml.com/perfumes/amouage-guidance) is an Eau de Parfum from 2023, listed for women. Pear, hazelnut and olibanum make a nutty, resinous opening. Osmanthus, rose, saffron and jasmine sambac fill the heart, before sandalwood, vanilla, akigalawood, ambergris and labdanum bring a woody, amber dry-down.

The mix of fruity, nutty, floral and warm spicy accords suits going out, particularly when you want a rich scent rather than a sheer one. Most community voters rate its longevity "eternal". Sillage votes lean "strong", then "enormous". Fall and winter collect the most seasonal votes. Night and evening top the time-of-day choices.

### Imagination by Louis Vuitton

[Imagination](https://10ml.com/perfumes/louis-vuitton-imagination) dates from 2021 and is listed for men. Citron, Calabrian [bergamot](https://10ml.com/notes/bergamot) and Sicilian orange give it a citrus opening. Tunisian neroli, Nigerian ginger and Ceylon cinnamon add floral and fresh spicy facets, while Chinese black tea, ambroxan, guaiac wood and olibanum sit underneath.

Its citrus, green and aromatic accords make it a useful contrast to the richer picks here. For longevity, the larger share of voters picks "long lasting". Asked about sillage, most of them vote "moderate". It gets picked for spring, fall and winter. Day, office and evening wear lead the time-of-day vote.

### Aventus by Creed

Creed released [Aventus](https://10ml.com/perfumes/creed-aventus) in 2010 as an Eau de Parfum, listed for men. Apple and black currant meet lemon, bergamot and pink pepper at the opening. The heart moves to Moroccan jasmine, pineapple and patchouli. At the base, cedarwood and birch join oak moss, ambroxan and musk, giving the dry-down its woody, smoky and musky character.

The fruit at the start and the birch-led dry-down give a 3ml wear test two clear stages to follow, and its listed occasion is going out. The longevity vote leans "long lasting", and "eternal" is the runner-up. Sillage votes lean "strong" over "moderate". In the seasonal vote it is a spring and summer choice. By time of day, voters pick it for daytime.

### Valaya by Parfums de Marly

[Valaya](https://10ml.com/perfumes/parfums-de-marly-valaya) is a women's perfume from 2023. Aldehydes, white peach, bergamot and mandarin orange open with bright fruit and an aldehydic lift. Orange blossom, lily-of-the-valley, vetiver and mahonia bring white floral and fresh facets to the heart. Musk, ambroxan, akigalawood and vanilla form the base.

Its musky, powdery and fresh accords suit the office, and anyone comparing a clean floral with sweeter styles. Longevity votes lean "long lasting", then "moderate". Sillage votes reverse that order: "moderate" first, "strong" next. Spring is the season voters pick most. Their time-of-day choice is day wear.

### Baccarat Rouge 540 Extrait by Maison Francis Kurkdjian

[Baccarat Rouge 540 Extrait](https://10ml.com/perfumes/maison-francis-kurkdjian-baccarat-rouge-540-extrait) is a unisex Extrait de Parfum from 2017. Bitter almond and saffron lead the opening. Egyptian jasmine and Virginia cedar form the heart, while ambergris, woody notes, musk, ambroxan and cashmeran build an amber, musky base.

This is the warm, almond-tinged counterpoint in the five, with white floral and woody facets behind the spice. Community votes on its longevity lean "eternal", followed by "long lasting". Sillage votes lean "strong", with "enormous" next. Winter and fall draw the most seasonal votes. Night and evening come first for time of day.

## Start small, then choose the size that fits

A 3ml decant is the discovery size, with around 60 sprays. That leaves room to wear a scent past its opening and in the setting it suits. Once one of them earns a place, a 10ml decant holds around 200 sprays for weeks of wear.

For a first 3ml order, choose contrast rather than five versions of one mood. Pair Imagination or Valaya with Guidance or Baccarat Rouge 540 Extrait, and use Aventus to put fruit beside smoky woods. Store each atomiser closed and dark, then let a few real wears decide which one deserves a 10ml decant.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is a perfume decant?

A perfume decant is a portion of perfume moved from its original bottle into a smaller atomiser. It lets you wear the perfume without buying the full bottle first.

### How do decant shops fill small atomisers?

The two general methods are spraying perfume through a funnel into the atomiser, or removing the original sprayer and using a syringe or pipette to transfer the liquid. These descriptions explain the methods in general, not the practice of any named shop.

### Can you decant perfume without removing the sprayer?

Yes. One general method leaves the original sprayer in place and directs its spray into a funnel fitted to the small atomiser. Clean, dry equipment and a close fit help keep the transfer tidy.

### Why does a decant need a tight seal?

A tight seal helps prevent leaks and limits the exchange of air around the perfume. A cap protects the nozzle, but the spray assembly itself still needs to be properly fitted.

### How should you store a small perfume decant?

Keep it upright, closed and away from direct light, heat and repeated temperature changes. A drawer or wardrobe shelf is a better home than a bathroom, windowsill or car.

### How many sprays are in a 3ml decant?

A 3ml decant gives around 60 sprays. For comparison, a 10ml decant gives around 200 sprays.
