Oud is the dark, fragrant resin that forms inside the wood of the agarwood tree, and an oud perfume smells woody, smoky and resinous, often with a leathery or faintly medicinal edge. It runs from soft, polished woods like [Oud Wood by Tom Ford](https://10ml.com/perfumes/tom-ford-oud-wood) to dark, smoky ones like [Interlude Man by Amouage](https://10ml.com/perfumes/amouage-interlude-man).

This guide explains what oud is and what it smells like, then lays out sixteen oud perfumes as a ladder, with a table that compares them side by side, so you can climb it one 3ml at a time.

## An oud ladder, from soft to dark

Twelve of the sixteen oud perfumes in this guide, from the gentlest to the darkest, in the order they appear.

## What oud is

Oud, also called agarwood, comes from the heartwood of Aquilaria trees, which grow in South and Southeast Asia. Healthy wood from these trees is pale and smells of very little. As the [Wikipedia entry on agarwood](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agarwood) explains, when the tree is infected by a mould it defends itself by flooding the wood with a dark, oily resin. That resin-soaked [wood is oud](https://10ml.com/guides/oud-wood-vs-tobacco-vanille). It can be burnt as incense or distilled into an oil, and it has been treasured for centuries across the Middle East and Asia.

Good natural oud is rare, slow to form and very expensive. Overharvesting has thinned the wild trees, and every Aquilaria species is now listed under CITES Appendix II, so its international trade is monitored. Only a few houses use much real oud; most build an oud accord, a blend made to evoke the wood, sometimes with a little of the real oil inside. That is not a trick. Most notes in perfumery are built this way, and it explains why two oud perfumes can smell so unlike each other.

Which trees produce it, and where they grow wild, is set out in [the Wikipedia article on Aquilaria](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aquilaria).

The Arabic word means a piece of wood. Our [oud decants](https://10ml.com/notes/agarwood-oud) page lists every oud perfume we carry. This article is for the step before that list: working out which kind of oud you actually want.

## What does oud smell like?

On its own, oud is complex and not always pretty. At the centre it is woody and resinous, darker and denser than cedar or sandalwood. Around that core you may pick up smoke, leather, a dry earthiness, a sweetness close to honey or dried fruit, and, in stronger oils, a barnyard tang that people either love or cannot bear.

Perfumers rarely serve it alone. They soften and steer it with partners, and the partner decides most of what you smell:

- **Rose** makes it lush and velvety. Rose with oud is the traditional pairing and the gentlest place to begin. Our [rose note page](https://10ml.com/notes/rose) gathers the rest.
- **Saffron** brings a warm, leathery, slightly metallic spice, and turns up beside oud more than almost any other note. See [saffron](https://10ml.com/notes/saffron).
- **Vanilla, amber and tonka** round it into something sweet and cosy.
- **Incense and leather** push it towards the dark end. See [incense](https://10ml.com/notes/incense) and [leather](https://10ml.com/notes/leather).
- **Clean woods and musk** make it quiet and polished, oud as a texture rather than a statement.

## Why oud is so easy to regret buying blind

Oud is the note people most often buy on reputation and then find they cannot wear. The word promises something rich and rare. The reality on your skin could be a soft, rosy wood or a room-filling smoke, and a notes list rarely tells you which. The same four letters cover a quiet office scent and a perfume made for winter nights.

It also changes as it dries. Many oud perfumes open with their brightest notes, and the oud shows its real face later, once those have gone. A spray on a paper strip tells you little. A full day on your own skin tells you a lot.

So do not start with the darkest oud you can find. Start at the soft end, wear it for a few days, and move one step darker only when you want more. The ladder below is built for that. If you are new to choosing from notes alone, read [how to choose perfume without smelling it](https://10ml.com/guides/how-to-choose-perfume-without-smelling-it) before you pick.

## Step one: soft, woody ouds

These use oud as a warm grain in the wood rather than the headline. If you have never worn oud, begin here.

### Oud Wood by Tom Ford

[Oud Wood](https://10ml.com/perfumes/tom-ford-oud-wood) opens with oud, rosewood and cardamom, moves into Sichuan pepper, sandalwood and vanilla, and settles on vetiver, tonka bean and amber. Smooth, creamy wood with a light peppery lift: the oud is there, but polished. It launched in 2007, is presented for men, and its listed occasion is work, which makes it a natural first rung.

### Royal Oud by Creed

[Royal Oud](https://10ml.com/perfumes/creed-royal-oud) starts bright, with pink pepper, lemon and Sicilian bergamot, turns green and woody with cedar, angelica and galbanum, and only then brings in sandalwood, oud and musk. The citrus-and-green opening makes it the freshest oud in this guide, and the easiest to wear by day.

### Wonderwood by Comme des Garçons

[Wonderwood](https://10ml.com/perfumes/comme-des-garcons-wonderwood), composed by Antoine Lie and launched in 2010, is a study in woods. Bergamot, Madagascar pepper, caraway and nutmeg lead into cypress, Virginia cedar, incense and vetiver, then sandalwood, [guaiac wood](https://10ml.com/notes/guaiac-wood), oud, cashmeran and patchouli. Dry, spiced and clean, with oud as one wood among several.

## Step two: rose and oud

Rose is the partner oud is most often paired with, and the easiest way to hear the oud itself without being overwhelmed by it. This step runs from fruity and rosy to deep and dark.

The rose oil perfumers prize most is distilled from damask roses, grown above all in Bulgaria and Turkey, as [the Wikipedia article on rose oil](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rose_oil) explains.

### Delina Exclusif by Parfums de Marly

[Delina Exclusif](https://10ml.com/perfumes/parfums-de-marly-delina-exclusif) opens with litchi, pear, bergamot, grapefruit and pink pepper, then sets Turkish rose beside oud and incense in the heart, over vanilla, amber, woody notes, musk and vetiver. Fruity and rosy at first, with the oud and incense adding shadow underneath. It launched in 2018 and is presented for women.

### Halfeti by Penhaligon's

[Halfeti](https://10ml.com/perfumes/penhaligons-halfeti) begins with cypress leaf, saffron, cardamom, artemisia, bergamot and grapefruit, softens into jasmine, Bulgarian rose and nutmeg, and dries down to oud, cedar, leather, sandalwood, amber, tonka bean, vanilla and musk. Spiced rose on a warm, faintly leathery wood, an easy next step after the woody ouds.

### Noir de Noir by Tom Ford

[Noir de Noir](https://10ml.com/perfumes/tom-ford-noir-de-noir) opens with saffron and black truffle, blooms into rose, oud and black dahlia, and rests on vanilla, patchouli, tree moss and styrax. A dark rose with an earthy, truffled depth. It launched in 2007 and is unisex, made for autumn and winter evenings.

### Black Aoud by Montale

[Black Aoud](https://10ml.com/perfumes/montale-black-aoud), launched in 2006, has the shortest formula on this ladder: rose on top, oud and patchouli in the heart, musk underneath. Few notes, none of them shy. It is the bridge between the rosy ouds and the dark ones, so try it before you climb higher, and start with one spray.

## Step three: sweet and spiced ouds

Here oud meets praline, vanilla, tonka and warm spice. The oud is fuller than on the first two steps, but sugar and spice keep it approachable.

### Arabians Tonka by Montale

[Arabians Tonka](https://10ml.com/perfumes/montale-arabians-tonka) opens with saffron and bergamot, puts oud beside Bulgarian rose in the heart, and sweetens the base with amber, tonka bean, sugar cane, white musk and oakmoss. Sugared rose over oud, the sweet end of the rose-and-oud style. It launched in 2019 and is unisex.

### Alexandria II by Xerjoff

[Alexandria II](https://10ml.com/perfumes/xerjoff-alexandria-ii) layers palisander rosewood, lavender, cinnamon and apple over rose, cedar and lily-of-the-valley, with oud, sandalwood, amber, vanilla and musk in the base. Lavender and cinnamon over a warm, sweet wood, with the oud arriving late and staying smooth.

### Haltane by Parfums de Marly

[Haltane](https://10ml.com/perfumes/parfums-de-marly-haltane) pairs clary sage, lavender and bergamot with saffron and praline, then lets oud and cedar take over. Herbal and sweet at first, then a drier, more serious wood. It launched in 2021 and is presented for men.

### Red Tobacco by Mancera

[Red Tobacco](https://10ml.com/perfumes/mancera-red-tobacco) is a crowded, warm composition. Cinnamon, nutmeg, oud, incense, saffron, green apple and white pear come first; patchouli and jasmine sit in the heart; guaiac wood, Haitian vetiver, tobacco, Madagascar vanilla, amber, sandalwood and white musk fill the base. Spiced apple and tobacco over a sweet, smoky wood, and one of the gentlest prices per ml on this ladder.

## Step four: dark, smoky and leathery ouds

The top of the ladder. Incense, leather and resin, with oud front and centre. Reach for these once you know you like oud in its gentler forms.

### Ombre Nomade by Louis Vuitton

[Ombre Nomade](https://10ml.com/perfumes/louis-vuitton-ombre-nomade) puts oud at the very start, softened by raspberry, then moves through rose, saffron and geranium to frankincense and benzoin. Smoky, resinous and dark, with a faint berry glow in the first minutes. It launched in 2018 and is unisex.

### Oud for Greatness by Initio Parfums Prives

Oud for Greatness keeps to a short list: lavender, nutmeg and saffron, then agarwood, then musk and patchouli. A dense, saffron-spiced wood with a lavender lift at the start. It launched in 2018 and is presented for men.

### African Leather by Memo Paris

[African Leather](https://10ml.com/perfumes/memo-paris-african-leather) opens on cardamom, geranium and pink pepper, puts rose, cinnamon and patchouli in the heart, and settles on amber, leather and oud. Spiced, earthy leather, with an animalic edge under the warmth.

### Interlude Man by Amouage

[Interlude Man](https://10ml.com/perfumes/amouage-interlude-man) opens with oregano, pepper and bergamot, burns through incense, opoponax, amber and labdanum, and ends on oud, leather, sandalwood and patchouli. Smoke and resin in quantity, herbal at first and dark by the end. This is one to wear with care.

### Epic Man by Amouage

Epic Man starts with a long line of spices and resins: pink pepper, olibanum, saffron, nutmeg, cardamom, caraway, mace and myrtle. Myrrh and geranium follow, and the base gathers incense, oud, leather, castoreum, patchouli, cedar, styrax and musk. Incense and spice over dark wood and leather.

## The oud ladder at a glance

Here is every rung in one place. The last column is the live price per ml of a 10ml decant, which is where oud perfumes differ most: the same step can hold a scent at a modest price and one at several times that.

**Sixteen oud perfumes by step, partner notes and price per ml**

| Perfume | Step | Oud's partners | Character | Per ml (10ml) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Oud Wood | Soft | Rosewood, cardamom, vanilla | Creamy, polished wood | €4.93/ml |
| Royal Oud | Soft | Lemon, galbanum, cedar | Fresh, green wood | €3.63/ml |
| Wonderwood | Soft | Pepper, cypress, guaiac wood | Dry, spiced woods | €2.22/ml |
| Delina Exclusif | Rose | Turkish rose, litchi, incense | Fruity, rosy | €4.13/ml |
| Halfeti | Rose | Bulgarian rose, saffron, leather | Spiced rose | €3.73/ml |
| Noir de Noir | Rose | Rose, black truffle, patchouli | Dark, earthy rose | €4.73/ml |
| Black Aoud | Rose | Rose, patchouli, musk | Bold, few notes | €2.15/ml |
| Arabians Tonka | Sweet | Rose, tonka bean, sugar cane | Sugared rose | €2.51/ml |
| Alexandria II | Sweet | Lavender, cinnamon, vanilla | Smooth, sweet wood | €6.01/ml |
| Haltane | Sweet | Clary sage, praline, cedar | Herbal, then dry | €3.05/ml |
| Red Tobacco | Sweet | Cinnamon, apple, tobacco | Spiced, smoky, sweet | €1.82/ml |
| Ombre Nomade | Dark | Raspberry, saffron, frankincense | Smoky, resinous | €5.72/ml |
| Oud for Greatness | Dark | Lavender, saffron, patchouli | Dense, spiced | see the product page |
| African Leather | Dark | Cardamom, cinnamon, leather | Earthy leather | €3.42/ml |
| Interlude Man | Dark | Oregano, incense, labdanum | Heavy smoke and resin | €3.93/ml |
| Epic Man | Dark | Olibanum, myrrh, castoreum | Incense and leather | see the product page |

Price does not follow darkness. Two of the Montale ouds and Red Tobacco sit near the bottom of the price range, while Ombre Nomade and Alexandria II sit near the top, so a small decant is the fair way to compare them.

## Oud perfume for men, for women, or both?

Oud has no gender, and the labels on this list show it: several are presented for men, one for women and four as unisex. In practice the partner notes matter more than the label. Rose-and-oud blends such as Delina Exclusif, Noir de Noir and Arabians Tonka suit anyone who likes a rich floral. The woody and leathery ouds, from Oud Wood to Epic Man, read drier and more traditional. If you are shopping for someone else, go by the perfumes they already wear: a rose lover starts on step two, a fan of clean woods on step one.

## How to wear oud

- **Start with one spray.** Many oud perfumes are dense, so add a second only once you know how the first behaves on you.
- **Wear it in the cold first.** Oud's resin and smoke feel most at home in autumn and winter, and our [winter perfumes](https://10ml.com/winter-perfumes) page gathers more warm scents for the season.
- **Give it the whole day.** Oud often shows its character in the dry-down, hours after you spray, so judge it in the afternoon rather than in the first minute.
- **Soften it if you need to.** A dark oud worn under a simple rose or a clean musk can feel much easier. Our [perfume layering guide](https://10ml.com/guides/perfume-layering-guide) has pairings to try.

## Climb the ladder before you buy the bottle

Oud rewards patience, and the only honest way to know which oud suits you is to live with it on your own skin. Here is a simple way to climb the ladder without a blind buy.

1. **Take one from each step.** Four 3ml decants, one soft, one rosy, one sweet and one dark, give you the whole range. At around 60 sprays apiece, a 3ml covers roughly a week of real wear.
2. **Wear them in order.** Begin at the soft end and move up only when you want more. Many people stop happily at the rose step, and that is a perfectly good place to stop.
3. **Size up once you are sure.** A 10ml decant holds around 200 sprays, which carries you through several weeks of daily wear. A 30ml holds around 600 sprays at the lowest price per ml, for the oud you reach for every cold evening.

Every oud we carry sits on our [oud note page](https://10ml.com/notes/agarwood-oud). For a shorter list, see [best oud perfumes](https://10ml.com/guides/best-oud-perfumes) and [oud perfumes for men](https://10ml.com/guides/oud-perfumes-for-men). The rose step has more company in [rose perfumes](https://10ml.com/guides/rose-perfumes), and the dark end borders [leather perfumes](https://10ml.com/guides/leather-perfumes) and [amber perfumes](https://10ml.com/guides/amber-perfumes). Most of the perfumes above come from niche houses, and our explainer on [niche vs designer perfume](https://10ml.com/guides/niche-vs-designer-perfume) sets out what that means. For a wider starting set, see [niche perfumes to try](https://10ml.com/guides/best-niche-perfumes-to-try), and for why a small bottle beats guessing, read our page on the [blind-buy alternative](https://10ml.com/guides/blind-buy-alternative).

## Frequently asked questions

### What is oud?

Oud is the dark, fragrant resin that forms inside the heartwood of the agarwood tree when the tree is wounded and infected by a mould. The resin-soaked wood is burnt as incense or distilled into an oil, and in perfume the name usually refers to an oud accord that recreates its effect.

### What does oud smell like?

Oud smells woody, smoky and resinous, darker and denser than cedar or sandalwood. Depending on the perfume it can lean leathery, earthy, honeyed or faintly medicinal, and partners such as rose, saffron or vanilla change its character a great deal.

### What is oud perfume?

An oud perfume is one built around the note of agarwood, the resin-soaked wood of the Aquilaria tree. Most use an oud accord, a blend that recreates the wood's smoky, resinous character, often paired with rose, saffron, vanilla or leather, so oud perfumes range from soft and polished to dark and smoky.

### What is the best oud perfume for a beginner?

Start with a soft, woody oud or a rose-and-oud blend rather than a dark, smoky one. Oud Wood and Royal Oud use oud as a polished wood, and Halfeti and Delina Exclusif pair it with rose. A 3ml decant of Oud Wood is €18.81, enough to wear it for a week before choosing.

### What is the best oud perfume for men?

It depends on how dark you want to go. Oud Wood and Royal Oud are smooth and easy to wear, Haltane and Red Tobacco add sweetness and spice, and Interlude Man and Epic Man sit at the smoky, leathery end.

### What is the best oud perfume for women?

Many women start with the rose-and-oud style. Delina Exclusif is presented for women and pairs Turkish rose with oud and incense, while unisex choices such as Noir de Noir, Arabians Tonka and Ombre Nomade go richer and darker.

### What does an oud cologne for men smell like?

It depends on where it sits on the ladder. Royal Oud is the freshest in this guide, with pink pepper, lemon and bergamot over cedar, sandalwood and oud, and Oud Wood is smoother, with rosewood and cardamom over sandalwood and vanilla. At the dark end, Interlude Man and Epic Man add incense and leather, so the oud smells smoky rather than polished.

### What are the different types of oud scent?

This guide sorts oud into four types, from soft to dark. Soft, woody ouds use it as a warm grain in the wood. Rose and oud blends pair it with its most common partner. Sweet and spiced ouds add praline, vanilla, tonka or warm spice. Dark, smoky and leathery ouds put incense, leather and resin forward. Start at the soft end and move up one step at a time.

### Why do Muslims and Arabs wear oud?

Because oud has been part of Arab and Islamic life for centuries, worn as perfume and burnt as incense. A hadith in Sahih Muslim records that the Prophet Muhammad scented himself with the smoke of plain oud wood, and oud chips are traditionally burnt in mosques. In many Arab countries, bakhoor incense is also passed among guests as a gesture of hospitality and burnt on Fridays and at weddings, so oud's smoky, resinous scent is one many people grow up with.

### Is the smell of oud attractive?

To many people, yes: oud smells rich and compelling, though others find it too heavy, and the barnyard tang of stronger oils divides opinion. A soft, woody oud such as Oud Wood is the easiest place to start; move to the darker, smokier ones only if you like it.
