Aus Liebe zum Duft

This shop sells discovery sets assembled by the houses themselves, so one box shows the range of a single house. It also lets you pick single samples one by one, which suits a buyer who knows two or three perfumes the recipient likes. Its gift cards come in amounts from small to large and arrive by email. Its free-delivery threshold is lower than 10ML's, which matters for a small order.

Woodberg

Woodberg offers a Sample Box where you choose the scents, plus ready-made Fragrance Boxes and house sets. Its gift card can carry a gift message, a thoughtful detail when the card is the whole present. Delivery has one caveat worth reading: orders with samples currently take longer to arrive than a normal order, so it is a poor choice for a gift needed soon. Its free-delivery threshold is also lower than 10ML's.

Parfinity

Parfinity builds its offer around the Parfinity Box, where you choose scents and receive a discount code to use later, and around curated boxes. Its gift cards come in a wide range of amounts. Delivery is free with every Parfinity Box, and for boxes and samples its free-delivery threshold is lower than 10ML's.

Where these shops are stronger than 10ML, it is on price of entry and on delivery: a small sample order costs less to send, and free delivery starts sooner. Where 10ML is stronger is on what the recipient ends up holding: a perfume they can wear for weeks, not a small sample made for a first sniff.

Lira by Xerjoff launched in 2011 and is part of the set for her. Its notes include blood orange, bergamot and lavender on top, cinnamon, licorice and jasmine in the heart, and caramel, vanilla and musk at the base. Most community voters rate its sillage "moderate".

Kirke by Tiziana Terenzi

Kirke by Tiziana Terenzi launched in 2015. It opens with passionfruit, peach, pear and raspberry, has lily-of-the-valley at the heart and rests on musk, vanilla, patchouli, heliotrope and sandalwood. Community voters most often pick it for summer and spring.

Hundred Silent Ways by Nishane

How to test a gift before you commit
