Amouage Purpose 50 notes, from opening to dry-down

Purpose 50 is a unisex Extrait de Parfum from Amouage, launched in 2025 and credited to Quentin Bisch. Its opening lists four notes: bergamot, frankincense, pimento and pink pepper. That is a bright, resinous and peppery start, with citrus on one side and church-smoke incense on the other.

The heart is papyrus, rose, sandalwood and vetiver. Rose is the only floral note in that line-up, so it reads as one part of a woody structure rather than a floral heart in its own right. Papyrus and vetiver bring a dry, grassy edge, while sandalwood adds creaminess.

The base lists akigalawood, saffron, suede and vanilla. Saffron and suede give the dry-down its leathery, warm spicy character, and vanilla rounds it off. The listed accords are woody, warm spicy, amber, oud, fresh spicy, leather, aromatic and powdery.

What the community votes say

Most community voters rate Purpose 50's longevity "eternal". Community votes on its sillage lean "enormous", with "strong" next. These are opinions from voters, and your skin and room may tell a different story.

Its season votes favour autumn and winter, and its time-of-day votes evening and night. That fits the notes: incense, saffron and suede tend to read as darker and warmer than a citrus-and-musk day scent.

Treat the votes as a reason to test it in the setting they suggest, not as a rule about when you may wear it. A cool evening is the obvious place to begin, but a 3ml decant lets you try it on an ordinary weekday too.

Purpose 50 and Purpose side by side

The two perfumes share a house, a perfumer and a handful of notes, so it is natural to wonder how they differ. Purpose is an Eau de Parfum from 2023, listed for men. Purpose 50 is the 2025 Extrait de Parfum, listed as unisex. Quentin Bisch is credited with both.

The difference that stands out in the lists is the finish. Purpose ends on akigalawood, saffron, suede and a note named Mystikal, while Purpose 50 swaps that last note for vanilla. Purpose also adds black pepper to its opening, and lists its incense as olibanum, the other name for frankincense. The accord lists are close, though Purpose 50 adds powdery and Purpose adds earthy.

On votes, most community voters rate Purpose's longevity "long lasting", with "eternal" as the runner-up. Most also rate its sillage "strong". Purpose 50 sits one step higher on both counts, according to its voters. Again, those are opinions from wearers, so the best check is your own skin.

A four-day wear test with a 3ml Purpose 50 decant

A 3ml decant holds around 60 sprays. That is enough to repeat the test without asking one morning to settle everything. Judge Purpose 50 after an hour on skin, once the bergamot and pepper have faded, and again later in the day when the base is all that is left.

1. Day one: wear Purpose 50 alone. Spray it on clean skin and do not rub your wrists together. Write down what you notice in the first few minutes, then make your first proper judgement after an hour. Check once more in the evening for the saffron and suede.
2. Day two: repeat the routine. Use the same area of skin and the same number of sprays at about the same time. Compare today's notes with yesterday's. A perfume that behaves the same way twice is easier to understand than a single impression.
3. Day three: wear Purpose. Put the Eau de Parfum on the same area of skin and follow the same hour-by-hour notes. Decide whether the difference at the finish matters to you.
4. Day four: return to the one you preferred. Wear it in a real setting, whether that is an evening out or a day in the office. Read your notes from the other three days and ask whether you would reach for it again.

Test on skin rather than on paper. Paper keeps the opening and loses everything your skin does to the base, which is where Purpose 50 keeps its saffron, suede and vanilla.

Guidance is a 2023 Eau de Parfum by Amouage, also credited to Quentin Bisch and listed for women. The opening lists pear, hazelnut and olibanum, and the heart pairs osmanthus and rose with saffron and jasmine sambac. The base lists sandalwood, vanilla, akigalawood, ambergris and labdanum.

Its accords run from woody, amber and warm spicy to fruity, nutty, sweet, powdery, vanilla, floral and balsamic. Where Purpose 50 is peppery and resinous, Guidance is fruitier and nuttier at the start and floral in the middle.

Most community voters rate its longevity "eternal", and community votes on its sillage lean "strong", with "enormous" next. Voters favour autumn and winter, and night and evening. Tuscan Leather is a 2007 unisex Eau de Parfum from Tom Ford. Raspberry, saffron and thyme open it, jasmine and olibanum make up the heart, and amber, woody notes, suede and leather sit in the base.

Its accords are leather, warm spicy, balsamic, sweet, powdery and animalic. It shares saffron, olibanum and suede with Purpose 50, but it is a different composition, built around leather and a raspberry opening instead of bergamot and pink pepper.

Voters rate its longevity "long lasting" and its sillage "strong". Winter and autumn are the favoured seasons, with evening and night as the times of day. Safran Secret is a 2025 unisex Extrait de Parfum from Maison Crivelli, credited to Gaël Montero. Cardamom and spices open it. Myrrh and saffron form the heart, and blonde woods, cedar and sandalwood make up the base.

Its accords are woody, spicy, warm, earthy and aromatic. The note list is shorter than Purpose 50's, so saffron is easier to follow from the heart onwards, with no suede or vanilla to compete with it.

Voters again put its longevity at "long lasting" and its sillage at "strong". Autumn and winter are the favoured seasons, with evening and night as the times of day. Choose Safran Secret for a saffron-led extrait with myrrh and cedar, and a tidier line-up than the Amouage.

Which decant should you choose?

Stay with Purpose 50 if bergamot, frankincense, saffron, suede and vanilla are what you came to explore. Choose Purpose for the Eau de Parfum with a Mystikal finish, Guidance for pear, hazelnut and jasmine, Tuscan Leather for raspberry and leather, or Safran Secret for saffron with myrrh and cedar.

Start small, wear it for several days, and move up to a 10ml decant only when you are sure.
