What iris smells like on its own

Picture three things at once. First, powder: the dry, fine softness of a face powder or an old compact. Second, butter: a smooth, slightly waxy richness that gives iris its weight. Third, earth: a cool, rooty edge that some noses read as raw carrot or freshly dug soil.

Iris or orris: what is the difference?

Iris is the plant. Orris is the name perfumers use for its root and for the material made from it. The flower itself gives almost no usable scent, so the note you smell comes from the rhizomes, which are dug up, dried and left to age for years before they are processed.

The finished material is often called orris butter, because it is solid at room temperature. It is famously expensive, which is why many perfumes use iris as a supporting note in the heart rather than the whole story. On a note list you may see "iris", "orris" or "orris root". For a reader choosing a perfume, they point to the same powdery, rooty idea.

Why some people call iris "lipstick"

Many classic cosmetics were scented with soft, powdery floral notes of this kind, so for a lot of people iris brings back a mother's handbag or a dressing table. For some that memory is comforting and elegant. For others it smells dusty, old-fashioned or simply like make-up rather than perfume.

There is not much middle ground, and a note list cannot tell you which camp you are in. Iris also changes as it wears. How to tell whether iris suits you

Start from what you already wear. If you like fresh, green scents, begin with the airy group. If sweet perfumes are your comfort zone, begin with the gourmand group, where iris sits under sugar. Then wear it properly. Put it on skin, not paper, and give it a full day. Pay attention to the second half of the wear, when the powder and the rooty warmth come through.
