What coconut smells like in perfume

Coconut in a perfume is rarely the fresh white flesh of the fruit. It is usually a soft, creamy, slightly nutty sweetness that rounds off whatever sits beside it. Because so many beach products carry a coconut scent, a lot of people meet it first on holiday, and that memory is why some coconut perfumes read as sun cream the moment you spray them.

The trick is what the coconut is paired with. Citrus, ginger and green notes pull it towards a bright, fresh day scent. White flowers such as jasmine, ylang-ylang and tuberose make it creamy and warm, the way a floral skin scent feels. Vanilla, sugar and dessert notes make it gourmand. Rum, tobacco and woods take it somewhere darker and made for the evening.

Green and milky coconut

This is the quietest style. Coconut here is a creamy softness under green leaves and fruit, more a texture than a flavour.

Philosykos by Diptyque

Philosykos is a fig perfume first. Fig and fig leaf come first, then green notes, coconut and fig tree sap, and finally cedar and fig tree wood. The coconut gives the green its milky, rounded feel, so it reads as a whole fig tree on a warm afternoon rather than a beach. Olivia Giacobetti composed it for Diptyque in 1996. Le Beau Paradise Garden by Jean Paul Gaultier

Le Beau Paradise Garden starts cool, with mint, ginger, green notes and watery notes. Coconut, fig and salt meet in the heart, and sandalwood with tonka bean warms the base. Fresh and green on top, salty and creamy in the middle. This 2024 release is marketed to men. A clear majority of community voters call its longevity long lasting. Voters picture it on a summer day.

These are the holiday coconuts, but with enough citrus and spice that they never turn into sun cream.

Virgin Island Water by Creed

Virgin Island Water puts coconut straight into the opening beside lime, mandarin and white bergamot. Hibiscus, ginger, jasmine and ylang-ylang follow, and the base is sugar cane, white rum and musk. Zesty and sparkling first, then soft and lightly sweet. Creed released it in 2007 as a unisex scent. A clear majority of community voters describe its sillage as moderate. Voters favour it for summer daytime, and the occasion they name most is work.

Moonlight in Heaven by Kilian

Moonlight in Heaven opens on grapefruit, lemon, pink pepper, clove, green notes and peach. Its heart is the tropical part: mango, coconut, rice, tuberose, orris and lactones. Vetiver, tonka bean, musk, vanilla and heliotrope sit underneath. Juicy fruit and creamy rice, kept from getting heavy by the vetiver. It dates from 2016. For longevity, a clear majority of community voters answer moderate. Summer nights are where voters place it, which makes it a good warm-evening choice.

Creamy floral coconut

Here coconut meets white flowers. The result is warm, soft and skin-like, the style most people picture when they ask for a coconut perfume.

Coco Vanille by Mancera

Coco Vanille opens with coconut and white peach, blooms into tiare flower, ylang-ylang and jasmine, and dries down to Madagascar vanilla, white musk and woody notes. Creamy, floral and sunny, with vanilla holding it together at the end. Mancera launched it in 2016. The community longevity vote tilts towards long lasting, with moderate close behind. Summer, by day or into the evening, is when voters wear it.

Soleil Blanc by Tom Ford

Soleil Blanc is the most polished take on sunny coconut. A spiced start of cardamom, pink pepper, bergamot and pistachio leads into a white floral heart of jasmine, tuberose and ylang-ylang. Benzoin, coconut, tonka bean and amber make up the base. So the coconut arrives late, as a warm glow under the flowers. Tom Ford released it in 2016. Its sillage lands on moderate for a clear majority of community voters. Voters choose it for summer, from daytime into the evening.

The Only One Eau de Parfum Intense by Dolce&Gabbana

The Only One Eau de Parfum Intense starts crisp, with green apple, Italian mandarin and neroli. The heart is jasmine, coconut and orange blossom, and the base is cashmere wood, vanilla and cedar. A clean, bright floral with a creamy centre. It arrived in 2020. Unlike most creamy coconuts here, it is the colder months, autumn and winter, and night-time that community voters pick for it.

Gourmand coconut

In this group coconut is part of dessert. Vanilla, almond, popcorn and caramel push it towards the sweet end, and most of these are cold-weather perfumes.

Vanille Absolu by Montale

Vanille Absolu is the simplest idea here: coconut and vanilla on top, woody notes below. Sweet and warm, like a coconut dessert that has been near the oven. Montale launched it in 2008. The sillage vote tilts towards moderate, with strong as the next choice. Winter is its season in the community vote, and voters wear it at any hour.

Pure XS For Her by Rabanne

Pure XS For Her puts everything sweet up front: popcorn, peach, coconut, vanilla, orange blossom, ylang-ylang and pink pepper. It settles on white musk, sandalwood, ambrette and amberwood. Buttery popcorn and coconut over a soft, musky wood. This one came out in 2018. The longevity vote tilts towards long lasting, ahead of moderate. Voters reach for it on autumn and winter nights.

Hypnotic Poison by Dior

Apricot, plum and coconut open Hypnotic Poison. The heart gathers jasmine, rose, tuberose, lily-of-the-valley, caraway and Brazilian rosewood, and the base is almond, vanilla, musk and sandalwood. Almond and vanilla are what you remember: nutty, powdery and dark-sweet. Dior released it in 1998. Its sillage vote tilts towards strong, ahead of moderate. Winter evenings and nights are where voters put it.

Angel by Mugler

Angel hides its coconut in a crowded opening of cotton candy, bergamot, pineapple, cassis, melon, jasmine and mandarin orange. Honey, red berries, plum and apricot fill the heart, and patchouli, chocolate, caramel and vanilla take over the base. The coconut is a brief flash beside the pineapple before the candy and patchouli arrive. Mugler launched it in 1992. For sillage, the vote tilts to enormous, and strong comes next. Go easy with it: a single spray goes a long way. Voters save it for autumn and winter nights.

Boozy and smoky coconut

Coconut can go dark too. Paired with rum and tobacco it loses every trace of the beach.

Fan Your Flames by Nishane

Fan Your Flames is coconut and rum at the top, tobacco and tonka bean in the heart, and Chinese cedar and oakmoss in the base. Sweet and boozy first, then smoky and mossy as it dries. Nishane released it in 2016 and markets it to men, though the sweetness makes it easy for anyone to wear. A clear majority of community voters put its sillage at strong. Autumn and winter evenings are the voters' choice for it.

How to choose a coconut perfume without smelling it

• Look at the partner notes, not the coconut. Coconut rarely leads on its own. Citrus and ginger mean fresh, white flowers mean creamy, vanilla and almond mean gourmand, and rum or tobacco mean dark.
• Check where the coconut sits. A coconut in the top notes greets you on the first spray. A coconut in the base, as in Soleil Blanc, shows up later as warmth under everything else.

Wear it before you buy the bottle

Coconut is a note people either fall for or tire of within a day, and the only way to know is on your own skin, in your own weather. A first spray tells you little. The dry-down, an hour or three later, is where a coconut perfume either stays creamy or turns into something you did not expect.

1. Start with three styles. Pick one tropical, one creamy floral and one gourmand. They are the three styles furthest from each other, and at around 60 sprays, a 3ml decant lets you live with each for several days.
2. Wear it on a normal day. Put it on for work, a walk or an evening out, not just a quick sniff at the wrist. Notice whether the coconut still pleases you by the afternoon.
3. Size up once you know. A 10ml decant is around 200 sprays, weeks of daily wear, and it fits a pocket. For the one you keep reaching for, a 30ml decant is around 600 sprays at the best value per ml, where the perfume comes in that size.
