Stéphane Humbert Lucas 777 is a French niche house, started in 2013 by a painter turned perfumer whose synaesthesia lets him perceive colours as scents. The perfumes are bold and theatrical: amber, leather and oud underneath, with red berries, osmanthus or lemon for brightness. God of Fire is the loud one, a sweet, tropical burst of fruit. Soleil de Jeddah pairs florals with leather and herbs, and Black Gemstone sinks into amber, wood and balsam. For white flowers, Lady White Snake lays tuberose over a squeeze of citrus. These are dense, dramatic scents, so a small bottle is a sensible way in.
