What does Baccarat Rouge 540 smell like?

Baccarat Rouge 540 by Maison Francis Kurkdjian launched in 2015 and is worn by men and women alike. It opens on saffron and jasmine, a thin, bright top that gives way within minutes to the part people recognise across a room: amberwood and ambergris lifted by Hedione, which keeps the heart airy rather than heavy. Underneath sit fir, cedar, sugar, Ambroxan and oakmoss. Together they make a sweet, mineral, faintly resinous glow that seems to hang in the air around the wearer.

Hedione is a trade name for methyl dihydrojasmonate, a synthetic material with a soft, airy smell close to jasmine.

That combination is the whole difficulty for a clone. Saffron and Ambroxan are easy to buy; the balance between the sugar and the dry, woody air is not.

Eau de Parfum or Extrait?

The house sells two versions, and clone buyers treat them as different targets. The Extrait is its own composition, not simply a stronger spray: bitter almond on top, a deeper base with cashmeran and musk, and a heavier, more ambery wear. Amber Oud Rouge Edition by Al Haramain leads because it is the one owners find closest: a member on Parfumo finds it very close to the original, only a bit darker and less sweet.

The main difference is weight. Parfumo's community puts it in the same order as the original, sweet, then woody, then spicy, but adds a creamy facet that the original's profile does not show.

Parfumo's page for it names Baccarat Rouge 540 under "smells similar", and lists saffron and orange blossom, then jasmine, cedarwood and plum, then amber, fir balsam and oakmoss. That covers more of the original's base than most clones here: the fir, the cedar and the moss are all on the list.

The main difference is volume and fruit. Parfumo's community rates its longevity and sillage lower than the original's, and one member there describes a smooth, sweet blend of Ambroxan, cedar and saffron without the original's sharper edge. A member writing on Fragrantica finds the plum keeps it from matching the original.

Amber Rouge by Orientica is the most expensive clone in this guide, and the one Parfumo connects to both versions: its Parfumo page lists the Eau de Parfum and the Extrait under "smells similar". Its Fragrantica listing gives saffron, jasmine, amberwood, ambergris, cedar and fir resin, close to the original's published notes.

The main difference is sweetness and density. Parfumo lists praline among its notes, and some Fragrantica members find it sweeter and less woody than the original. It is a thicker, more gourmand version of the glow, with less of the airy lift.

Red Temptation by Zara, now sold as Red Zara Temptation, appears in the "smells similar" list on Parfumo's page for Baccarat Rouge 540. Its notes, on Fragrantica, share the saffron and jasmine of the original and close on amber, moss and musk.

The main difference is praline. Fragrantica places it in the heart, next to the jasmine, and it pushes the scent from sugared wood toward dessert. Bitter orange and coriander in the opening also make the first minutes brighter and more peppery than the original's.

Baroque Rouge 540 by Maison Alhambra has the lowest bottle price and the lowest price per ml of the clones we could price. Its Fragrantica listing shares saffron and jasmine up top and an amber base with musk.

The main difference is flowers. Fragrantica adds pear and mandarin to the opening, ylang-ylang and lily to the heart, and cashmere wood to the base, none of which the original lists. On paper that points to a more floral, fruitier route to the amber mood; fir resin and cedar are not on its list.

It suits someone who wants the general impression for everyday wear and is happy to accept a looser match for the lowest outlay. Basis: published notes only, so treat the resemblance as likely rather than proven.

Ana Abiyedh Rouge by Lattafa is also on the "smells similar" list of Parfumo's page for Baccarat Rouge 540. On paper it shares ambergris and oakmoss with the original, and little else.

The main difference is the fruit. Its Fragrantica listing opens on nashi pear, kumquat and bergamot, with caramel and geranium in the heart, so the start is juicier and brighter before a sweet ambery dry-down. Opinion there is split: some call it the closest they have tried, others find it synthetic or unlike the original.

It suits someone curious about the effect who wants the lowest risk, and who can live with a wide spread of opinion. Basis: a named source, Parfumo's similar list, with a mixed reception on Fragrantica.

What every clone gets wrong

No clone in this guide lists the whole base of the original: fir resin, cedar, sugar, Ambroxan and oakmoss together. Each keeps some of it and fills the gap with something easier, usually more sugar, praline, plum or fruit. That is why owners so often describe clones as sweeter or louder. The original's trick is restraint: a lot of sweetness held up by dry wood and mineral air, so it reads as glow rather than dessert.

Ambroxan itself stands in for ambergris, a rare material formed in the gut of sperm whales, and the Wikipedia article on ambergris covers the real material and its synthetic stand-ins.

The second gap is the opening. Saffron and jasmine are brief in the original, and several clones stretch the top into something sharper or fruitier. If you only smell a clone on a paper strip, the first minutes are all you judge, and they are its weakest point.

You will also see Cloud by Ariana Grande named as an alternative. It is left out here on purpose: Fragrantica's own article calls the comparison a misnomer that hinges on a single note, and its listed notes, pear, coconut cream and praline over musk, share no saffron, cedar or ambergris with the original.

Baccarat Rouge 540 clones vs the original: the price per ml

The house's full bottle costs several times more per ml than any clone listed here. Wearing the real thing first costs least with a 3ml decant of the original.

Clone bottle or a 10ml decant of the original?

Per ml, every clone we could price costs far less than the original. Red Temptation shows no price in the table because it has no EU list price. A 10ml decant of Baccarat Rouge 540 is 40,32 €, or 4,03 €/ml, and a 30ml is 104,72 € (3,49 €/ml). If you already know you love the effect and want to spray it freely every day, a clone bottle gives you more millilitres for the money.

Per decision, the maths changes. A 3ml of the original, around 60 sprays, is 16,11 €, which is less than most of the clone bottles in the table. Authentic perfumes in the same family

Club de Nuit Untold by Armaf is a similar original that 10ML stocks. Parfumo lists saffron and jasmine, then amberwood and ambergris, then cedar and fir: the frame of the original, with the sugar and oakmoss left off the list. On published notes it is the most complete match of any perfume in this guide, and its Fragrantica listing gives the same six notes.

If you want the saffron-amber effect from another house, four more originals share part of it. Crystal Saffron by Matiere Premiere is the most direct: saffron over Ambroxan, incense and musk, drier and less sugary. Instant Crush by Mancera pairs saffron and amberwood with rose, jasmine, vanilla and oakmoss, a warmer and more floral take. Molecule 02 by Escentric Molecules is Ambroxan on its own, the mineral base note in isolation. Burberry Her shares jasmine, amber and oakmoss under a top of strawberry, raspberry and blackberry, a fruitier daytime scent. Each comes as a decant, so you can wear two or three in the same week before choosing.

How to test a dupe

Paper strips flatter a clone, so compare the two on skin. Spray the original on one wrist or one day, and the clone on another, and judge them on skin at the same points: the first ten minutes, then the heart, then the dry-down after 4 to 8 hours. Wear each one for a full day, on different days, so one does not colour your nose for the other.
