What does Virgin Island Water smell like?

Virgin Island Water by Creed is a unisex scent from 2007, and it reads like a rum cocktail on paper. The top puts coconut and lime together with white bergamot and Sicilian mandarin, so the first spray is bright citrus over a creamy edge. The heart turns spicy and floral: ginger, ylang-ylang, Indian jasmine and hibiscus. The base is white rum, sugar cane and musk, which keeps the finish soft and faintly sweet rather than heavy.

The accords read citrus, sweet, coconut, fresh spicy, vanilla, lactonic, rum and woody. Two things are worth tracking in any alternative: the lime against the coconut at the start, and whether the sugar-cane-and-rum base is there at all. The sources below return to both.

There is no flanker of it in the 10ML catalogue, but Fragrantica lists a newer edition without rum or sugar cane, and the sources do not say which edition they compared.

Malibù – Party in the Bay by Simone Andreoli has drawn more Parfumo votes than any other pick here, and the verdict is clear: on its comparison page, the share who judge it similar to Virgin Island Water is close to nine tenths. It also comes up in two Fragrantica forum threads.

The main difference, by its supporters' account, is that it holds on better. A member in the first thread recommends it as very close to the Creed with better staying power, and is careful to add that it is not a low-cost clone. Members of a second thread name it when someone asks for an alternative that lasts longer than the original.

It suits someone who already likes the Creed's style and wants a niche bottle that, by these members' accounts, stays with them longer. It carries the highest bottle price in the table. Basis: Parfumo's vote and members in two Fragrantica threads.

Gorse by Laboratory Perfumes rests first on one owner's account. A Fragrantica forum member who owned both says the two are very close. On Parfumo's Gorse comparison, the similar votes come to nearly three quarters.

The main difference is the opening. Writing on Fragrantica, a member who owns and wears both Gorse and the Creed finds the dry-down very similar, but misses the vivid lime that starts the Creed. Others there find the coconut more pronounced, and one buyer finds it floral and not similar.

It suits someone who loves the way Virgin Island Water settles and minds the first spray less. Its price cell stays empty: we found no EU listing with stock on the check date. Basis: one forum owner, members on Fragrantica including one dissent, and Parfumo's vote.

Aquatica by Rayhaan has the most lopsided vote of the six. On Parfumo's page for the pair, almost every voting member finds it similar to the Creed.

The main difference is the balance of lime and coconut. On Fragrantica, members call it a lime-first scent, with less coconut than they hoped for, and several say it misses the refinement of the original.

Hawaii Volcano by Alexandria Fragrances is a split case. On Parfumo's comparison page, a little over two thirds of the votes say similar. Alexandria markets it as inspired by Virgin Island Water, which is the house's own claim and not evidence.

The main difference comes from a member on its Fragrantica page who wore both: the opening starts out similar, then Hawaii Volcano turns more floral and lime-forward, darker and sweeter, without the sugary note of the Creed. Another member there finds it not that close.

It suits someone who wants a darker, sweeter, more floral take and does not need the sugar-cane finish. Its price cell is blank, as no EU listing was found. Basis: Parfumo's vote and two Fragrantica members who disagree.

The premium label on Caribbean Waters, from The Dua Brand, comes from its format. Dua says it is inspired by Virgin Island Water and lists it as an extrait de parfum; both points come from the house. Outside the house, about three in four voting members on Parfumo's Caribbean Waters comparison find it similar.

The main difference, going by the note list Dua publishes, is fruit and flowers: lime, bergamot and tropical fruits, then coconut milk, jasmine and white flowers, on tonka, white musk and patchouli. There is no rum, ginger or sugar cane in that list.

Choose it if you want coconut and lime at extrait strength and are comfortable trusting the list and the vote. No EU list price was found. Basis: Parfumo's vote, with the notes from the house.

Where the six leave the Creed

Two themes recur across the sources. The first is the lime: Gorse's opening misses it for one member, while Aquatica is called lime-led by members, with less coconut than they hoped. The second is the sugared rum base, which no source says any pick keeps. Hawaii Volcano goes without the sugary note, and Caribbean Waters lists no rum at all.

Staying power is the other thread. Malibù's supporters choose it because it lasts longer for them. Endless Summer, Hawaii Volcano and Caribbean Waters rest partly or wholly on votes and house claims, so they are the picks to approach with the most care. The Creed price, and what a 3ml settles

At Creed prices, starting small makes sense. A 3ml of Virgin Island Water, around 60 sprays, is 12,24 €, enough to find out whether the lime-coconut-rum idea is one you want to keep. Around 200 sprays fill the 10ml decant, priced at 33,21 € (3,32 €/ml), and around 600 fill the 30ml at 81,00 €, which drops the rate to 2,70 €/ml.

Authentic perfumes that share the coconut

Three originals from other houses pair coconut with citrus, rum or musk. Beach Walk by Maison Margiela shares coconut, bergamot, ylang-ylang and musk, with lemon, pink pepper, heliotrope, benzoin and cedar around them. Piña Paraíso by Kilian, by Mathieu Nardin, keeps the rum and coconut but adds pineapple and frangipani over tonka bean and vanilla, a sweeter cocktail. Aqua Allegoria Florabloom by Guerlain shares lime, bergamot, coconut and musk, then turns floral with mango, iris, tuberose, violet and rose. All three are decanted to order, so any of them can sit next to the Creed in the same week.

How to test a dupe

With Virgin Island Water, the lime is the first test and the sugar cane is the last. Spray the Creed on one day and the alternative on another, and check whether the lime and coconut arrive together, whether ginger and flowers show in the heart, and whether a soft rum sweetness is still there once it has settled.
