How to choose a perfume for your wedding

Start with the day, not the bottle. A morning ceremony in a garden and a candlelit reception in December ask for different scents. Bright, clean perfumes built on citrus, white flowers and soft musk sit naturally in daylight and warm weather. Sweeter scents with vanilla, amber and resin feel right when it is cold and the lights are low. If your wedding runs from lunch to midnight, you can pick one perfume that bridges both, or keep a second, richer one for the evening.

Then think about distance. A wedding is a long day spent at arm's length from people: embraces at the door, slow dances, photographs cheek to cheek with a grandparent. A perfume that fills a room can feel like too much after hours of that. Sillage is the word for how far a scent carries around you, and community votes on it are a useful guide. Think, too, about the years after. Your wedding scent tends to become the smell of the day itself, so choose something you will be glad to wear again on an anniversary, not a scent you only tolerate for one afternoon. Valaya by Parfums de Marly

Blue Talisman by Ex Nihilo

Blue Talisman is juicy pear, bergamot, mandarin orange and a spark of ginger at the top, orange blossom and Georgywood in the heart, and akigalawood, musk and ambrofix underneath. Fruity and fresh, with a smooth woody finish. It launched in 2023 and is unisex, so it works as a shared scent for a couple. Voters in the community reach for it on spring and summer days. Most of them rate its longevity moderate, so a small bottle in your bag for a top-up makes sense.

A suit, a warm room and a long day call for something polished that stays close. These three are fresh at the start and end on woods and moss.

Reflection Man by Amouage

Reflection Man is a floral scent for men, and that makes it a good partner for a bride in white flowers. Rosemary, pink pepper and petitgrain open it; jasmine, neroli, orris root and ylang-ylang form the heart; sandalwood, cedar, vetiver and patchouli settle underneath. Clean, powdery and quietly elegant. It launched in 2006. Most voters in the community rate its longevity long lasting. Spring, the office and daytime are where they place it.

Torino21 by Xerjoff

Torino21 is a garden in a bottle: mint, lemon, basil and thyme first, then black currant, rosemary, lavender and jasmine, drying down to musk and vervain. Hacivat by Nishane

Hacivat opens with pineapple, grapefruit and bergamot, moves to cedar, patchouli and jasmine, and ends on oakmoss and woody notes. Fruity at first, then dry and mossy. Nishane released it in 2017. Sweet and warm, for an autumn or winter wedding

La Vie Est Belle by Lancôme

La Vie Est Belle starts on black currant and pear. Iris leads the heart, with jasmine and orange blossom beside it, and the base is a sweet mix of praline, vanilla, tonka bean and patchouli. Sugared, powdery and warm. It launched in 2012. Community voters place it in winter and autumn, and at night, in the evening and by day, which makes it the one scent here that could carry you from the vows to the last dance. Hypnotic Poison by Dior

Hypnotic Poison opens with coconut, plum and apricot. Its heart is rose, Brazilian rosewood, jasmine, caraway, tuberose and lily-of-the-valley, and the base is vanilla, almond, sandalwood and musk. Creamy, nutty and a little mysterious. It launched in 1998. For voters in the community it is a winter scent for evenings and nights. Their sillage votes lean strong.

Black Opium by Yves Saint Laurent

Black Opium is pear, pink pepper and orange blossom at the start, coffee, jasmine, bitter almond and licorice in the heart, and vanilla, patchouli, cashmere wood and cedar at the end. Sweet and dark, with a bitter coffee edge that suits an evening reception. The house released it in 2014. Its sillage is moderate for most community voters, who save it for winter nights and evenings.

Rich and bold, for the evening party

If the celebration runs late, you might keep a second scent for when the music starts. These are the most powerful perfumes in this guide, so they want a single spray, not three.

Angel by Mugler

Angel is cotton candy, bergamot, pineapple, coconut and melon over a heart of honey, red berries, plum and peach, with patchouli, chocolate, caramel and vanilla in the base. Loud, sweet and unmistakable. It launched in 1992. In the community, sillage votes lean enormous, then strong. Winter and autumn nights are when voters choose it.

Black Orchid by Tom Ford

Black Orchid opens with truffle, gardenia, black currant, ylang-ylang and bergamot. Orchid, spices and lotus follow, and the base is Mexican chocolate, patchouli, incense, amber, sandalwood and white musk. Dark, earthy and velvety. It launched in 2006 and is unisex, so either of you could claim it. Its sillage votes in the community lean strong. Voters wear it on winter evenings and nights.

Baccarat Rouge 540 by Maison Francis Kurkdjian

Baccarat Rouge 540 is saffron and jasmine over amberwood, ambergris and hedione, with cedar, sugar, ambroxan and oakmoss in the base. Airy and glowing, sweet and mineral at once. Wear your shortlist before the wedding

A wedding perfume is the one purchase where a blind buy stings the most. You only learn how a scent behaves by living in it: how it opens, how it sits in the afternoon, what is left at midnight. So give yourself a few trial days before the wedding, one scent at a time.

1. Choose up to three candidates. Pick from one or two of the groups above, the ones that match your season and hour. A 3ml gives you around 60 sprays of each, which covers several trial days.
2. Wear each one for a full day. A long lunch, a walk and an evening out is close to a wedding day. Notice the opening, the afternoon and the end of the night, not just the first minute.
3. Ask the person who will stand closest. Your partner will spend the whole day beside you, so their nose counts.
4. Wear the winner to a fitting. Trying it with the dress or the suit tells you whether the scent and the outfit feel like the same person.

On the day
