How to choose perfume for an older woman

Taste does not follow a birthday. Some women have worn one signature scent for years and still love it. Others feel ready for a change, or have never found a perfume that felt like theirs. So start with the person, not the age: what she wears now, where she will wear the new one, and how much she wants it to be noticed.

Three questions do most of the work:

• What does she already reach for? If she loves fresh, clean scents, begin with the soft and musky styles below. If she likes something rich and enveloping, go straight to the warm and sweet ones.
• Day or evening? A scent for the office and a scent for dinner are rarely the same bottle. The groups below follow that line.

Reading a perfume you cannot smell

Buying online means choosing from words, so it helps to know what the words mean. A perfume is usually described in three layers. The top notes are what you smell in the first minutes, bright and quick to fade. The heart notes arrive next and give the scent its character. The base notes are the dry-down, the part that stays on skin and clothes for the rest of the day.

Two notes come up again and again in this guide. Iris is soft, powdery and slightly rooty, the note that makes a perfume feel like face powder or cool suede. Rose can be fresh and dewy or deep and jammy, depending on what surrounds it. If you know she likes one of them, you already have a starting point.

The other clue is the accord, a short label for the overall impression: powdery, musky, floral, woody, sweet. When a perfume's notes and accords both point the same way, the description is usually a fair guide. When you are still unsure, that is the moment to wear it for a few days rather than guess.

1. Start with 3ml. It holds around 60 sprays, which covers roughly a week of daily wearing. Choose two or three from different groups to learn what she, or you, really likes.
