Why two perfumes share one name

Amouage released Guidance first, then followed it a year later with Guidance 46. The name tells you they belong together, but it does not tell you how far apart they sit. Reading the two note lists together is the fastest way to see it.

The short version is that most of the structure is shared. The heart is identical, note for note. The base keeps sandalwood, vanilla, akigalawood, ambergris and labdanum in both. What changes is the frame around that shared middle: Guidance 46 puts more at the top and more at the bottom, and it leans further towards rose and dry wood.

That matters when you are choosing without a tester. If you already know you like the shared core, the question is only whether you want the extra bitterness and dryness of the later perfume, or the softer, sweeter shape of the first one.

What Guidance smells like

Guidance starts with juicy pear and hazelnut, with olibanum giving the opening a faint smoky lift. The pear keeps it from feeling heavy in the first minutes. As it settles, the heart arrives: soft, fruity osmanthus next to rose, a thread of saffron and the rich, heady jasmine sambac.

The dry-down is where Guidance shows its warmth. Sandalwood and vanilla make it creamy, labdanum adds a resinous depth, and akigalawood and ambergris keep the finish long and smooth. The accords listed for it run woody, fruity, sweet, nutty, powdery and balsamic, which is a good summary: a warm, rounded perfume where the fruit and the nut stay audible until late.

It is listed as a perfume for women. On longevity, the clear majority of community voters chose "eternal". For sillage, the community vote leans "strong", with "enormous" behind it. Fall and winter are the seasons voters choose, and night and evening the times. Going out is the occasion it is associated with.

What Guidance 46 smells like

Guidance 46 opens busier. Pear and hazelnut are still there, but rose water and bitter almond sit right beside them, and pink pepper adds a small, dry spark. Frankincense runs underneath, so the first impression is fruit and nut with a clearer floral and bitter edge than the first Guidance.

The heart is the same quartet: osmanthus, rose, saffron and jasmine sambac. Because rose water already appeared at the top, the rose reads more strongly here, and the accords for this one list rose as its own family.

The base is the bigger change. Sandalwood, akigalawood, vanilla, ambergris and labdanum carry over, and three more woody materials join them: georgywood, cypriol and the soft, seed-like ambrette. Cypriol brings an earthy, smoky dryness, georgywood a clean woody glow. The result is a finish that feels drier and more textured than the creamy close of Guidance.

It is also listed as a perfume for women, and its votes mirror the original. Here too, most community voters rate longevity "eternal". Sillage votes lean "strong", ahead of "enormous". The community picks it for fall and winter, for evening and then night. Like the first Guidance, it is associated with going out.

Where Guidance and Guidance 46 differ

Put side by side, the two note lists differ in a handful of places. These are the ones you would notice on skin.

• The opening. Guidance is pear, hazelnut and olibanum. Guidance 46 keeps pear and hazelnut, lists frankincense, and adds rose water, bitter almond and pink pepper.
• The rose. Both carry rose in the heart. Guidance 46 adds rose water at the top, so rose is present earlier and for longer.
• The bitterness. Bitter almond appears only in Guidance 46. It pulls the hazelnut sweetness towards something sharper and less sugary.
• The base. Both share sandalwood, vanilla, akigalawood, ambergris and labdanum. Guidance 46 adds ambrette, georgywood and cypriol, which make its dry-down woodier and less creamy.
• The overall shape. Guidance reads rounder and sweeter, with its fruit and nut up front. Guidance 46 reads more layered, with more rose and more wood.

What they do not differ on, at least in the community votes, is how they wear. Both collect the same top votes for longevity and sillage, and both are picked for the colder months and for the evening.

How they wear, according to community votes

On-skin performance depends on your skin, the weather and how much you spray, so we do not promise it. What we can report is how the fragrance community votes.

For both perfumes, most community voters rate longevity "eternal", with "long lasting" as the runner-up. For sillage, the votes lean "strong", with "enormous" in second place. In practice that points to a light hand: one or two sprays is a sensible place to start with either, then adjust.

The season and time votes line up too. Voters pick both for fall and winter, and for night and evening. Neither is voted towards office or daytime wear, which is worth knowing if you are looking for something to wear to work. For that, a lighter Amouage further down this page is a better fit.

Which one to try first

If you like your perfume sweet, round and nutty, start with Guidance. Its pear and hazelnut lead, the vanilla and sandalwood close it softly, and there is less to get between you and the fruit.

If you prefer rose, or you find very sweet perfumes a little flat, start with Guidance 46. The bitter almond and rose water give it more contrast, and the drier woods in the base keep the sweetness in check.

If you cannot decide, the honest answer is to wear both. Because they share so much, the difference shows up most clearly when you have one on each wrist, or when you swap between them from day to day. A few days with each will tell you more than any description.

A word on the base notes

Both perfumes are built on a warm, woody foundation, and it helps to know what those materials do on their own. Sandalwood is soft, creamy and milky rather than sharp, and it tends to make a fragrance feel smooth and close to the skin as it dries down.

Many warm perfumes also carry an amber character. Amber in perfume is not a single raw material but a warm, resinous, slightly sweet effect, usually built from resins and vanilla. Labdanum is one of the classic building blocks of that effect, which is why perfumes that list it often feel glowing and dense in their final hours.

If neither Guidance is quite right

Sometimes the comparison shows you what you do not want. These three cover the directions a Guidance fan most often drifts towards.

Reflection Man by Amouage

If both Guidance perfumes feel too heavy for daytime, Reflection Man is the lighter Amouage. It opens with rosemary, pink pepper and petitgrain, turns to jasmine, neroli, orris root and ylang-ylang, and settles on sandalwood, cedar, vetiver and patchouli. Clean, powdery and floral rather than sweet. Amouage launched it in 2006 as a perfume for men. Its longevity vote is clear: most community voters chose "long lasting". Spring is its voted season, with office and day as its voted times.

Love Hibiscus by Amouage

Love Hibiscus is a newer Amouage from 2026, listed as unisex. Passionfruit, bergamot and caramel open it, frankincense, hibiscus and orris form the heart, and cypriol, sandalwood and vanilla close it. Fruity and sweet like Guidance, but brighter at the top. Most community voters rate its sillage "strong". Spring and fall are the seasons they choose it for.

Aventus by Creed

For a fruity opening with a smoky, woody finish in a different style altogether, there is Aventus from 2010, listed for men. Bergamot, black currant, apple, lemon and pink pepper lead into a heart of pineapple, Moroccan jasmine and patchouli. The base is birch, oak moss, musk, cedarwood and ambroxan. Community votes on its longevity lean "long lasting", then "eternal". Spring and summer days are when the community reaches for it.

Wear it before you buy the bottle

Guidance and Guidance 46 are close enough that reading about them only gets you so far. The difference is in the bitterness, the rose and the dryness of the base, and that is exactly the kind of detail you only judge on your own skin, over a full day and evening.

That is what our sizes are for. A 3ml decant holds around 60 sprays, enough to get to know a scent over roughly a week. A 10ml decant holds around 200, so you can wear it for weeks and see how it changes with the weather. A 30ml decant holds around 600: that is the size to keep, with the lowest price per ml.
