Which iris for the office and which for the evening

How to choose between powdery and earthy iris

Start with the accords, not the notes. If powdery sits among the first accords, as it does for Insolence Eau de Parfum and Musc Outreblanc, expect the soft side of iris. If woody and earthy appear beside it, as they do for Dior Homme Intense and Prada L'Homme Intense, expect root and wood.

Then think about the season. Community voters most often pick Valentino Donna for fall and winter and Musc Outreblanc for spring and summer, so a warm month and a cool month may call for different bottles. Wear one from each side of that line in 3ml and see which you reach for first.

Try two side by side in 3ml

Test two iris perfumes before you pick one. Wear one on each wrist on the same day, then swap the next day, and notice whether the powder fades first or the wood does. That small test tells you which style you want to own. A 3ml decant gives you around 60 sprays, enough to wear each for several days. Once one earns a place, choose a 10ml decant for around 200 sprays, or a 30ml decant for around 600 sprays on the shelf.
