What makes a fragrance feel right in winter

Cold weather changes what a perfume needs to do. A bright citrus that glows on a summer afternoon can feel thin in December, when your skin is cooler and most of it sits under wool. Winter scents lean on the heavier materials in the base, the ones that unfold slowly and stay close.

How to wear a winter fragrance

A winter fragrance is a big purchase to make from a description, and even the best notes list only tells you the shape of a scent, not how it sits on your skin on a cold morning. The simplest fix is to wear it first.

1. Pick one of each. Choose one scent from the office groups and one from the evening groups. In 3ml, each is around 60 sprays, enough to wear on several different days.
2. Wear it where you would wear it. Try the office scent at work and the evening scent at dinner. A perfume that pleases you at home can feel very different in a warm room full of people.
