What does Soleil Blanc smell like?

Soleil Blanc came out in 2016, and the catalogue lists it for women. Its opening pairs pistachio and bergamot with cardamom and pink pepper, a nutty, lightly spiced start. The heart is a white-flower trio of tuberose, ylang-ylang and jasmine. Under it, coconut meets amber, tonka bean and benzoin.

The accords put white floral first, then coconut, sweet and tuberose. On a clone's list, look for three things: the pistachio and cardamom at the top and the coconut beneath. Not every pick below names all three.

Golden Daze by House of Thêom earns the lead on the strength of its backing. On Parfumo's comparison page for the pair, all but a handful of voting members rate the pair similar, and no other alternative there has drawn as many votes.

Its Fragrantica listing shares the cardamom, bergamot, jasmine, coconut, ylang-ylang, tuberose and tonka of the original. The main difference is what surrounds them. Lemon joins the top, and the base adds solar notes, musk and vanilla, while pistachio, pink pepper and benzoin are missing from the list. The single write-up on that page calls it sunscreen-like but elegant.

Powdery Coconut by Dossier has two independent voices behind it, both small. On Parfumo's comparison page, 9 of 11 voting members call the pair similar. On Fragrantica's page for Soleil Blanc, a member who wore the original calls Powdery Coconut almost an exact dupe and says it is the one they will buy. Neither source singles out the dry-down, so read the label as overall closeness.

The house is open about the link: Dossier says it is inspired by Soleil Blanc, opening on cardamom and pistachio before white flowers led by ylang-ylang. The main difference comes from one verified buyer quoted on that page, who finds it a little softer than the original.

Surfing Puerto Escondido by Zara has independent backing. On Parfumo's comparison page, close to three in four voting members find it similar to Soleil Blanc.

The main difference is the coconut, or the lack of it. Members writing on Fragrantica liken it to Eau de Soleil Blanc without the coconut, and describe it as more floral and airy than creamy. One member who hoped for Eau de Soleil Blanc found it fresher and more transparent even than that.

Soleil White by Scentiments has the highest price per ml of the priced clones in the table, and Scentiments sells it as an extrait de parfum. Its backing is independent: on Parfumo's comparison page, roughly four out of every five people voting judge it similar to Soleil Blanc.

The same page gives its notes: bergamot on top, tuberose, ylang-ylang and jasmine in the heart, then coco de mer, tonka bean and benzoin. The main difference on paper is the opening. Bergamot stands alone there, with no pistachio, cardamom or pink pepper, and the base lists coco de mer where the original lists coconut, with no amber.

Ibiza by FIORE comes with the house's own framing: FIORE markets it as its fragrance twin of Soleil Blanc. That is a seller's description, not a finding from anyone else.

Its list is built on tiare flower, coconut and pistachio, over bergamot, cardamom, ylang-ylang, jasmine, tonka and amber. The main difference is the white flower at the centre: tiare takes the place of tuberose, which the list leaves out, along with the benzoin and pink pepper. FIORE marks it four out of five on its own sweetness scale, which is where the "sweeter" label comes from.

It suits someone who wants coconut and pistachio at the centre of the list and would trade the tuberose for tiare flower. Basis: a named source, FIORE's product page.

Solar Blanc by Milestone Perfumes matches the original on paper. Its Fragrantica listing gives pistachio, cardamom, bergamot and pink pepper, then tuberose, ylang-ylang and jasmine, then coconut, tonka bean, benzoin and amber: all eleven of Soleil Blanc's listed notes. The same page puts Soleil Blanc first among the perfumes its fans also like.

The main difference members describe is volume. One, who counts it among their favourite Tom Ford dupes, finds a slightly sweet, soft coconut with almost no sillage. Another, who has not smelled the original, calls it not too loud, a very toned-down perfume, and a third wishes it projected more. Opinion is not unanimous: a fourth member finds it artificial.

Five of the six picks have evidence from outside the clone house. Golden Daze, Powdery Coconut, Surfing Puerto Escondido and Soleil White each have a Parfumo comparison vote, and Solar Blanc has members' write-ups on Fragrantica. Golden Daze has the broadest vote and Powdery Coconut the smallest.

Clone bottle or a 3ml of the original?

Measured per ml, a decant of the original costs far more than any priced clone in the table. Soleil Blanc costs 7,67 €/ml in the 10ml size (76,68 €) and drops to 7,02 €/ml in the 30ml (210,69 €). Someone who wears coconut florals daily, and already knows the style suits them, gets far more to spray from a clone bottle.

If you only reach for Soleil Blanc now and then, the sum looks different. A 3ml, around 60 sprays, is 25,29 €, and it shows you what the clones are chasing before you choose one. The lighter Eau de Soleil Blanc is 14,58 € for 3ml, and the Parfum is 18,00 €, so you can put all three versions on skin in the same fortnight. Authentic perfumes with the same coconut and flowers

Among originals, three from other houses overlap heavily with the Soleil Blanc note list. Tamarindo by Memo Paris shares the most notes of the three: bergamot and cardamom on top, coconut, tuberose, jasmine and ylang-ylang in the heart, and benzoin in the base, with pineapple, peach and patchouli for a fruitier turn. Lady Million Fabulous by Rabanne shares pink pepper, tuberose, jasmine, ylang-ylang and tonka bean, adds solar notes and moss, and has no coconut on its list. Coco Vanille by Mancera keeps coconut, ylang-ylang and jasmine, then turns to white peach, tiare flower and vanilla. How to test a dupe

A Soleil Blanc alternative can open well and drift later, so judge it on skin, never on a card. Put the original on one wrist and the clone on the other only if you want a first look; for a real verdict, give each its own day. Check the pistachio and cardamom in the opening, the white flowers once it has settled, and the coconut and amber in the evening.
