What does Vanilla Sex smell like?

Vanilla Sex by Tom Ford is a Private Blend scent that launched in 2023. It opens on bitter almond, a sharp and nutty edge, then settles into a heart of vanilla with unnamed floral notes. The base comes back to vanilla twice more, once as Ultravanil, with tonka bean and sandalwood underneath. Its accords read vanilla, almond, sweet and nutty first, with fruity, powdery, floral, woody and amber facets behind them. So this is vanilla built in layers, with the bitter almond and the sandalwood keeping it from going flat. Tom Ford's own page sets out the composition.

That layering is the hard part for a clone. Almond and vanilla are easy to list; the balance between bitterness, sugar and wood is not.

Sensual Vanilla by Maison Alhambra lists almost the whole pyramid of the original. Its Fragrantica listing gives bitter almond on top, vanilla and floral notes in the heart, then vanilla absolute, tonka bean and sandalwood in the base. Only Ultravanil is missing from that list.

The main difference is the start. Members there who own Vanilla Sex describe Sensual Vanilla as very close, with a slightly different opening. A Parfumo member who likes the original calls it an affordable alternative quite close to Vanilla Sex, and closer than Sehr by Lattafa. They describe a challenging first few minutes before vanilla, bitter almond, sandalwood and tonka take over. Not everyone agrees: one Fragrantica member finds it warmer and spicier, and no match.

It suits someone who loves the almond-vanilla dry-down, wants a large bottle, and can sit through a rough opening. Basis: named sources. Gourmand Vanilla by Dossier shares the almond, vanilla, tonka bean and sandalwood of the original. Dossier's own page points to Tom Ford's Vanilla Sex as its reference and names almond, vanilla and sandalwood as its main notes.

The main difference is what sits between the almond and the base. Its Fragrantica listing adds ginger to the almond on top, puts ylang-ylang, jasmine, coconut and orange in the heart, and adds caramel to the base. One member there finds it smells very close to Vanilla Sex. Another calls Dossier's version a little sweeter and well blended. Several members dislike a sharp opening.

Sehr by Lattafa shares bitter almond, vanilla absolute and tonka bean with the original. Its Fragrantica listing sets those among spicier and woodier company: cinnamon beside the almond, akigalawood, pomarose and jasmine in the heart, and amber in the base.

The main difference is the frame. Going by the list, cinnamon, akigalawood and amber stand where the original has its floral notes and sandalwood, which is why Sehr sits in the darker slot here. Opinion is split. One Fragrantica member finds it not far off Vanilla Sex; another finds nothing of Vanilla Sex in it. A Vanilla Sex owner on a Fragrantica forum thread about almond vanillas suggests Sehr for the budget-minded and finds it less powerful than the original. The Parfumo member quoted in the section above finds Sensual Vanilla the closer of the two.

Vanilla Aura by Primark comes with one detailed account rather than a published note list in our sources. A Parfumo member who compared it with Vanilla Sex at a Tom Ford counter found the opening just as harsh as the original's. After that came a powdery, slightly salty vanilla dry-down with little sweetness.

The main difference, for that member, is wear: Vanilla Aura did not last as long on them as the original. That is one person on one skin, so treat it as a single report.

Dua's own page names Vanilla Sex as its reference and lists bitter almond, vanilla, floral notes, vanilla absolute, Ultravanil, tonka bean and sandalwood: every note in the original's list. Its Fragrantica listing gives a shorter set: bitter almond, vanilla, floral notes, tonka bean and sandalwood.

The main difference is the format. Dua sells it as an extrait de parfum, and that concentration is what puts it in the premium slot here. Our sources carry no owner's account of how it wears against the original, so the match stands on paper.

Las Vegas by FIORE shares one listed note with the original: vanilla. FIORE's page presents it as its alternative to Vanilla Sex and lists caramel, then vanilla, then leather.

The main difference, going by the lists, is at both ends. Caramel stands where the original lists bitter almond, and leather stands where the original lists tonka bean and sandalwood. Caramel in the lead is why it takes the sweeter slot. Nothing in our sources describes how it wears, so this comparison is lists only.

It suits someone who, on paper, prefers caramel to almond. Basis: published notes only; read this as a possible resemblance, not a shown one.

What every clone gets wrong

The opening is the weak point. Members writing about three of the clones here mention a start that is challenging, sharp or harsh before the vanilla settles. One of those members found the original's opening harsh too, so part of this may be the style rather than the clone.

The second gap is the layered vanilla. The original lists vanilla three ways, as a heart note, as an absolute and as Ultravanil. Only one clone house, Dua, names Ultravanil on its list. The others either stop at vanilla and vanilla absolute or swap part of the stack for caramel, amber or extra flowers, which changes the balance between bitter and sweet.

The last gap is evidence. One clone here rests on a single member's account, and one on its note list alone. That is honest, but it is thin. Your own skin settles the question faster than any listing.

Clone bottle or the original in a small size?

Measured in euros per millilitre, the priced clones sit far below the original. Gourmand Vanilla, Vanilla Aura and Intimate With Vanilla have no price in the table: none of them had a euro list price we could find when prices were checked. For the original, you pay 63,45 € for a 10ml decant (6,35 €/ml), or 159,03 € for a 30ml (5,30 €/ml). So if the almond-vanilla style is already your favourite and you plan to spray it daily without thinking, a clone buys more volume.

The sum looks different if you have not decided yet. A 3ml decant of Vanilla Sex, around 60 sprays, costs 22,23 €. A week on your own skin tells you whether to go for the original, one of the clones, or something else. Authentic perfumes in the same family

Four originals from other houses carry part of the almond-vanilla idea. Italica by Xerjoff, from 2016, opens on milk, saffron and almond, moves to vanilla and toffee, and rests on sandalwood, musk and cedar: a milkier take. Hypnotic Poison by Dior, from 1998, starts on coconut, plum and apricot, passes through rose, jasmine and tuberose, and dries down to vanilla, almond, sandalwood and musk. Rolling in Love by By Kilian, from 2019, pairs almond milk and ambrette with iris and heliotrope, over tuberose, vanilla, tonka bean and caramel. Fantasmagory by Louis Vuitton, from 2025, is the shortest list: ginger, then almond and floral notes, then vanilla and leather.

How to test a dupe

Paper strips are kind to clones, so do the comparison on skin. Give Vanilla Sex and the clone a day each rather than spraying both together, which keeps your impression of one from blurring into the other. Check each one at the same three points: a few minutes after spraying, when the heart arrives, and at the dry-down, late in the day.

For that week, a 3ml of Vanilla Sex is enough. If the original wins, a 10ml decant, around 200 sprays, gives weeks of wear, and a 30ml, around 600 sprays, is the size to keep.
