What is ambergris

Sperm whales eat a great deal of squid, and the hard, beak-like parts of the squid are difficult to digest. A fatty, waxy mass builds up around them in the whale's intestine and is eventually expelled into the sea. Fresh, it is dark, soft and smells frankly unpleasant. Floating in salt water, often for years, it slowly hardens and pales from near black to grey, and at last to a weathered cream. As it changes colour, its smell changes too. The pale, sea-worn pieces that wash up on beaches are the ones perfumers want.

Nobody can farm it, and finds are rare and unpredictable, so natural ambergris is scarce and expensive. Perfumers use it as a tincture, dissolved in alcohol and left to mature, and for centuries it was valued as much for the way it rounded a composition and held it together as for its own scent. Very few perfumes today contain the natural material. When a notes list says "ambergris", it usually describes an effect in the base rather than promising something a whale produced.

What does ambergris smell like

Aged ambergris is hard to describe in one word, because it is several smells at once. It is sweet and earthy, with a salty breath of the sea, a soft musk close to warm skin, and hints of tobacco, damp wood and old paper. It is not loud. On a blotter it reads as a glow rather than a note you could point at.

In a perfume, that glow is its job. Ambergris sits in the base and gives whatever is above it depth and a slightly sensual roundness, the way a pinch of salt makes a sweet dish taste more of itself. Perfumes that list it tend to feel warm, smooth and a little animal in the dry-down, the part you notice once the bright opening has faded.

What is ambroxan

When chemists studied ambergris, they found that much of its character comes from a few compounds that form as it ages at sea. Ambroxan is a laboratory-made version of the most important one. It is usually made from sclareol, a material taken from clary sage, so no whale is involved at any stage. You will also see it written as ambrox; the two names refer to essentially the same molecule.

Where ambergris is rare and varies from piece to piece, ambroxan is consistent, stable and affordable. That is why it has become one of the most widely used base materials in modern perfumery, especially in fresh and woody fragrances.

What does ambroxan smell like

Ambroxan smells dry, woody and warm, with a mineral, faintly salty edge, a little like sun-warmed skin or a smooth stone. It is less sweet and less animal than aged ambergris, and much cleaner. Rather than a clear note, it works like a halo: it makes the skin around a perfume seem to glow.

Many people notice it in waves, present for a while, then gone, then back again. Some people can barely smell it at all, which is common with large, musky molecules, so a perfume built on it can seem quiet to the wearer and fuller to the people nearby. In a fresh perfume it gives a bright opening a dry, radiant finish; in a sweet or floral one it makes the whole thing feel lighter and more open.

Ambergris or ambroxan: reading a notes list

When you are choosing without smelling, the notes list is the best clue you have. Here is how to read these two:

• Ambergris in the base usually signals warmth and roundness: sweeter, softer and a little animal. Read more on our ambergris note page.
• Ambroxan usually signals a dry, mineral, radiant finish, and it turns up most often in fresh, bright perfumes. Our ambroxan note page lists every perfume we carry with it.
• Both together means a perfume that wants the warmth of one and the lift of the other. The two blend so closely that you rarely tell them apart on skin.
• A list names impressions, not formulas. A perfume that lists ambergris may create it partly with ambroxan-type materials, and houses rarely say which. How a base behaves on you is something only wearing it will tell you.

Perfumes with ambergris in the base

Guidance by Amouage

The top of Guidance is pear, hazelnut and olibanum. Below that comes a floral, spiced heart (osmanthus, rose, saffron, jasmine sambac), and the base pairs ambergris with labdanum, vanilla, sandalwood and akigalawood. Ambergris, labdanum and vanilla together give the nutty florals a warm, rounded floor. It launched in 2023. On longevity, most voters in the community say eternal. For sillage, the community vote leans strong, with enormous close behind, so one careful spray is a sensible start. Its season vote goes to autumn and winter, worn in the evening or at night.

Guidance 46 by Amouage

Guidance 46, from 2024, is the denser variation. Its opening adds rose water, bitter almond, frankincense and pink pepper to pear and hazelnut. The heart repeats osmanthus, rose, saffron and jasmine sambac. The base widens to eight materials: ambergris, labdanum, sandalwood, akigalawood, vanilla, ambrette, georgywood and cypriol. All that extra wood makes it drier and deeper, with ambergris warming it from underneath. For longevity, most voters in the community say eternal. The sillage vote tilts towards strong, then enormous. People voting on seasons prefer cold months, and going out after dark.

Libre by Yves Saint Laurent

Libre, launched in 2019, shows how quiet ambergris can be. Lavender, petitgrain, mandarin orange and black currant come first; orange blossom and jasmine follow; cedar, musk, Madagascar vanilla and ambergris close it. Ambergris lends the vanilla and musk a faint animal softness, so the floral finish feels like skin rather than something freshly laundered. Asked about longevity, the community leans long lasting, ahead of moderate. Sillage votes from the community lean moderate. The community's votes place it in autumn and spring, at any hour, and often at work.

Ambroxan in fresh, bright perfumes

Sauvage by Dior

In Sauvage, ambroxan is the headline. A bright, peppery start of pepper and Calabrian bergamot gives way to a busy heart: Sichuan pepper, pink pepper, lavender, geranium, vetiver, patchouli and elemi. Underneath, ambroxan shares the base with cedar and labdanum. Sharp and fresh at first, it dries down to a smooth, mineral warmth. It launched in 2015. When the community votes on longevity, most say long lasting. Sillage votes from the community lean strong. As for season, voters put it in spring and summer, in daylight.

Aventus by Creed

Aventus, from 2010, puts fruit and smoke side by side. Pink pepper, lemon, apple, black currant and bergamot open it. Pineapple, patchouli and Moroccan jasmine fill the middle. Birch, musk, oakmoss, cedarwood and ambroxan form the base, where the birch brings smoke and the ambroxan keeps things clean and bright beneath it. The longevity vote leans long lasting, with eternal next. Sillage voters lean strong. Voted a spring and summer scent, it is worn by day and for going out.

Imagination by Louis Vuitton

Imagination, launched in 2021, is citrus and tea. Citron, Calabrian bergamot and Sicilian orange sparkle at the start; Tunisian neroli, Nigerian ginger and Ceylon cinnamon warm the middle; Chinese black tea, guaiac wood, olibanum and ambroxan settle underneath. Tea and ambroxan give it a clean, airy finish with a touch of spice. Most voters call its longevity long lasting. Most voters also call its sillage moderate. Seasonal votes spread across spring, autumn and winter, for daytime, office hours and evenings.

Versace Pour Homme Dylan Blue by Versace

Versace Pour Homme Dylan Blue, from 2016, puts ambroxan in the middle of an aquatic. Grapefruit, fig leaf, water notes and Calabrian bergamot make a cool start. Violet leaf, black pepper, papyrus, patchouli and ambroxan come next, and incense, saffron, tonka bean and musk close it. Fresh at first, then gently smoky and warm. On longevity, most in the community vote moderate. On sillage, most vote moderate too. It is a summer and spring pick among voters, for daytime and work.

Ambroxan under sweet and floral perfumes

Eros by Versace

Eros, launched in 2012, sets ambroxan in its heart beside tonka bean and geranium. A cool, green start of mint, green apple and lemon leads there, and the base gathers Madagascar vanilla, Virginian cedar, Atlas cedar, vetiver and oakmoss. Ambroxan stops that sweet vanilla from turning heavy. Longevity votes in the community tilt towards long lasting. Sillage votes tilt towards moderate, then strong. Voters most often wear it on cold nights in winter and autumn.

Si by Giorgio Armani

Si, from 2013, starts with cassis, then opens into May rose and freesia. Its base brings patchouli, woody notes, vanilla and ambroxan together. A fruity rose that turns soft and warm, with ambroxan adding a smooth, skin-like glow. Longevity votes lean long lasting. The sillage vote tilts moderate. Seasonal voters favour autumn and winter, for evenings and nights.

Valaya by Parfums de Marly

Valaya, launched in 2023, is the lightest of this group. White peach, aldehydes, mandarin orange and bergamot open it. Its heart is petalia, Nympheal, lily-of-the-valley, orange blossom, mahonia and vetiver. Vanilla, akigalawood, ambroxan and musk sit at the bottom. Musk and ambroxan wrap the white flowers in a clean, powdery halo. The sillage vote leans moderate, then strong. Voters choose it for spring, by day and for work.

Baccarat Rouge 540 by Maison Francis Kurkdjian

Baccarat Rouge 540, from 2015, is the clearest case of the two working together. Saffron and jasmine lead. Ambergris sits in the heart with amberwood and hedione, and ambroxan sits in the base with fir, cedar, sugar and oakmoss. Airy, sugared and faintly mineral, it reads as a glow more than a shape. Voters on longevity lean eternal, then long lasting. Voters on sillage lean strong, then moderate. Seasonal votes cover autumn, winter and spring, mostly after dark.

Baccarat Rouge 540 Extrait by Maison Francis Kurkdjian

Baccarat Rouge 540 Extrait, launched in 2017, keeps the idea but shifts its weight. Bitter almond and saffron come first, with Egyptian jasmine and Virginia cedar behind them. Both materials share the base here, ambergris and ambroxan together with musk, cashmeran and woody notes. Denser and more almond-led. The community's sillage vote leans strong, with enormous second. Winter and autumn nights and evenings are where voters place it.

Wear it before you buy the bottle

Ambergris and ambroxan live in the base, which is the part of a perfume you meet last. A card sniffed in the first minute tells you almost nothing about either, and ambroxan in particular can seem to vanish and return. The only fair test is to wear a perfume for a whole day, on your own skin, more than once.

1. Try a pair. Choose one perfume from the ambergris group and one from the ambroxan group, such as Guidance and Sauvage, or Libre and Valaya. A 3ml decant is around 60 sprays, enough to wear each one on several days.
2. Judge the afternoon, not the opening. Compare the two once the top notes have gone. That is where you will notice whether you prefer the round warmth of ambergris or the dry, mineral glow of ambroxan.
3. Size up once you know. A 10ml decant, around 200 sprays, covers weeks of wear. A 30ml decant, around 600 sprays, is for the one you reach for most, at the lowest price per ml. Imagination and both Baccarat Rouge 540s come in 3ml and 10ml.
