What jasmine smells like in perfume

Jasmine belongs to the white flowers, the family that also holds tuberose, gardenia and orange blossom. A fresh jasmine bloom smells sweet and heady, with a ripe, fruity side and a warm undertone that perfumers call indolic: faintly animal, a little like skin. That undertone is why jasmine reads as sensual rather than simply pretty.

On its own, a big dose of jasmine can feel intense. That is why so few perfumes use it alone. Most put it in the heart, where it rounds out a rose, softens a citrus opening or gives a sweet base something floral to hold on to. You often notice jasmine less as a note and more as a glow that makes everything around it richer.

Sambac, grandiflorum, or just "jasmine"

Two jasmine species do most of the work in perfumery, and they smell different enough to matter when you choose without smelling.

• Jasmine sambac is the greener, fruitier one. It has a bright, almost tea-like edge and a bloom that feels insistent, a flower you notice from across the room.
• Jasmine grandiflorum is the classic jasmine of French perfumery. It is rounder, softer and more honeyed, the jammy, warm jasmine most people picture.
• Plain "jasmine" on a note list does not say which. It can be grandiflorum, sambac, a mix of both or an accord built from several materials.

So when a house writes "jasmine sambac", it is telling you to expect that green, vivid bloom. When it writes only "jasmine", the flower tells you less than its neighbours do. Read the rest of the list: citrus, herbs and green notes keep the jasmine fresh; fruit, praline and vanilla make it sweet; patchouli, amber and chocolate make it dark.

Of the twelve perfumes here, four name sambac on their lists and none names grandiflorum. The other eight simply say jasmine, which is why they are grouped below by their company rather than by the flower.

Sambac in the lead

Alien by Mugler

Alien is the barest jasmine on this list: a sambac top note, a cashmeran heart, an amber base, and nothing more. The sambac arrives vivid and white, then settles into a soft, woody warmth as the cashmeran and amber take over. It launched in 2005 as a women's perfume. Rich, warm sambac

Guidance by Amouage

Guidance wraps its jasmine sambac in something closer to a dessert course. Pear, hazelnut and olibanum open it; osmanthus, rose and saffron share the heart with the sambac; sandalwood, vanilla, akigalawood, ambergris and labdanum form a deep, powdery base. The jasmine never shouts here, but it keeps the nutty sweetness from turning heavy. Most community voters rate its longevity eternal. The season votes place it in the colder months, for evenings out.

Guidance 46 by Amouage

Guidance 46, from 2024, keeps the osmanthus, rose, saffron and jasmine sambac heart of the original but gives it a sharper frame. Rose water, bitter almond, pink pepper and frankincense join the pear and hazelnut at the top, and the base adds ambrette, georgywood and cypriol to the sandalwood and vanilla. Rosier and drier than the original, with more woods underneath. Community votes on its sillage lean strong, then enormous.

XJ 1861 Naxos by Xerjoff

XJ 1861 Naxos shows sambac in a warmer, more masculine setting. Lavender, bergamot and lemon open it brightly, then honey, cinnamon, cashmeran and jasmine sambac turn it golden, and tobacco leaf, vanilla and tonka bean settle underneath. The jasmine adds a floral lift to honeyed tobacco. It launched in 2015 as a men's fragrance, and most community voters rate its sillage strong. Winter and autumn nights are when voters choose it.

Fresh jasmine in the heart

Light Blue by Dolce&Gabbana

Light Blue is jasmine at its most relaxed. Sicilian lemon, apple, cedar and bellflower make a crisp, sunny opening; jasmine, white rose and bamboo form a clean, green heart; musk and amber keep the finish soft. Here jasmine is a breeze, not a bouquet. It launched in 2001 as a women's perfume. Most community voters rate its sillage moderate. Summer is its season in the votes, worn by day or at the office.

Torino21 by Xerjoff

Torino21 hides its jasmine in a herb garden. Mint, lemon, basil and thyme open it, black currant, rosemary, lavender and jasmine follow, and musk with vervain closes it. Green, aromatic and cool, with the jasmine softening the herbs rather than leading. It launched in 2021 as a men's fragrance. Most community voters rate its longevity long lasting. Summer daytime is where the season votes put it, and it suits a working day.

Hacivat by Nishane

Hacivat puts jasmine between fruit and moss. Pineapple, grapefruit and bergamot give a juicy, sharp start; cedar, patchouli and jasmine form the heart; oakmoss and woody notes make an earthy base. The jasmine gives the woods a floral warmth without making it sweet. It launched in 2017 as a men's fragrance. Community votes on its longevity lean eternal, then long lasting. Voters most often choose it for spring and summer days.

Sweet jasmine in a gourmand blend

La Vie Est Belle by Lancôme

In La Vie Est Belle jasmine shares the heart with iris and orange blossom, framed by black currant and pear above and vanilla, praline, patchouli and tonka bean below. The jasmine and orange blossom give the sweetness a white-floral brightness, and the iris makes it powdery. It launched in 2012 as a women's perfume. Autumn and winter are the seasons voters give it, at any hour. Community votes on its sillage lean strong, then moderate.

Hypnotic Poison by Dior

Hypnotic Poison is the almond-soft jasmine. It starts on coconut, plum and apricot, then moves to tuberose, jasmine and rose with Brazilian rosewood, caraway and lily-of-the-valley; vanilla, almond, sandalwood and musk make a milky base. With tuberose beside it, the jasmine feels creamier and more heady. It launched in 1998 as a women's perfume, and voters choose it for winter evenings. Angel by Mugler

Angel uses jasmine as one bright thread among many. Cotton candy, bergamot, pineapple, melon, cassis, coconut, mandarin orange and jasmine form the opening; honey, red berries, plum, peach and orchid fill the heart; patchouli, chocolate, caramel and vanilla ground it. Sweet, fruity and earthy at once, with the jasmine only a flicker at the start. It launched in 1992 as a women's perfume. Community votes on its sillage lean enormous, then strong. Black Orchid by Tom Ford

Black Orchid puts jasmine into a dark, earthy opening of truffle, gardenia, black currant, ylang-ylang, bergamot and lemon. Orchid, spices and lotus follow, and Mexican chocolate, patchouli, incense, sandalwood and vetiver make a smoky, bitter-sweet base. The white flowers glint through the darkness rather than lighting it up. It launched in 2006 and is made for anyone. Winter nights are its season in the community votes. Black Opium by Yves Saint Laurent

Black Opium sets jasmine beside coffee. Pear, pink pepper and orange blossom lift the opening; coffee, jasmine, bitter almond and licorice make a heart that is floral and roasted at once; vanilla, patchouli, cashmere wood and cedar close it. The jasmine keeps the coffee from feeling too heavy. It launched in 2014 as a women's perfume. Most community voters rate its sillage moderate. The season votes favour winter, after dark.

How to wear jasmine

• Start small with the rich ones. Sambac and the sweeter blends can feel heady in a warm room. One spray lets you judge it; add more once you know it.

• Judge the heart, not the opening. Jasmine usually sits in the middle of a perfume, so the first minute tells you little about it. Wait until the top notes fade.

Try jasmine before you buy the bottle

A note list can narrow twelve perfumes to three. It cannot tell you whether sambac feels vivid or overwhelming on you, or whether a sweet jasmine turns cloying by the afternoon. Only wearing it can. So wear it before you commit.

1. Pick one from each style. Alien for sambac, Light Blue for fresh and La Vie Est Belle for sweet make a useful first set because they sit so far apart. A 3ml decant is around 60 sprays, enough for a week or so of each.
2. Wear it for a whole day. Notice when the jasmine arrives, how it sits by the afternoon and how it feels in the evening.
