The best Byredo perfumes by style, and how to wear them before you buy

Why Byredo is hard to choose from a description

Byredo perfumes tend to be quiet. Many of them rest on musk, soft woods and amber rather than on a loud opening, and their note lists read more like a mood board than a recipe: Crisp Amber, Blonde Woods, Chantilly Musk, Jamaican Naseberry. Those names tell you the feeling the perfumer was after. They do not tell you how the scent will sit on you.

A paper strip is the least flattering place to meet this kind of perfume. The citrus flashes past, and what stays behind is a faint, flat trace that could be almost anything. On warm skin the same perfume moves. Flowers come up in the heart, the woods and musk settle close to the body, and the character you are really paying for shows up much later, when the strip has long gone quiet.

So read the notes to narrow the field, and let your skin make the final call. Almost every perfume below is listed as unisex; La Tulipe is the one listed for women. With this house the label matters far less than the style, so the groups below are built on style alone.

Bright citrus and flowers

These two open with a burst of citrus and fruit, then soften into flowers and dry woods. They are the easiest place to start if you like perfume you can wear on a warm day without thinking about it.

Bal d'Afrique by Byredo

Bal d'Afrique opens with a crowd of bright notes: African marigold, bergamot, lemon, neroli and buchu. The heart turns floral with cyclamen, violet and jasmine. Underneath, cedarwood, vetiver, black amber and musk give it a dry, softly woody finish. It feels sunny and slightly green at first, then calm and polished. It launched in 2009. Spring and summer days are when community voters reach for it most. On sillage, most community voters settle on moderate.

Bal d'Afrique Absolu by Byredo

Bal d'Afrique Absolu arrived in 2025 and keeps the bright start while changing the middle. Blackcurrant, bergamot and lemon open it. Praline, musk and violet make up the heart, and black amber, cedarwood and vetiver sit beneath. The praline gives it a rounder, sweeter centre that the original does not have. Most community voters rate its longevity long lasting, where the vote for the original is moderate. Summer daytime is where voters place it.

If you are torn between the two, wear one on each wrist for a day. The difference is in the heart, and the heart only shows once the citrus has gone.

Clean and airy

These are the closest Byredo comes to a fresh white shirt: bright at the top, soft and skin-like underneath.

Blanche by Byredo

Blanche is aldehydes, rose centifolia and pink pepper at the top, peony and violet in the heart, and musk, sandalwood and blonde woods in the base. The aldehydes give it a crisp, freshly laundered brightness, while the base stays soft and close. It launched in 2009. For longevity, most community voters say moderate. Voters tend to save it for spring and summer, at the desk or out by day.

Alto Astral by Byredo

Alto Astral is one of the newest perfumes here, launched in 2025, and it has one of the shortest note lists: aldehydes and coconut water above amber, cashmeran and sandalwood. The coconut is watery and light rather than creamy, so it reads as sunlit skin more than as a dessert. On longevity, the community vote leans long lasting, with moderate next. Summer and spring are its seasons in the voting, from day into night.

Petals and green

Two flower perfumes that avoid sweetness. One keeps its flower fresh with green notes and woods; the other dries its rose with pepper and papyrus.

La Tulipe by Byredo

La Tulipe is an eau de parfum from 2010, and the one perfume in this guide listed for women. Cyclamen, freesia and rhubarb open it with a sharp, watery greenness. Pink tulip is the heart. The base of green notes, vetiver and woody notes keeps the flower crisp and cool rather than sweet. Its sillage vote leans moderate, with intimate close behind. In the voting it belongs to spring and summer, to daytime and the office.

Rose of No Man's Land by Byredo

Rose of No Man's Land, from 2017, uses rose twice. Turkish rose petals and pink pepper come first, then a second, deeper rose in the heart beside raspberry blossom. White amber and papyrus make a pale, dry base. The result is a spiced rose that stays clean from start to finish. Most community voters call its sillage moderate. It is a spring scent in the voting, chosen for daytime and for work.

Soft musk and wood

This pair is where the paper strip fails most. Both are built to sit close and hum, and both need a full day of real wear before you can judge them.

Mojave Ghost by Byredo

Mojave Ghost launched in 2014. It opens with Jamaican naseberry and ambrette, soft and faintly fruity rather than sharp. Magnolia, violet and sandalwood form the heart, and cedarwood, Chantilly musk and crisp amber settle underneath. The whole thing feels powdery, warm and hushed, more like a well-worn jumper than a statement. Longevity, by most community votes, is moderate. Voters see it as a spring perfume for daytime and office hours.

Mojave Ghost Absolu by Byredo

Mojave Ghost Absolu is an absolu de parfum from 2024. It adds pear to the opening and vetiver to the base, around the same ambrette, naseberry, magnolia, sandalwood, violet, cedarwood, Chantilly musk and crisp amber. By most community votes, its longevity is long lasting. The sillage vote leans strong, and moderate comes second. Where voters keep the original for spring days, they pick the Absolu for autumn, winter and spring, and for the evening as well as the day.

Woody and aromatic

Herbs, resin and wood. These two feel like the outdoors, one in a pine forest and one around a smouldering stick of wood.

Gypsy Water by Byredo

Gypsy Water launched in 2008, which makes it the oldest perfume in this guide. Bergamot, lemon, pepper and juniper berries open it. Incense, pine needles and orris form the heart, and amber, vanilla and sandalwood soften the base. It is resinous and outdoorsy, with a gentle sweetness only at the very end. Its longevity vote leans moderate, then weak. Spring and autumn are its seasons with voters, worn by day and at the office.

De Los Santos by Byredo

De Los Santos, from 2024, opens with clary sage and mirabelle, herbal and fruity at once. Orris and cistus sit in the heart. Musk, ambroxan and palo santo make a dry, smoky wood base that wears closer than its opening suggests. Most community voters judge its longevity long lasting. Autumn and winter lead its season vote, by day and into the evening.

Warm and dark, for autumn

The two richest perfumes here, for cold weather and later hours.

Bibliothèque by Byredo

Bibliothèque launched in 2017. It begins with peach, plum and cinnamon, softens into violet and peony, and ends on leather, patchouli, vanilla, birch woods and musk. Ripe fruit meets worn leather, like a warm room full of old books. For sillage, most community voters answer moderate. It is an autumn and winter evening perfume in the voting.

Animalique by Byredo

Animalique, from 2023, has only a handful of listed notes: bergamot and lemon over suede, amber and tobacco leaf. There is no listed heart, so the citrus runs straight into soft, warm suede with a dry edge of tobacco. Its sillage vote leans strong, ahead of moderate. Cold months suit it best for voters, autumn and winter, at any hour from day to night.

A first three from Byredo

Wear it before you buy the bottle
