The short answer: perfume ages, it does not go off overnight

A fragrance is a blend of aromatic materials dissolved in alcohol. Alcohol is a good preservative, so nothing grows in a perfume bottle the way it would in a cream or a lotion. What happens instead is slower and chemical. Some of the aromatic materials react with oxygen, some break down in light, and warmth speeds up both.

The result is gradual. A perfume that has aged a little may simply open less brightly. One that has aged a lot can smell sharp, sour or flat, with a dry-down that no longer matches the one you remember. It will rarely harm you, but it will no longer be the scent you chose.

Why some perfumes change faster than others

Not every part of a perfume ages at the same speed. The first thing you smell after spraying, the top notes, is usually made of the lightest and most fragile materials. Citrus oils such as bergamot and lemon are the classic example: bright and sparkling when fresh, and among the first to dull or turn sharp as they oxidise.

The heart and base are generally sturdier. Woods, resins, musks, amber and vanilla are heavier materials that hold their character for much longer. Some rich, dark fragrances even seem to deepen a little over time, while a fresh citrus cologne kept in the same place loses its sparkle sooner.

A few things follow from this:

• Fresh, citrus-led scents show age first, and they show it in the opening.
• Warm, woody and ambery scents tend to keep their shape for longer.
• Lighter concentrations such as eau de toilette and eau de cologne often lean on fresh top notes, so their first minutes are usually where you notice a change.
• Colour alone is not a verdict. Natural materials can darken a perfume slightly over time without spoiling the smell.

How long does perfume last after opening?

An unopened bottle, sealed and kept in its box away from heat and light, changes very slowly. The clock really starts when you open it, because every spray lets a little air in to replace the liquid that leaves.

In a full bottle, that air pocket grows as the level drops. A bottle that is half empty holds far more oxygen above the liquid than one you opened last week. That is why the last third of a large bottle is often where people notice the opening has gone quiet or sharp.

Signs a perfume has turned

You do not need a date on the box to know. Your nose is the test. Spray once on a clean wrist and give it a minute before you judge.

• A sharp or sour opening. A vinegar-like or harsh first spray is the most common sign that the top notes have oxidised.
• A flat, muted start. The scent is recognisable but the brightness has gone, as if someone turned the volume down on the first minutes.
• A dry-down that feels wrong. Once the opening fades, the heart and base should settle into the character you know. If they smell stale or thin, the whole blend has moved.
• A clear change in colour or texture. A noticeably darker shade together with a changed smell is a stronger signal than colour on its own. Cloudiness or residue is a firm reason to stop wearing it.

If the opening is off but the dry-down is still pleasant, the bottle may still be wearable. Spray it on clothing you do not mind, or wear it where the first minutes matter less. If the skin itself reacts, stop.

How to store perfume so it keeps its character

Good storage is simple, and it matters more than anything printed on the box.

• Keep it dark. Light breaks down aromatic materials. The original box, a drawer or a cupboard all work well. A clear bottle on a sunny windowsill is the worst place in the house.
• Keep it cool and steady. A bedroom drawer beats a bathroom shelf, where steam and warm showers raise the temperature every day. Avoid leaving perfume in a car.
• Keep the cap on. Every minute uncapped lets in more air. Put the cap back straight after spraying.
• Leave it still. There is no need to shake a bottle before you spray, and constant handling warms the liquid.
• Skip the fridge. It is not needed, and taking a bottle in and out of the cold only adds swings in temperature.

These habits slow ageing down. They do not stop it. Air still enters with every spray, and a large bottle worn a few times a month can stay open for a very long time.

Why a small bottle is finished at its best

Here is the part most shelf-life guides skip. The simplest way to avoid a perfume that has turned is to finish it while it is still fresh, and that is much easier with a small bottle than a large one.

A 10ml decant holds around 200 sprays. At three sprays a day, that is gone in about two months, long before heat and air have time to change it.
