What tobacco smells like in perfume

Forget the ashtray. The tobacco note in most perfumes is built around the dried, cured leaf, the smell of an unopened pouch rather than of smoke. It is sweet and round, with hints of hay, honey, raisins and tea, and a faint bitter edge that stops it from turning sugary.

Smoke, where you find it, usually comes from somewhere else in the formula: incense, dark woods or resins placed next to the leaf. That is why two tobacco perfumes can feel so different. Surround the leaf with vanilla and honey and it becomes sweet and golden. Put it beside spice, rum or incense and it turns dark and smoky. Pair it with citrus, herbs and leather and it dries out into something you could wear to the office.

Tobacco Vanille puts the tobacco leaf right at the top, warmed by spicy notes, then lets vanilla, cacao, tonka bean and tobacco blossom take over the heart. Dried fruits and woody notes carry it into the dry-down. Dense, sweet and dark, like a pouch of leaf opened next to the cacao tin. It launched in 2007 and is unisex. XJ 1861 Naxos by Xerjoff

XJ 1861 Naxos starts brighter than the rest of this group, with lavender, bergamot and lemon. Here the leaf goes out after dark. Spice, rum, coffee and incense push tobacco into a deeper, heavier register. These are the loudest perfumes in the guide, so they reward a careful hand and a cold evening.

Red Tobacco by Mancera

Red Tobacco is the smokiest of the twelve. Cinnamon, nutmeg, saffron, incense and agarwood (oud) arrive together, cut by green apple and white pear. Patchouli and jasmine form a short heart, and the base lays tobacco over Madagascar vanilla, amber, guaiac wood, Haitian vetiver, sandalwood and white musk. It launched in 2017 as a men's fragrance. Armani Code by Giorgio Armani

Armani Code opens with lemon and bergamot, turns to anise, olive blossom and guaiac wood, and dries down to leather, tonka bean and tobacco. Valentino Uomo Born In Roma Coral Fantasy opens with red apple, cardamom and Calabrian bergamot, moves to lavender, Bourbon geranium and clary sage, and finishes on Haitian vetiver, tobacco leaf and patchouli. Fruity and herbal on top, dry and green-edged below, with the leaf giving the vetiver some warmth. It launched in 2022 for men. On longevity, most community voters settle on long lasting. L'Eau d'Issey Pour Homme by Issey Miyake

L'Eau d'Issey Pour Homme is the lightest touch of tobacco in this guide. Yuzu, lemon, bergamot, mandarin orange and lemon verbena lead, with tarragon, cypress, coriander and calone for a fresh, watery edge. Blue lotus, nutmeg, saffron, Ceylon cinnamon and Bourbon geranium form the heart. Tobacco only appears in the base, beside Tahitian vetiver, cedar, sandalwood, amber and musk. How to wear a tobacco scent

• Go easy at first. The sweet and smoky styles carry. Start with one spray on the chest or the back of the neck, live with it for an hour, and only then decide whether you want more.
• Let the cold do the work. Most tobacco perfumes feel best when the air is cool, which is why they fill our winter perfumes page. For warmer days, look at the dry, aromatic style.
• Wait for the dry-down. Tobacco usually sits in the base, so the opening can mislead you. Judge a tobacco perfume after a few hours, not after the first minute.

Wear it before you buy the bottle

Tobacco is a note people tend to feel strongly about. Honey reads as warm to one person and as syrup to another, and incense can feel cosy or heavy depending on your skin and the weather. Reading notes gets you close. Wearing the perfume for a few days gets you the answer.

1. Choose one from each style. Take a sweet, a smoky and a dry tobacco, since those three differ the most. A 3ml decant holds around 60 sprays, so each one gets several days on your skin.
2. Wear it on an ordinary day. Spray in the morning, get on with your day, and notice how it smells in the afternoon and evening. That dry-down is the part you will live with.
