What does Ombre Leather smell like?

Ombre Leather is the 2018 Tom Ford eau de parfum, and its published pyramid is short. Cardamom sits alone at the top, so the first minutes are cool, green spice rather than citrus. The heart is leather with jasmine sambac woven through it: the flower keeps the leather soft and skin-like instead of harsh or tarry. The base is amber, moss and patchouli, which give it an earthy, slightly damp warmth as the hours pass.

Which Ombre Leather are the clones chasing?

Three other perfumes share the name, and several clones follow one of them rather than the 2018 bottle. The later Ombre Leather Parfum lists violet leaf, cedar, orris and tobacco beside the leather and jasmine; Fragrantica's comparison piece calls it finer, greener and colder, and the eau de parfum warmer and spicier. Ombre Leather 16, an earlier Private Blend, is no longer sold, according to a Fragrantica member. Eau d'Ombre Leather, the newest, is lighter, with ginger, coriander and vanilla softening the leather.

Rare Carbon by Afnan is the clone that owners of Ombre Leather praise most on the two Fragrantica forum threads cited below. One member who owns Tuscan Leather and both Ombre Leather versions finds it very close. On a second thread, one owner calls it very accurate, and another finds it very close and ranks it above Maison Alhambra's version. It shares the leather and amber, and it holds a soft floral heart in the same place.

The main difference: the note list is not the original's. Rare Carbon puts nutmeg and cinnamon where Ombre Leather has cardamom, rose and violet where it has jasmine, and a woody base of oud, cedar, vetiver and sandalwood. Members on its Fragrantica page are split: some call it the leading alternative, with traits of both the eau de parfum and the Parfum, while others find no cardamom at all and a scent closer to Tuscan Leather. Expect the same mood more than the same outline.

Who it suits: someone who wants a soft leather for cool weather and evenings, likes the Ombre Leather feel, and does not mind a fruitier, woodier route to it.

Opulence Leather by Maison Alhambra was first sold as Amber & Leather, and many shops and forum threads still use the old name. On paper it is the closest pick here: its listed pyramid runs cardamom, then leather and jasmine sambac, then amber, patchouli and moss, the same six notes as Ombre Leather.

The main difference: the finish is rougher. Owners of the original say it comes closest once it has dried down, but they describe a harsher first few minutes, a sweeter amber and more moss. Some find it turns into a powdery, synthetic iris after about half an hour.

Who it suits: the wearer who cares most about the base, and who will let a new bottle rest for a few weeks before judging it. It sits well on autumn nights.

Velvet Oud by Lattafa is the lowest-price bottle in the table. Its Fragrantica list is leather, oud, incense, amber, citrus, musk and cinnamon, so it shares the leather and amber and nothing else. Several members say it opens nearer to Tuscan Leather and moves towards Ombre Leather as it dries.

The main difference: it is darker and more oud-led, with a fruity, berry-like edge. Fragrantica members who know the original miss its jasmine, cardamom and moss, and one forum member who owns both Velvet Oud and Rare Carbon prefers Rare Carbon.

Who it suits: a first bottle to find out whether you like a leather scent at all, worn on cold evenings. Treat it as a leather-oud perfume in the same neighbourhood, not a stand-in for the whole pyramid.

Cuir Leather by Fragrance World is named after the style it follows. Several Fragrantica members call it the closest Ombre Leather clone they have tried, and some prefer it to Rare Carbon. It keeps the jasmine sambac and the leather at the centre.

The main difference: it follows the later Parfum more than the 2018 eau de parfum. Fragrantica's pyramid lists violet leaves, cedar, lily, jasmine sambac, leather, woods and tobacco, so it reads greener and cooler, without the cardamom-and-amber warmth. Some shops publish a list that mirrors the 2018 perfume instead, so there may be two editions. One member writing about the Parfum edition finds its leather faint.

Who it suits: someone who liked the Parfum version, or who wants a lighter leather for daytime and milder autumn weather.

Untethered by Alexandria Fragrances is an extrait de parfum, and the house states that it is inspired by Ombre Leather. Its stated pyramid follows the original closely: cardamom and saffron, leather and jasmine sambac, then amber, moss and patchouli. It costs the most per ml of the priced picks, which is why it sits in the premium spot.

The main difference: the saffron, and a lot more smoke. A Fragrantica member who owns the original describes Untethered as smokier and more incense-like, with the smoke covering the jasmine. The note list is the house's own, not an independent reading.

Who it suits: the wearer who finds Ombre Leather a little polite and wants a heavier, smokier leather for winter nights.

Shadow Leather by ALT. Fragrances is presented by the house as inspired by Ombre Leather, and its stated notes are leather, cardamom, jasmine, patchouli and amber: five of the original's six.

The main difference: Fragrantica members disagree on how close it is. One finds it very similar; another finds the leather less pronounced and the whole murkier and woodier. Read it as a darker, earthier leather rather than a bright one. The house's EU shop showed both sizes out of stock when we checked, so the table has no EU list price for it.

Who it suits: someone who wants the earthy side of Ombre Leather pushed further, for evenings in the cold months.

Know The Leather by Zara is the easy-going pick. Several Fragrantica members call it an obvious take on Ombre Leather, and Parfumo's similar-perfumes block lists Ombre Leather next to Tuscan Leather and the Ombre Leather Parfum. It shares leather, amber and patchouli.

The main difference: iris, florals, vanilla and woods replace the cardamom and jasmine, so it is smoother and more powdery. Some members say it drops to a skin scent early. Parfumo members are split: one calls it a fresher take with a synthetic dry-down, another finds it far from Ombre Leather. It also seems to have left Zara's shops; we found no current EU listing, so the table shows no price.

Who it suits: someone who wants a quiet, soft leather for the office, if they can still find a bottle.

Ombre Leather in a 10ml decant, or a clone?

For 27,18 €, 10ML fills a 10ml decant of Ombre Leather from the original bottle: around 200 sprays, enough for daily wear from October to early December. Each of the four 100ml clone bottles in the table costs about the same or less, so per ml the clones are far lower, and the dated table shows by how much.

What the gap buys you is the part the clones argue about: the cardamom at the top and the jasmine that keeps the leather soft. If you wear a leather scent once or twice a week, a 10ml decant of the original can carry you through a whole winter. If you want a leather scent on your wrist daily, a clone bottle makes more sense; keep a 3ml decant of Ombre Leather as the yardstick for choosing between them.

What every clone gets wrong

Put the note lists together and a pattern shows. Nearly every clone keeps the leather and the amber. The two notes that go missing most often are the cardamom and the jasmine, and they are what make Ombre Leather feel cool and supple rather than smoky or sweet.

The clones that keep both, Opulence Leather, Untethered and Shadow Leather, tend to lose the smoothness instead: their owners describe them as rougher, smokier or murkier. The clones that feel smooth, such as Rare Carbon and Know The Leather, reach it with different materials: rose, violet, iris and woods. A second pattern is fruit. How to test a dupe

A blotter is the wrong place to judge a leather scent. The first minutes of cardamom or berry are loud on paper, and the moss and patchouli only show on skin, hours later.

1. Learn the original first. Wear a 3ml of Ombre Leather for a few days, so you know what its base does on you.
2. Wear the clone on another day, on the same wrist, and smell it after breakfast, mid-afternoon and at night. Heat, weather and your skin all shift a perfume.
3. Let a new bottle rest for two or three weeks before you decide. Owners of Opulence Leather in particular say its opening calms down.
4. Judge the dry-down. By late afternoon, ask whether you still smell jasmine next to the leather, or only amber and wood.

If the clones do not convince you, three authentic perfumes share the same leather mood in the same sizes. Tuscan Leather by Tom Ford puts leather and jasmine over amber and suede, with raspberry, saffron and thyme on top.
