What does Ombre Leather smell like?
Ombre Leather is the 2018 Tom Ford eau de parfum, and its published pyramid is short. Cardamom sits alone at the top, so the first minutes are cool, green spice rather than citrus. The heart is leather with jasmine sambac woven through it: the flower keeps the leather soft and skin-like instead of harsh or tarry. The base is amber, moss and patchouli, which give it an earthy, slightly damp warmth as the hours pass.
Keep those six notes in mind. The clones below mostly get the leather right; they differ on how much cardamom, jasmine and moss they keep around it.
Which Ombre Leather are the clones chasing?
Three other perfumes share the name, and several clones follow one of them rather than the 2018 bottle. The later Ombre Leather Parfum lists violet leaf, cedar, orris and tobacco beside the leather and jasmine; Fragrantica's comparison piece calls it finer, greener and colder, and the eau de parfum warmer and spicier. Ombre Leather 16, an earlier Private Blend, is no longer sold, according to a Fragrantica member. Opulence Leather by Maison Alhambra was first sold as Amber & Leather, and many shops and forum threads still use the old name. Ombre Leather in a 10ml decant, or a clone?
For €27.81, 10ML fills a 10ml decant of Ombre Leather from the original bottle: around 200 sprays, enough for daily wear from October to early December. Each of the four 100ml clone bottles in the table costs about the same or less, so per ml the clones are far lower, and the dated table shows by how much.
What the gap buys you is the part the clones argue about: the cardamom at the top and the jasmine that keeps the leather soft. If you wear a leather scent once or twice a week, a 10ml decant of the original can carry you through a whole winter. If you want a leather scent on your wrist daily, a clone bottle makes more sense; keep a 3ml decant of Ombre Leather as the yardstick for choosing between them.
What every clone gets wrong
Put the note lists together and a pattern shows. Nearly every clone keeps the leather and the amber. The two notes that go missing most often are the cardamom and the jasmine, and they are what make Ombre Leather feel cool and supple rather than smoky or sweet.
The clones that keep both, Opulence Leather, Untethered and Shadow Leather, tend to lose the smoothness instead: their owners describe them as rougher, smokier or murkier. The clones that feel smooth, such as Rare Carbon and Know The Leather, reach it with different materials: rose, violet, iris and woods. A second pattern is fruit. How to test a dupe
A blotter is the wrong place to judge a leather scent. The first minutes of cardamom or berry are loud on paper, and the moss and patchouli only show on skin, hours later.
- Learn the original first. Wear a 3ml of Ombre Leather for a few days, so you know what its base does on you.
- Wear the clone on another day, on the same wrist, and smell it after breakfast, mid-afternoon and at night. Heat, weather and your skin all shift a perfume.
- Let a new bottle rest for two or three weeks before you decide. Owners of Opulence Leather in particular say its opening calms down.
- Judge the dry-down. By late afternoon, ask whether you still smell jasmine next to the leather, or only amber and wood.
