Gumin is the unexpected summer oud. Pineapple, mandarin orange, orange and bergamot give a juicy opening, jasmine, violet and rose follow, and musk, sandalwood, birch and oud close. Voters place it in summer and spring, with day and evening as the hours it suits. It is the one to try if you think oud is only for winter nights.

How to choose your first oud

Start from what you already wear. If you like florals, begin with a rose oud. If you like vanilla or amber, begin with a sweet one. If you prefer fresh citrus, the bright ouds are the place to start.

Then think about when you will wear it. Community votes place most of the heavier ouds in winter, fall and the evening, while Gumin is the one voted for summer and spring. Choose for the season you are in now, so you can judge the perfume on your own skin.

Finally, spray less than you expect. Several of these have sillage votes that lean strong or enormous, so one or two sprays from a 3ml decant is a fair first test. Wear it for a full day before you decide, then move on to the next style.

Climb from soft to dark with 3ml

Try the shortlist in a 3ml decant first. It gives you around 60 sprays, enough to wear a perfume through several days and see how it settles on you. When one earns a place, a 10ml decant gives around 200 sprays for weeks of wear, and a 30ml decant gives around 600 sprays to keep.
