Royal Oud by Creed dates from 2011 and starts bright. Pink pepper, lemon and Sicilian bergamot open it, then cedar, angelica and galbanum give a green, aromatic heart. Sandalwood, agarwood and musk sit underneath, so the oud arrives late and quietly.

Oud Satin Mood, from 2015, is listed as unisex and is more floral than woody. Bulgarian rose and Turkish rose open it, benzoin and violet sit in the heart, and agarwood meets vanilla at the base.

Which oud suits the office, an evening or winter

For the office, start with Oud Wood or Royal Oud. Oud Wood is listed for work. Royal Oud has community votes for office wear. Both have community votes that put sillage at moderate.

For an evening out, look at Oud Satin Mood, Halfeti or Wonderwood. Community voters pick each of them for evening wear or for night and evening wear.

For winter, the heavier group earns its place. Community voters most often pick Red Tobacco, Alexandria II, Interlude Man and Oud for Greatness for winter, or for winter and fall. Climb from soft to dark in 3ml

Oud is a scent you learn by wearing it, not by sniffing a card. A 3ml decant holds around 60 sprays, enough to wear it on several different days. The 10ml size holds around 200 sprays, for something you reach for regularly. The 30ml size holds around 600, for the one you keep.

Test one oud at a time. Spray it on your skin, not a card, and give it a full day before you judge it, because the opening and the dry-down can read very differently. Wear it on several separate days before you move on to the next one, so one scent does not blur into another. Keep a short note of the perfumes you tried and what you liked about each. Once one stands out, choose the size by how often you plan to reach for it: the 3ml to keep exploring, the 10ml for regular wear, the 30ml for a perfume you already know you want.
