What makes a fragrance feel right in winter

Cold weather changes what a perfume needs to do. A bright citrus that glows on a summer afternoon can feel thin in December, when your skin is cooler and most of it sits under wool. Winter scents lean on the heavier materials in the base, the ones that unfold slowly and stay close.

Spices do much of the work. Cinnamon, cardamom, pepper and ginger give an opening that feels like warming your hands. Below them sit the soft, sweet materials: vanilla, amber and tonka bean, which smells of almond, hay and vanilla together. Then come the darker ones, tobacco, incense and leather, which give a winter scent its depth and a little smoke. Very few good winter fragrances are heavy from the first second, though. Most start with something fresh, such as bergamot, lavender or mint, so the first minute feels clean before the warmth arrives. That arc, bright to deep, is what the perfumes below have in common.

How this shortlist was chosen

You cannot smell a perfume through a screen, so the first filter here is one you can read: the season votes of the fragrance community. Wearers record when they reach for a scent, and every perfume on this list is one that voters most often pick for winter, usually alongside autumn. That does not tell you whether you will love it, but it does tell you it was built for the cold rather than borrowed from summer.

The second filter is the occasion vote. Some of these perfumes are tagged most often for work, others for going out, and that is the most useful split for a man choosing a winter wardrobe. The office group stays warm without filling a meeting room. The evening group is sweeter, denser and louder, and most of its community sillage votes lean strong or beyond.

How to wear a winter fragrance

• Spray skin, not your coat. Pulse points and the chest warm the scent from below, while a scarf or collar holds only the top of it.
• Scale the dose to the vote. Where community sillage votes lean strong or enormous, start with one spray and add another only if you lose it.
• Keep the office group for daytime. The work-tagged scents above are the ones that sit well in a shared room; save the evening group for when you are leaving it.
• Give it time before you judge. Most of these perfumes change the most after the first hour, when the warm base takes over from the fresh opening.

Wear it before you buy the bottle

A winter fragrance is a big purchase to make from a description, and even the best notes list only tells you the shape of a scent, not how it sits on your skin on a cold morning. The simplest fix is to wear it first.

1. Pick one of each. Choose one scent from the office groups and one from the evening groups. In 3ml, each is around 60 sprays, enough to wear on several different days.
2. Wear it where you would wear it. Try the office scent at work and the evening scent at dinner. A perfume that pleases you at home can feel very different in a warm room full of people.
3. Keep the one you reach for. A 10ml decant, around 200 sprays, covers weeks of winter wear. A 30ml decant, around 600 sprays, is for the scent you reach for most, at the lowest price per ml.
