Y is a designer perfume, so the original itself is within easy reach in a small size: a 3ml of it costs 7,65 € and holds around 60 sprays. Never worn Y? Start there. A clone makes more sense once you know you like the scent and want a 100ml bottle to spray without counting.

What does Y Eau de Parfum smell like?

Yves Saint Laurent released Y Eau de Parfum in 2018 as a men's fragrance. It opens on apple, ginger and bergamot: crisp fruit with a warm bite. Sage, juniper berries and geranium make up the heart, which is where the herbal, green side of Y shows. The base pairs amberwood and tonka bean with cedar, vetiver and olibanum, so the sweetness stays dry and woody rather than sugary.

Its listed accords run aromatic, fresh spicy, woody and fruity, with amber further down. That mix of fresh apple on top and a warm, resinous base is the balance every clone below is judged against.

Four versions of Y, and which one a clone targets

The name covers four perfumes, and they are not interchangeable. Every comparison in this guide is with Y Eau de Parfum. The Eau de Toilette drops the apple for aldehydes and adds lavender, ambergris and vanilla. The Eau de Parfum Intense also loses the apple and the tonka bean, and turns earthier with lavender and patchouli. Y Le Parfum keeps the apple but adds aldehydes and grapefruit up top, with lavender at its heart and patchouli lower down. When a clone is sold as "Y", check which of the four it is aimed at.

Midnight Desert by Lou de Pre leads on a near-unanimous vote. On its Parfumo comparison page, all but one of the voting members find it similar to Y Eau de Parfum, from a larger group than the unanimous votes for Dunescape and Move On. Its Fragrantica listing gives the same apple, ginger, sage, juniper, amberwood, tonka, vetiver and olibanum as the original.

The main difference lies in how much is known about it. The vote comes from a smaller group of members than the larger comparisons here, and no source we read describes its dry-down on its own terms. What we have is one Fragrantica member who has tried Y and wore Midnight Desert for about a year, and who finds it close enough that the original became redundant for them.

It suits someone who trusts a near-unanimous vote and one long-time wearer's verdict, and is happy to rely on fewer opinions than a bigger vote would give. Basis: a named source, the vote on Parfumo plus a single member's write-up on Fragrantica.

By one Fragrantica member's account, Odyssey Mega by Armaf starts out near Y Eau de Parfum and then drifts sweeter. On Parfumo's comparison page, more than nine in ten voters call it similar to Y Eau de Parfum.

The main difference shows later on. A member writing on Fragrantica finds the opening very similar to Y Eau de Parfum, but the dry-down sweeter, muskier and led by amberwood, with less of the apple. Fragrantica's note list also adds pineapple, citrus and mint; Y lists neither pineapple nor mint.

It suits someone who enjoys the base of Y more than its fresh top and would like it warmer and sweeter. Basis: a named source, the Parfumo vote and a Fragrantica write-up.

Sheikh Al Shuyukh Final Edition by Lattafa is where the members who wrote about it disagree. On Parfumo's comparison page, more than four in five voters call the two similar.

The main difference, for one owner, is depth. In the same Fragrantica forum thread, a member who owns it rates it closer to Y Eau de Parfum than Fakhar Black, but darker, and better suited to colder weather in their view. Another member there disagrees and finds it less close, greener, with a prominent apple.

It suits someone who wants a darker version of the Y idea, as one owner describes it and accepts that the two members who compared it in that thread do not agree. Basis: a named source, the Parfumo vote and two forum members with opposite views.

Dunescape by Armaf has a small but unanimous vote: on its Parfumo comparison page, every member who voted finds it similar to Y Eau de Parfum.

The main difference is on paper. Its Fragrantica listing keeps the ginger, sage, juniper, apple and geranium of Y but puts them under a citrus top of blood orange, bergamot, mandarin and lemon, adds ozonic notes, cashmeran and rose, and closes on musk, amber and sandalwood. On paper, that gives citrus and ozonic notes a larger share than they have in Y.

It suits someone drawn to the herbal heart of Y who would trade some of the warm base for a brighter citrus start. Basis: a named source, the Parfumo vote, with the notes from Fragrantica.

Move On by La Rive undercuts every other priced clone here, on the 100ml bottle and on each ml. On its Parfumo comparison page, every member who voted finds it similar to Y Eau de Parfum, and its Fragrantica listing gives the same notes as the original.

The main difference is strength. Move On is an eau de toilette, not an eau de parfum, and a Fragrantica member who owns Y finds it very close but short-lived on the skin, with little sillage.

It suits someone who wants the general Y style for the smallest spend and accepts reapplying as part of the deal. Basis: a named source, the Parfumo vote and one owner's write-up on Fragrantica.

Where the clones part from Y

Two patterns run through the write-ups. The first is sweetness: one member finds Odyssey Mega's dry-down sweeter and muskier than Y. The second is weight: Move On, an eau de toilette, is described by one owner as short-lived.

What the votes cannot tell you is which version of Y a clone sits nearest to. No source here places a clone between two versions. If you love the Intense or Le Parfum, none of the sources here names a match, so wear the version you actually want before buying a clone of it.

Clone bottle or a small bottle of Y?

The table prices two clones, Odyssey Mega and Move On, each as a 100ml bottle. Midnight Desert, Sheikh Al Shuyukh Final Edition and Dunescape show "No EU list price found": we found no euro listing for them in stock on the check date. Both work out at a small fraction of the original's price per ml.

A 10ml decant of Y Eau de Parfum comes to 2,19 €/ml, and the 30ml to 1,84 €/ml, or 55,08 € for around 600 sprays. For a scent you would spray daily, a clone gives you far more millilitres. For a scent you have not yet worn, the 3ml tells you whether you want Y at all before you buy 100ml of anything. To compare versions, the Eau de Toilette is 7,83 € and Y Le Parfum 8,19 € for a 3ml. Original perfumes in the same aromatic-woody style

Fakhar Black by Lattafa, which 10ML stocks, is the similar original with the biggest vote beside Y Eau de Parfum: on Parfumo's comparison page, 287 of 320 voting members find the two similar. Its list runs apple, bergamot and ginger, then lavender, sage, juniper berries and geranium, over tonka bean, cedar, amberwood and vetiver. A Fragrantica member who owns Y finds the two really close, and another finds it lighter, with a sweeter apple opening.

Three more perfumes from other houses share part of Y Eau de Parfum's structure. Paragon by Initio Parfums Prives opens on lavender, sage and bergamot, then turns to plum, palo santo and black pepper over sandalwood and oud: the herbal start of Y with a darker, woodier finish. Terre d'Hermès Eau Intense Vetiver by Hermès shares bergamot, geranium, olibanum, amberwood and vetiver, with grapefruit and lemon on top, Sichuan pepper in the heart and patchouli below: an earthier, more citrus-led take. Perseus by Parfums de Marly puts grapefruit, bergamot and black currant over vetiver and geranium, then cedar, tonka bean, balsam fir and ambergris: a fresher, fruit-and-woods route.

How to test a YSL Y dupe

The write-ups disagree most about the opening apple and the overall weight, so watch both. Wear Y Eau de Parfum on skin one day and the clone the next, never both at once. In the first minutes, ask whether the apple reads crisp or candied. In the heart, check that the sage and juniper still come through. Then, late in the day, see whether the clone keeps the dry amberwood and vetiver of Y or has gone soft and sweet.
