Smooth and woody oud

If you have never worn oud, start here. These four keep the resin soft and let woods, spice or flowers do the talking.

Oud Wood by Tom Ford

Oud Wood, launched in 2007, is the first pick here. It opens with agarwood, Brazilian rosewood and cardamom. Sichuan pepper, sandalwood and vanilla follow in the heart. Vetiver, tonka bean and amber close it.

It is listed for men and for work. On longevity, community votes lean moderate. Most voters call its sillage moderate. Winter and fall are the seasons voters pick it for most.

Royal Oud by Creed

Royal Oud by Creed dates from 2011 and starts bright. Pink pepper, lemon and Sicilian bergamot open it, then cedar, angelica and galbanum give a green, aromatic heart. Sandalwood, agarwood and musk sit underneath, so the oud arrives late and quietly.

Community votes lean long lasting for staying power. Most voters put its sillage at moderate. Voters also place it at the office, and in day and evening wear.

Wonderwood by Comme des Garçons

Wonderwood was composed by Antoine Lie and launched in 2010. Bergamot, Madagascar pepper, caraway and nutmeg open it crisp and dry. Cypress, Virginia cedar, incense and vetiver make a dry, woody heart. Sandalwood, guaiac wood, agarwood, cashmeran and patchouli hold the base.

Voters lean long lasting on its longevity. Most voters say its sillage is strong. It is picked most often for winter and fall.

Oud Satin Mood by Maison Francis Kurkdjian

Oud Satin Mood, from 2015, is listed as unisex and is more floral than woody. Bulgarian rose and Turkish rose open it, benzoin and violet sit in the heart, and agarwood meets vanilla at the base.

Most voters call its staying power long lasting. Votes on its sillage lean strong. Fall is the season it is picked for most, and evening is the time of day.

Spiced, sweet and rose oud for evenings

These four add cinnamon, rose, vanilla or civet. Community votes put each of them on evening wear.

Red Tobacco by Mancera

Red Tobacco arrived in 2017 and opens with cinnamon, nutmeg, agarwood, incense, saffron, green apple and white pear. Patchouli and jasmine form the heart. The base is tobacco and Madagascar vanilla with amber, guaiac wood, Haitian vetiver, sandalwood and white musk, sweet and smoky.

Most voters call its longevity eternal. Sillage votes lean enormous. Winter is its most-picked season, with night and evening the usual hours.

Layton Exclusif by Parfums de Marly

Layton Exclusif, from 2017, opens with almond, mandarin orange, bergamot and watery notes. Civet, rose, geranium, gardenia and water lily make a floral heart. Laotian oud sits with guaiac wood, vanilla, coffee, sandalwood and amber underneath, with patchouli, pink pepper and oakmoss at the edges.

Most voters call its longevity long lasting. Most voters say its sillage is strong. Voters wear it most in winter and fall, at night and in the evening.

Oud for Greatness launched in 2018 and keeps its pyramid short. Lavender, nutmeg and saffron open it, agarwood takes the heart, and musk and patchouli close it.

Most voters call its longevity eternal. Sillage votes lean strong. Winter and fall lead the seasonal votes, and night leads the hours.

Which oud suits the office, an evening or winter

For the office, start with Oud Wood or Royal Oud. Oud Wood is listed for work. Royal Oud has community votes for office wear. Both have community votes that put sillage at moderate.

For an evening out, look at Oud Satin Mood, Halfeti or Wonderwood. Community voters pick each of them for evening wear or for night and evening wear.

For winter, the heavier group earns its place. Community voters most often pick Red Tobacco, Alexandria II, Interlude Man and Oud for Greatness for winter, or for winter and fall. Our guides to winter colognes for men and best perfumes for men cover the wider range if oud turns out not to be your thing.

Climb from soft to dark in 3ml

Oud is a scent you learn by wearing it, not by sniffing a card. A 3ml decant holds around 60 sprays, enough to wear it on several different days. The 10ml size holds around 200 sprays, for something you reach for regularly. The 30ml size holds around 600, for the one you keep.

Start with a 3ml of Oud Wood at €18.81 and one from the spiced group, such as Halfeti at €12.96. If you want more, move to a 3ml of Interlude Man at €13.77. If one earns a place in your rotation, the 10ml size of Royal Oud is €36.27. Our guide to what a decant is explains how a decant works.

Test one oud at a time. Spray it on your skin, not a card, and give it a full day before you judge it, because the opening and the dry-down can read very differently. Wear it on several separate days before you move on to the next one, so one scent does not blur into another. Keep a short note of the perfumes you tried and what you liked about each. Once one stands out, choose the size by how often you plan to reach for it: the 3ml to keep exploring, the 10ml for regular wear, the 30ml for a perfume you already know you want.
