How to make perfume last longer: 11 tips that work
If your perfume disappears by lunchtime, the fix is usually in how you apply and store it, not in buying a stronger bottle. Eleven habits that make a real difference.
In deze gids
Few things are more disappointing than a fragrance you love vanishing an hour after you put it on. Sometimes the perfume really is a light one, but just as often the problem is how it is applied, where it is sprayed or how the bottle is kept. The good news is that most of the fixes cost nothing. Here is why perfume fades, and eleven habits that help it last.

Why perfume fades
A fragrance is a blend of materials that evaporate at different speeds. The top notes, usually citrus, fresh herbs and light fruits, are the most volatile and are largely gone within the first hour. The heart follows over the next few hours. The base, typically woods, resins, amber, musk and vanilla, evaporates slowly and is what you still smell in the evening.
So when people say a perfume "doesn't last", they often mean one of three things: the fragrance is mostly top notes, it is not holding well on their skin, or they have simply stopped noticing it. Each has a different fix.

1. Apply to moisturised skin
Fragrance holds better on hydrated skin than on dry skin. Apply a fragrance-free body lotion a few minutes before you spray, or use one from the same scent family. This is the single easiest change for most people. Some people also swear by a thin layer of petroleum jelly on the pulse points before spraying; it is worth a try if your skin is very dry.
2. Spray straight after a shower
Warm, clean, freshly moisturised skin is the ideal base. Pat dry, apply lotion, then spray while your skin is still slightly warm.
3. Choose warm spots
Pulse points such as the inside of the wrists, the base of the throat, behind the ears and the inside of the elbows are warmer than the surrounding skin, and that warmth helps a fragrance develop and radiate steadily through the day.
4. Don't rub your wrists together
It is a habit almost everyone has, and it does not help. Rubbing warms the skin and speeds up the evaporation of the top notes, so the opening you liked in the shop disappears faster. Spray, then leave it alone to dry.
5. Mist your hair, lightly
Hair holds scent well and releases it as you move. Because most fragrances contain alcohol, which can be drying, spray from a distance so only a fine mist lands on the lengths, or spray once onto a hairbrush and brush through.
6. Use clothing with care
Natural fibres such as wool and cotton hold fragrance for a long time, sometimes into the next day. The catch is that perfume can mark delicate fabrics like silk and pale colours, so test on an inside seam first, or spray onto a scarf you are happy to dedicate to the task.
7. Pick the right concentration
The same fragrance often comes in more than one strength. Eau de parfum, parfum, elixir and extrait versions generally contain more fragrance oil than an eau de toilette or cologne, so they tend to last longer on skin. If you love a scent but it fades on you, look for a stronger version of it.
8. Choose fragrances with a rich base
If longevity is your priority, look at the base notes before you buy. Fragrances built on amber, vanilla, tonka, woods, resins, leather or musk usually last much longer than those built mainly on citrus and aquatic notes. Our long-lasting scents collection gathers fragrances with that kind of structure, and our guide to the best long-lasting perfumes for men goes into ten of them in detail.
9. Layer with a matching base
Wearing a second, simpler fragrance underneath can anchor a light scent. A clean musk, a soft vanilla or a single-molecule fragrance under a fresh citrus gives the citrus something to hold on to. Our perfume layering guide has pairings built from real notes.
10. Store your perfume properly
Heat, light and air break fragrance down over time, and a degraded fragrance fades faster and smells flatter. Keep bottles cool, out of direct sunlight and away from the steam of a bathroom, with the cap on between uses. A drawer or the original box is ideal.
11. Carry a small bottle for a top-up
Even the best-applied fragrance fades eventually. A 10ml decant holds around 200 sprays and fits in a pocket, a gym bag or a small evening bag, so one spray in the afternoon carries a scent comfortably into the evening. It also sits well within the usual 100ml limit for liquids in cabin bags.
Are you just used to it?
Before you conclude that a perfume has disappeared, remember that your nose adapts to smells it meets constantly. Within minutes of spraying, your brain begins to filter out your own fragrance, even though the people around you can still smell it. This is why so many people over-spray.
Two quick checks help. Smell the inside of your wrist directly rather than the air around you, or ask someone close whether they can still notice it. If they can, the fragrance is lasting fine; you have simply become used to it. The fix is to switch fragrances every few days so your nose stays fresh, not to add more sprays.
A simple routine to try
If you want to put all of this into practice, here is a morning routine that combines the habits that matter most.
- Shower, pat dry and apply a fragrance-free body lotion to your arms, neck and chest.
- Wait a minute, then spray once on each wrist and once at the base of the throat, from a hand's width away.
- Let the fragrance dry without rubbing, then dress.
- If you like, add one light mist to your hair or to a scarf.
- Put your 10ml decant in your bag for a single spray in the afternoon.
Try it for a week with the same fragrance, and compare it with how the scent lasted before. For most people the difference is obvious by day three.
What doesn't help
- Spraying more and more. More fragrance means more projection early on, not a longer life for the base notes, and it is easy to overwhelm the people around you.
- Spraying into the air and walking through it. Most of the fragrance ends up on the floor.
- Keeping bottles on a sunny shelf. It looks lovely, but it shortens the life of the perfume.
Try before you commit
Longevity is personal. The same fragrance can last all day on one person and fade by lunch on another, which is why it pays to test on your own skin. A 3ml decant holds around 60 sprays and a 10ml decant around 200, roughly three weeks and two months at three sprays a day, enough to see how a fragrance really behaves on you before buying a full bottle. If you are curious about the maths, our guide on how long a 10ml bottle of perfume lasts breaks it down.
Veelgestelde vragen
- Why does my perfume fade so quickly?
- Usually for one of three reasons: the fragrance is built mostly on light top notes such as citrus, it is not holding well on dry skin, or your nose has simply adapted to it. Moisturised skin, a fragrance with a richer base and a stronger concentration all help.
- Where should I spray perfume so it lasts longer?
- On warm pulse points such as the inside of the wrists, the base of the throat, behind the ears and the inside of the elbows, on moisturised skin. A light mist on the hair or a natural-fibre scarf also holds scent well, but test delicate fabrics first.
- Does rubbing your wrists together make perfume fade faster?
- Yes, it tends to. Rubbing warms the skin and speeds up the evaporation of the top notes, so the opening fades sooner. Spray, then let the fragrance dry on its own.
- How should I store perfume so it lasts?
- Somewhere cool and dark with the cap on, such as a drawer or the original box. Heat, light and air break fragrance down over time, so avoid sunny windowsills and steamy bathrooms.
