How long does a 10ml bottle of perfume last?

The short answer

A 10ml decant gives you around 200 sprays. At three sprays a day, the dose most people settle on, that is roughly two months of daily wear. Wear it every other day, or rotate it with other scents, and the same bottle easily stretches past three months.

That makes the 10ml size the one we think of as a proper trial: long enough to wear a perfume through different weather, moods and occasions, and to find out whether you still reach for it in week six, not just on day one.

How many sprays are in a 10ml bottle?

A single spray from a perfume atomiser is a fraction of a millilitre, so the count depends a little on the nozzle and on how firmly you press. The figures we work with for our decants are:

• 3ml decant: around 60 sprays
• 10ml decant: around 200 sprays
• 30ml decant: around 600 sprays

Treat these as good estimates rather than exact numbers. A short, half-pressed spray uses less; a long press uses more. The pattern holds, though: every millilitre is roughly twenty sprays.

How long a 10ml bottle lasts at your usual dose

Most people wear between one and five sprays at a time. Here is how 200 sprays works out if you wear the same scent every day:

• 1 spray a day: about 200 days, well over six months
• 2 sprays a day: about 100 days, a little over three months
• 3 sprays a day: about 66 days, roughly two months
• 4 sprays a day: about 50 days, around seven weeks
• 5 sprays a day: about 40 days, just under six weeks

If you rotate between several scents

Very few people wear one perfume every single day. If you keep a small wardrobe of three or four scents and wear each one about twice a week at three sprays, a single 10ml bottle lasts around eight months. That is why a handful of decants often covers a whole year of wearing for less shelf space than one full bottle.

3ml, 10ml or 30ml: which size fits

Each size answers a different question, and the right one depends on how sure you already are.

• A 3ml decant is for discovery. At three sprays a day it lasts about three weeks, which is enough to get past the first impression and meet the heart and base of a fragrance.
• A 10ml decant is for living with a scent. About two months of daily wear, it fits in a jacket pocket or a small bag, and it is the size most people choose when a perfume is already a strong candidate.
• A 30ml bottle is for a scent that has won you over. More than six months at three sprays a day, and the best value per spray of the three.

How long does the scent last on your skin?

This is a different question from how long the bottle lasts, and the answer depends on the perfume rather than the size you buy it in. A decant holds the same fragrance as the original bottle, and our atomisers spray just like the original, so a perfume projects and lasts on your skin exactly as it would from the full flacon.

What decides skin longevity:

• Concentration. Eau de parfum and parfum generally carry more fragrance oil than eau de toilette or eau de cologne, so they tend to last longer on the skin.
• The notes. Citrus and fresh herbs are light molecules that fade within the first hour. Woods, resins, amber, musk and vanilla are heavier and can linger for many hours.
• Your skin. Dry skin tends to hold fragrance for less time than moisturised skin, which is why a fragrance-free body lotion before spraying often helps.
• The weather. Heat makes a fragrance project further but burn off faster; cold air mutes it, and rich scents often come into their own in winter.

Getting more wear from every spray

The easiest way to make a 10ml decant last longer is to make each spray count, rather than adding more of them.

• Spray from a short distance. Hold the atomiser a hand's width from your skin so the mist lands on you, not in the air around you.
• Choose warm spots. The inside of the wrists, the base of the throat and behind the ears release scent steadily with body heat, so two well-placed sprays often do the work of four scattered ones.
• Remember you stop noticing it. Your nose adapts to a familiar smell within minutes. If you can no longer smell your perfume, the people around you usually still can, so resist the extra spray.

Does perfume go off?

Perfume does not have a strict use-by date, but it does change over time, and three things speed that up: heat, light and air. Kept cool, dark and with the cap on, most fragrances stay close to how they smelled on day one for years. Left on a sunny windowsill or in a steamy bathroom, they can turn much sooner.

The first part of a perfume to change is usually the opening. Signs that a bottle has turned include a sharp or sour first spray, a flat smell where there used to be sparkle, or a noticeably darker colour.

A 10ml decant has a practical advantage here: you finish it long before age becomes an issue. Store it in a drawer or its box rather than on a bathroom shelf, keep the cap on between uses, and it will smell the same in the last spray as in the first.

Travelling with a 10ml bottle
