What does Louis Vuitton Imagination smell like?

Imagination by Louis Vuitton launched in 2021 as a men's scent, though its character is easy for anyone to wear. The top is citron, Calabrian bergamot and Sicilian orange: clean, bright and slightly bitter. Warmth comes next, from ginger grown in Nigeria, cinnamon from Ceylon and a Tunisian neroli. Underneath, Chinese black tea rests on Ambroxan, guaiac wood and olibanum, so the scent dries down to a smooth, faintly smoky tea on a mineral, skin-like base.

It is a fresh scent with a spine. The citrus fades, but the tea and Ambroxan hold the shape for the rest of the day.

Louis Vuitton makes one concentration, the Eau de Parfum, so there is no version question here. The collector's bottles you may see listed are special editions of it, not new formulas.

Marwa by Arabiyat Prestige is a clone EU buyers can actually find, and it keeps the core of the original. Its Parfumo comparison page lists bergamot, ginger and petitgrain, then Chinese black tea, geranium and frankincense, then Ambroxan, musk and gaiac wood. The tea, ginger and Ambroxan structure of the original is all there.

The main difference is the brightness. There is no citron or orange on its list, and no cinnamon; petitgrain and geranium stand in, which makes the opening greener and a touch soapier. The Parfumo community gives it the same fresh, citrus and aquatic profile as Imagination, but adds a synthetic facet and no green one. In a Fragrantica forum thread on the best Imagination alternative sold in the EU, a member recommends it for its soapy opening that settles into tea and musk.

It suits someone who wants the everyday Imagination feel, clean tea and skin, for the office and warm weekends. Basis: a named source, with the notes from Parfumo.

Hectic by Bujairami has the most complete note list of the seven. Parfumo lists citron, Calabrian bergamot and Sicilian orange; Nigerian ginger, Ceylon cinnamon and Tunisian neroli; and Chinese black tea, Ambroxan, frankincense and gaiac wood. Tier by tier, that follows the published pyramid of Imagination, including the tea-and-wood base that carries the dry-down. A Fragrantica member who smelled the original finds Hectic's opening more citrusy and juicy, but finds the two very close once it dries down.

The main difference is the spice. The Parfumo community ranks it citrus and fresh, then spicy, with spice higher than in the original's profile and a fruity facet added. A member on Fragrantica comparing three Imagination alternatives found Hectic the best-smelling and most complex of the three. It is less widely stocked than the others, and sellers disagree on its concentration.

It suits someone who loves the later hours of Imagination, when the tea and Ambroxan take over. Basis: named sources on Fragrantica, with the notes from Parfumo.

Hawas Kobra by Rasasi is the warm, loud one. Parfumo lists bergamot, ginger and mandarin; green tea, neroli and cinnamon; musk, ambergris and woody notes. It shares the citrus-ginger-cinnamon opening and the tea heart.

The main difference is heat. Members on its Fragrantica page describe it as a twist on Imagination that is louder, spicier and soapier, and Parfumo's community ranks spice, fruit and sweetness higher than for the original. Darker here means warmer: more cinnamon and ginger, less of the cool mineral finish. The tea is listed as green tea rather than black.

It suits someone who finds Imagination too polite and wants a spicier version for evenings and cooler weather. Basis: a named source. The only EUR price we found came from an older crawl of a retailer page, so the table shows none.

Art of Arabia I by Lattafa lists much of the original's structure: Parfumo gives mint and bergamot, then black tea, ginger and lavender, then Ambroxan, cinnamon and frankincense.

The main difference is mint and sweetness. A member comparing Imagination alternatives on Fragrantica finds it much sweeter, mintier and fresher, with less tea and spice, their least favourite of the group. On Parfumo, though, the community profile matches the original's six facets, which shows how far opinions spread on this one.

It suits someone who likes a sweeter, more aromatic tea scent and does not need the citrus sparkle. Basis: a named source, and a divided one. As with Hawas Kobra, our only EUR price reading was too old to show.

Sunrise on the Red Sand Dunes by Zara is the easiest pick to buy in the EU and the lowest-priced bottle in the table. Parfumo lists bergamot, mandarin, amber, blackcurrant, ginger, orange blossom and tonka bean. It shares the bergamot, the ginger and a clean amber base.

The main difference is the tea: there is none on its list, and no neroli either. Blackcurrant and tonka make it fruitier and sweeter, and the Parfumo community ranks it fresh, citrus and fruity, with aquatic last of its six facets. In a Fragrantica thread on favourite Imagination alternatives, a member calls it close but not as well blended.

It suits someone who wants the bright, clean mood of Imagination for casual days, on a high-street budget. Basis: a named source.

Amber Oud Aqua Dubai by Al Haramain is not sold as an Imagination alternative, but it is often put forward as one. Parfumo lists green notes, bergamot and mandarin; blackcurrant, amber, melon and pineapple; musk, petitgrain, galbanum and vanilla. The shared ground is the bergamot and the clean, soapy citrus-musk feel.

The main difference is that it is almost a different scent. A member on Fragrantica who compared many alternatives calls it the soapiest of them, with the least tea and less spice. Melon, pineapple and galbanum make it greener and more aquatic than the original.

It suits someone who loves the freshness of Imagination for summer and sport, and does not mind losing the tea. Basis: a named source.

Game of Spades Fullhouse by Jo Milano sells at a niche-house price, well above the other clones, but we found no dated EU price for it, so the table shows none. Parfumo lists Calabrian bergamot, Sicilian lemon and Sicilian orange; Ceylon cinnamon, Tunisian neroli and ginger; Ambroxan, Chinese black tea, frankincense and gaiac wood. That is very close to the published pyramid of the original, with lemon in place of citron.

The main difference, on its listing, is sweetness and fruit. The Parfumo community ranks it citrus and fresh, then fruity and sweet, with a synthetic facet, and leans its style modern ahead of masculine. There is less independent comment on it than on the other clones.

It suits someone who wants the full Imagination structure and is prepared to pay a niche-house price for it. Basis: published notes.

What every clone gets wrong

The black tea is the hard part. Two clones in this guide, Sunrise and Aqua Dubai, list no tea at all, and Hawas Kobra and Art of Arabia I list green tea or plain black tea in place of the original's Chinese black tea. That note is what turns Imagination from a citrus cologne into something drier and more grown-up, and a clone that does not list it has to find that dryness somewhere else.

The second gap is balance. The original keeps its citrus, spice and tea in proportion; clones tend to push one of them. Hawas Kobra and Hectic lean into spice, Sunrise and Fullhouse into fruit, Aqua Dubai into soap and green notes. None is wrong, but each is a choice the original does not make. Parfumo's community also adds a synthetic facet to several of them that it does not give Imagination.

Clone or a 10ml decant of Imagination?

Per ml, the original is the premium choice. A 10ml decant of Imagination costs 42,84 € (4,28 €/ml), and the 30ml costs 107,64 € (3,59 €/ml). Every clone we could price sells a 100ml bottle for less than that 30ml, so if you want to spray freely every day, a clone gives you far more for the money.

The decant wins on the decision itself. A 3ml decant, around 60 sprays, costs 16,92 €, less than most clone bottles in the table, and a week of wear tells you whether you want the original, a clone, or neither. Authentic perfumes in the same family

If you would rather stay with authentic perfume, these four come nearest to parts of the Imagination profile. Eau Parfumée Thé Impérial by Bvlgari is the simplest: citrus over black tea and musk, the tea core without the spice. Afternoon Swim, also by Louis Vuitton, sets bergamot, mandarin and Sicilian orange over aquatic notes, ambergris and ginger, a sunnier citrus with no tea. Dior Homme Cologne is Calabrian bergamot, grapefruit blossom and white musk, clean and soapy-fresh. Ingenious Ginger by Goldfield & Banks opens on bergamot, ginger and lemon over amber, musk and sandalwood.

How to test a dupe

Compare on skin, one scent per day, rather than both wrists at once. Check each at three points: the citrus opening, the spiced heart, and the tea and Ambroxan dry-down 4 to 8 hours later on skin. Imagination's dry-down is where most clones show their gaps, so do not judge from the first spray.
