What does Le Gemme Tygar smell like?

Le Gemme Tygar by Bvlgari is a grapefruit perfume with an ambergris accord. Bvlgari's own page names only those two accords. Fragrantica gives the fuller list: grapefruit, ginger, ambrette, ambroxan, musk, vetiver and patchouli. That reads as bright grapefruit and ginger over a musk and ambroxan base. There are two versions on 10ML. Le Gemme Tygar Extrait keeps the same two accords and adds Siam benzoin and Peru balsam absolutes, according to Bvlgari. Alexandria Fragrances also makes a Black Panther Extrait, made after Tygar Extrait.

Black Panther by Alexandria Fragrances leads, and it shares three listed notes with Tygar. Alexandria presents it as inspired by Bvlgari Tygar, built on grapefruit, ambroxan, musk and woods, on its own product page.

Its strength is the finish. Fragrantica users who own both find the dry-down very similar to Tygar's, and one finds the two much closer as the perfume settles. The difference is the start: they find Tygar's grapefruit opening smoother and more natural. On Basenotes, one member who owns Black Panther and has smelled Tygar says the two are very close. Another finds its grapefruit closer to a lemon cleaner and the ginger sparkle missing, in a Basenotes thread.

Choose it if the late hours of the day matter more to you than the first spray. Read the Fragrantica comments before you buy.

Aaron Levine is the honest budget pick, not a clone. A Fragrantica user finds it aiming at Tygar's profile, with a similar grapefruit-over-smooth-woods opening. The same user finds it turns damp and musty after the opening. Other users describe a warm, balsamic, sandalwood dry-down.

Zara lists grapefruit, orange blossom and an incense accord over sandalwood, Peru balsam and ambrox. Peru balsam also appears in Bvlgari's description of Tygar Extrait, which is the one link we can document. Choose it if the lowest price matters most and you accept the risk of the musty turn. Kajal III leans brighter than Tygar. On Fragrantica, one user finds it more sparkling and refreshing than Tygar, and another finds its opening juicier, with the citrus pushed further. Kajal lists grapefruit, lemon zest and lemon soda over ginger, rosemary, neroli and lavender, so it shares grapefruit and ginger with Tygar's list.

A Basenotes member calls it the overlooked one in this style: stronger and sharper than Tygar, with an added orange and lemonade feel. One Tygar owner dissents on Fragrantica, finding its ambroxan sharper and closer to Théorème Homme than to Tygar.

Al Qiam Silver by Lattafa Pride is the sweeter reading. A Fragrantica user finds it really close to Tygar, maybe slightly sweeter and less versatile. Another, who has smelled Tygar, calls it the closest to the original they know, though several mention short wear.

Parfumo's comparison page shows 111 of 129 voting members finding it similar to Tygar. It also classifies Al Qiam Silver as sweet and aquatic, where Tygar is spicy and synthetic. Aqua de Dora by Pana Dora is the warmer, darker option. A Fragrantica forum member who owns Tygar and Aqua de Dora calls it the warmest of the three perfumes compared, with a touch of fig and chestnut, and Tygar the most purely grapefruit.

A Parfumo member finds it very similar to Tygar, sharing a grapefruit and ambroxan core, with more lemon in the opening and more complexity from chestnut, fig and cashmeran, and very similar on the dry-down. A Basenotes member who owns both finds less ginger and a fig and cashmeran accord that makes it slightly more mature.

Mahina by Parfums d'Elmar is the odd one out. Parfumo's comparison page shows 140 of 155 voting members finding it similar to Tygar, though no listed note is shared. Parfumo classifies Mahina as fruity, sweet and floral.

What every clone gets wrong

Across the comments gathered here, the gap is mostly the opening and the finish. Fragrantica owners find Tygar's grapefruit smoother and more natural than Black Panther's, and a Basenotes member finds Black Panther's grapefruit closer to a lemon cleaner, with the ginger sparkle missing.

One Basenotes member misses the ginger sparkle in Black Panther, and one Fragrantica user finds Aaron Levine turns damp and musty within minutes. The honest summary: every pick here comes with a difference that an owner, a user or Parfumo's classification names.

Four perfumes that share Tygar's notes

If you want a grapefruit-and-ginger perfume you can buy in a decant, four others list notes in common with Tygar. Vibrato by Sospiro lists grapefruit and ginger, with musk and patchouli in the base. L'Immensité by Louis Vuitton lists grapefruit, ginger and ambroxan. Ingenious Ginger by Goldfield & Banks lists ginger, musk and patchouli. The Hedonist Extrait by Ex Nihilo lists grapefruit, ginger, patchouli and vetiver.

One more original that 10ML stocks is often set beside Tygar, though it shares none of its listed notes. Turathi Blue by Afnan, a similar original, has the widest vote: on Parfumo's comparison page, 586 of 646 voting members find the two similar. It is built on citrus, woods and amber over musk, spices and patchouli. On Fragrantica, one member finds it very close to Tygar once settled, with a harsher citrus start, and another finds its patchouli dry-down earthier and less airy.

How to test a Tygar clone against the original

Choosing a Bvlgari Tygar dupe is a skin question, not a paper one. A strip shows you the grapefruit, but the dry-down only appears on your skin, and that is where owners say the clones differ. Wear Tygar on one day and the clone on another, so each has the whole day to settle. Then compare three things: how smooth the grapefruit feels, whether the ginger shows, and how the ambroxan sits late in the day.

Start with the original. A 3ml decant gives about 60 sprays, enough to learn Tygar before you commit. A 10ml decant gives about 200 sprays and suits weeks of wear, and 30ml gives about 600 to keep.
