What does Lost Cherry smell like?

Lost Cherry is a 2018 Tom Ford Private Blend built as a dark, boozy cherry. It opens on black cherry and cherry liqueur with a bitter almond edge, so the first minutes read like a glass of kirsch with marzipan beside it. The heart turns to sour cherry and plum, softened by Turkish rose and jasmine sambac. The long base is where most of the character sits: vanilla, tonka bean, Peru balsam and benzoin for warmth, cinnamon and cloves for spice, then sandalwood, cedar, patchouli and vetiver to keep it from turning into dessert.

Best overall: Ambery Cherry

Ambery Cherry by Dossier lists cherry, almond and cinnamon up top, plum, cloves, rose and jasmine in the heart, and tonka, vanilla and Peru balsam in the base. Every one of those notes also appears in Lost Cherry's published pyramid, and none of them points somewhere else, which is why it earns the overall spot.

Lost Cherry closes on sandalwood, cedar, patchouli and vetiver; Ambery Cherry closes on balsam, tonka and vanilla, so the dry-down reads rounder and sweeter, with less of the original's dry grip. Who it suits: a first try at the style, or a bottle to wear freely on weekends while you decide whether the original is worth it. Treat it as a sweet cherry gourmand rather than a woody one.

Sweeter take: Not Another Cherry

Not Another Cherry by Fine'ry keeps the pairing most people remember from Lost Cherry: cherry and almond, with Turkish rose behind them. It adds amaretto, which pushes the almond from bitter towards sweet liqueur.

The main difference: the listing stops there. There is no balsam, no spice and no wood, so it never reaches Lost Cherry's darker base. It is a sweeter, simpler cherry-almond scent, and one Lost Cherry owner on the listing disputes the comparison altogether.

Who it suits: someone who finds the original too heavy or too woody and wants the sweet cherry part only, for daytime in the colder months.

Lovefest Burning Cherry by Kayali is not a budget clone but a perfume in its own right, and the most expensive bottle in the table. It shares a good part of Lost Cherry's list: cherry, rose, jasmine sambac, tonka, Peru balsam and vetiver.

The main difference: it adds raspberry, praline and palo santo. A Parfumo member finds the cherry similarly juicy but the whole perfume drier, smokier and less balsamic, and another member there finds it closer to Tom Ford's own Cherry Smoke than to Lost Cherry. The smoke is the point: it moves Lost Cherry's sweetness towards a campfire.

Who it suits: someone who wants a cherry perfume with its own identity rather than a stand-in, for autumn evenings.

Lost Cherry clones vs the original: the price per ml

The house's own bottle sits far above every clone listed, millilitre for millilitre. Starting with a 3ml decant of Lost Cherry lets you wear the real thing first.

What a 10ml decant of Lost Cherry buys you

The reason most people search for a Lost Cherry dupe is the price of a full bottle. A decant changes that sum. At 10ML, a 3ml decant of Lost Cherry costs € 21,96 (around 60 sprays), a 10ml decant € 73,71 (around 200 sprays) and a 30ml decant € 220,41 (around 600 sprays), each filled from the original bottle. That is € 7,37/ml at the 10ml size.

A clone bottle still costs less per ml; the dated prices are in the table above. But the gap is far smaller than the full-bottle price suggests, and a 10ml decant gives you the thing the clones only approach: the full spiced, woody base. If you wear a cherry scent a few times a month, 200 sprays of the real thing may last you longer than your interest in it. If you want to wear cherry every day, a clone bottle is the more sensible buy, and a 3ml of the original is still the best way to find out which clone you actually prefer.

What every clone gets wrong

Reading the note lists together shows a pattern. The clones compete on the opening, and nearly all of them get the cherry, liqueur and bitter almond right. The part they trim is the base, which in Lost Cherry is long and layered.

The cinnamon and cloves are the most common casualty. They are what makes Lost Cherry read as a spiced winter perfume rather than a cherry sweet, and only Ambery Cherry lists both. The second is the balance between sugar and wood: clones that keep the vanilla tend to lose the woods, and clones that keep the woods tend to lose the vanilla. The original holds both, which is why its dry-down feels dry and sweet at once.

How to test a dupe

Paper strips flatter a clone. A blotter shows the opening, and the opening is the part every clone gets right; the base only appears on skin, well into the day.

1. Start with the original. A 3ml decant of Lost Cherry gives you enough for several full days of wear, so you learn its base before you judge anything against it.
2. Wear the clone on a different day, one spray on the same spot, and check it in the morning, after lunch and in the evening. Skin, weather and heat all change how a perfume develops.
3. Compare the dry-down, not the first minutes. Ask whether the spice and wood are there by the afternoon.
