État Libre d'Orange is a French niche perfume house founded in Paris in 2006 by Etienne de Swardt, who named it after the Orange Free State in South Africa, the land of his birth. Its motto, "Le parfum est mort, vive le parfum", sums up a house known for daring compositions, provocative names and the cocarde emblem on its bottles. Its flagship boutique stands on a corner of the Haut Marais, at 69 rue des Archives. The originals of 2006 include Rien and Jasmin et Cigarette, followed by Fat Electrician in 2009, You Or Someone Like You, created in 2017 with the writer Chandler Burr, and I am Trash – Les Fleurs du Déchet, made in 2018 from upcycled ingredients.
