How the numbers are worked out
Every figure comes from the numbers you enter: price, bottle size, ml per spray, sprays per day and the years you would keep the bottle. There are no hidden prices and no one else’s prices are used.
- Price per ml
- price ÷ size in ml
- Sprays in the bottle
- size in ml ÷ ml per spray
- Price per spray
- price per ml × ml per spray
- Days it lasts
- sprays in the bottle ÷ sprays per day
- Cost per month / per year
- price per spray × sprays per day × 30.44 / 365.25
- Price per ml you really get
- price ÷ ml you use within your years, capped at the bottle size
Worked example
A 50 ml bottle at €89, 0.10 ml per spray, 4 sprays a day: €1.78 per ml, 500 sprays, €0.18 per spray, €0.71 a day, 4 months.
Sprays by bottle size
| Bottle | 0.07 ml | 0.10 ml | 0.14 ml |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 ml | 143 | 100 | 71 |
| 30 ml | 429 | 300 | 214 |
| 50 ml | 714 | 500 | 357 |
| 100 ml | 1,429 | 1,000 | 714 |
Sprays per bottle at the three common pump outputs, from fine mist to strong.
Measure your own spray
Weigh the bottle, press the pump 20 times, weigh it again. Grams lost ÷ 0.85 (the rough density of perfume) ÷ 20 = ml per spray. Enter the result as your own spray strength.
Assumptions and sources
Spray output. Fragrance pump makers list standard outputs of 70, 100 and 140 microlitres per spray, which is 0.07 to 0.14 ml. 0.10 ml is the usual middle and the calculator’s starting value; change it if you know your pump. Source: Silgan Dispensing, fragrance product guide (PDF).
Starting values. The calculator starts at 0.10 ml per spray, 4 sprays a day and 3 years. They are starting points, not facts about your bottle: change them to match how you wear it.
What it ignores. The small amount that stays below the dip tube, evaporation, shipping and tax. Real prices vary by country, so the calculator uses exactly the figure you type.
Perfume price calculator: questions
How many sprays are in a bottle of perfume?
At the usual 0.10 ml per spray, a 10 ml bottle gives about 100 sprays, 50 ml about 500 and 100 ml about 1,000. Pumps differ: standard fragrance pumps put out between 0.07 and 0.14 ml, so a 100 ml bottle holds roughly 710 to 1,430 sprays. Pick your spray strength in the calculator, or weigh your own bottle (see the method).
How do I work out the price per ml?
Divide the price by the size in millilitres: a 50 ml bottle at €89 comes to €1.78 per ml. If the bottle is labelled in fluid ounces, multiply by 29.57 first (1.7 fl oz is about 50 ml). The calculator does the conversion when you switch the unit to fl oz.
How long does a bottle of perfume last?
At 4 sprays a day and 0.10 ml per spray, 50 ml lasts about 4 months and 100 ml about 8 months. Wearing a bottle only a few days a week stretches that a lot: enter a lower number of sprays a day to see it.
Is the bigger bottle always the better value?
A bigger bottle almost always costs less per ml, but that only counts for the liquid you actually use. At one spray a day, 100 ml lasts about 2.7 years. Set how many years you realistically keep a bottle and the calculator shows the price per ml you really get.
Does it work for decants, samples and travel sprays?
Yes. Enter whatever you paid and the size in the bottle or vial, down to 2 ml. It is useful for comparing a small size with a full bottle before you commit to the larger one. The calculator runs in your browser, with no sign-up and no account.
