Serge Lutens is a French niche house, started in 2000 and named after its founder, a photographer, filmmaker and artistic director. Its perfumes are warm and a little shadowy. Amber, honey and incense recur, softened by iris and musk, with cedar and vetiver keeping things dry. Chergui is the place to begin: hay and honey over a smoky, sweet base. Ambre Sultan is amber at its most resinous. Féminité du Bois puts Atlas cedar at the centre and makes wood feel soft. Nearly everything here is unisex, so choose by mood rather than by label.
