How the numbers are worked out
Every figure comes from the numbers you enter: bottle size, ml per spray, sprays each time, days a week and the years you would keep the bottle. The price only adds what each wear costs. There are no hidden prices and no one else’s prices are used.
- Sprays in the bottle
- size in ml ÷ ml per spray
- Sprays per day
- sprays each time × days a week ÷ 7
- Days it lasts
- sprays in the bottle ÷ sprays per day
- Wears in the bottle
- sprays in the bottle ÷ sprays each time
- Price per wear
- price ÷ wears in the bottle
- Price per ml you really get
- price ÷ ml you use within your years, capped at the bottle size
Worked example
A 50 ml bottle at €89, 0.10 ml per spray, 3 sprays each time, 7 days a week: 500 sprays, 167 wears, €0.53 per wear, €1.78 per ml, and it lasts about 5 months.
Measure your own spray
Weigh the bottle, press the pump 20 times, weigh it again. Grams lost ÷ 0.85 (the rough density of perfume) ÷ 20 = ml per spray. Enter the result as your own spray strength.
Assumptions and sources
Spray output. Fragrance pump makers list standard outputs of 70, 100 and 140 microlitres per spray, which is 0.07 to 0.14 ml. 0.10 ml is the usual middle and the calculator’s starting value; change it if you know your pump. Source: Silgan Dispensing, fragrance product guide (PDF).
Starting values. The tool starts at 0.10 ml per spray, 3 sprays each time, 7 days a week and 3 years. They are starting points, not facts about your bottle: change them to match how you wear it.
What it ignores. The small amount that stays below the dip tube, evaporation, and weeks when you skip it or wear another perfume: it assumes the same pace from the first spray to the last. It also says nothing about how long a scent stays on your skin. Real prices vary by country, so the tool uses exactly the figure you type.
How long a bottle of perfume lasts: questions
How long does a bottle of perfume last?
At 3 sprays each time, worn 7 days a week, with 0.10 ml per spray, a 50 ml bottle lasts about 5 months and a 100 ml bottle about 11 months. Wear it fewer days and the same bottle lasts much longer: at 3 days a week, a 100 ml bottle lasts about 2.1 years.
How many sprays are in a bottle of perfume?
At the usual 0.10 ml per spray, a 10 ml bottle gives about 100 sprays, 50 ml about 500 and 100 ml about 1,000. Pumps differ: standard fragrance pumps put out between 0.07 and 0.14 ml, so a 100 ml bottle holds roughly 710 to 1,430 sprays. Pick your spray strength under More options, or weigh your own bottle (see the method).
How many times can I wear a bottle of perfume?
At 3 sprays each time, a 50 ml bottle gives about 167 wears and a 100 ml bottle about 333. With 4 sprays each time the same 100 ml bottle gives about 250 wears.
Is this how long the scent stays on my skin?
No. This tool shows how long the liquid in the bottle lasts. How long a scent stays on your skin depends on the perfume, your skin and the weather, and a calculator cannot work it out from the bottle.
Does it work for decants, samples and travel sprays?
Yes. Enter what you paid and the size of the vial, down to 2 ml. A 2 ml vial holds about 20 sprays, which is about 7 wears at 3 sprays each time. It is a quick way to see how many wears a small size gives before you commit to a full bottle.
