Best overall: Amber Oud Tobacco Edition

Amber Oud Tobacco Edition by Al Haramain is the clone Fragrantica forum members bring up first. In a thread asking for the best Tobacco Vanille clone, it is the name that comes up most often, one member calls it the closest, and Fragrantica's own article on the launch describes the same theme and main notes as the Tom Ford, with different nuances. Tobacco leaf, vanilla, tonka, cacao, dried fruits and woods all feature.

The main difference is clove. Members describe it as heavier on clove and cinnamon, with darker dried fruit, and one warns in a second thread that it has much less vanilla than the original. The result is drier and spicier. Despite the name, the writer of that Fragrantica article smells no oud in it.

It suits someone who likes the tobacco and spice more than the dessert side of Tobacco Vanille. Forum members describe it as loud and long lasting, so start with one spray. Like the original, it belongs to cold evenings. Basis: named sources, the Fragrantica threads and article linked above.

Closest on the dry-down: Vanille en Tobacco

Vanille en Tobacco by Fragrance World follows the same outline: tobacco leaf, then vanilla, cocoa and tonka, then dried fruits and woods. Its closeness shows late. On its Fragrantica page, a member who owns the Tobacco Vanille body spray and Eternal Touch finds it very close to the original once it has dried down.

The main difference is richness. The same member finds it less rich than Tobacco Vanille, and less spicy than Eternal Touch. It is also the thinnest evidence of the top three: one detailed owner comparison rather than a chorus. Treat it as a strong lead to try, not a settled verdict.

Lowest price: Eternal Touch

Eternal Touch by Maison Alhambra, sold earlier as Tobacco Touch, lists spices and tobacco on top, tonka, vanilla, cocoa and tobacco flower in the heart, and dried fruits and woods in the base. On paper it follows Tobacco Vanille stage by stage, and its Parfumo page lists Tobacco Vanille as the one perfume it resembles.

The main difference is the opening. Parfumo members describe a boozy start heavy on cinnamon and clove, closer to a spiced cake, before it fades into tobacco and vanilla. A member in the Fragrantica clone thread finds the tobacco less prominent and the vanilla spicier than the original, and says it does not perform as well as the Al Haramain. One Parfumo member rates its projection as weak.

Darker take: Charuto

Charuto by Pendora Scents, sold under the longer name Charuto Tobacco Vanille, lists tobacco leaf and spices, then tonka, tobacco flower, vanilla and cocoa, then dried fruit and woods. On its Fragrantica page, members place it between Tobacco Vanille and Amber Oud Tobacco Edition: sweeter than the Al Haramain, spicier and drier than the Tom Ford.

The main difference is that drier, darker tobacco. Not everyone agrees on how close it is: one member on the same page finds it unlike the Tom Ford altogether. It was also listed as out of stock by its maker on the day prices were checked, so the table shows no price for it, and one Fragrantica member says it has been discontinued. Check before you plan around it.

Sweeter take: Powdery Tobacco

Powdery Tobacco by Dossier lists ginger, tobacco and apricot on top, vanilla, honey and cocoa in the heart, and blond woods, tonka and dried fruits in the base. Its Parfumo page lists Tobacco Vanille first among similar perfumes.

The main difference is sugar and fruit. Ginger, apricot and honey are not in the Tom Ford, and one Parfumo member finds it much sweeter than Tobacco Vanille. Another finds it more powdery, with not enough tobacco. On Fragrantica, opinion is split between very close and too much ginger and honey.

It suits someone who loves the vanilla and cocoa side and wants a softer, more gourmand version for cooler days. It comes in a 50ml bottle, the smallest in the table. Basis: named sources, the Parfumo and Fragrantica listings linked above.

Premium alternative: Sweet Smoke

Sweet Smoke by Alexandria Fragrances is the dearest clone in the table. Its Fragrantica page lists tobacco on top, vanilla, coffee, tonka bean and tobacco blossom in the heart, and dried fruits and wood resin in the base: the Tom Ford outline with coffee added.

The main difference is spice. Members there who wore it on one arm and Tobacco Vanille on the other describe a burst of cinnamon and clove in the first minutes, notes neither pyramid lists, before the two draw close in the dry-down. Others find it spicier with the vanilla turned down, or lighter and less creamy than the original. A member of the Fragrantica clone thread passes on the common view that it is more angular and less smooth.

What every clone gets wrong

The pattern across the six is easy to spot. Tobacco Vanille balances three things: dry tobacco leaf, creamy vanilla and cacao, and a fruity, woody base. The clones tend to tip the balance one way. The Al Haramain and Charuto push the spice, clove above all, and thin the vanilla. Powdery Tobacco and Eternal Touch push the sweetness, with honey, ginger or a boozy cinnamon opening, and Sweet Smoke leads with cinnamon and clove. Vanille en Tobacco comes closest in the dry-down but is less rich on the way there.

The second gap is texture. Members who compare clones with the original keep describing them as rougher or thinner in the vanilla, which no note list can show. That is the part to judge on your own skin.

Is a clone cheaper than wearing the original?

Per bottle, yes. The clones with an in-stock price in the table above sell in 50ml to 100ml bottles, and even the dearest, Sweet Smoke, costs less than a full bottle of the original. The honest comparison, though, is not bottle against bottle. It is what you need in order to decide.

At 10ML, Tobacco Vanille is filled from the Tom Ford bottle into three sizes. The 3ml costs € 18,18 and gives around 60 sprays: a week or so of wear. The 10ml decant costs € 50,40, or € 5,04/ml, for around 200 sprays, which covers weeks of daily wear. Maybe it is the tobacco-and-vanilla idea you love rather than this one perfume. These four originals, all stocked at 10ML, take it in different directions.

Red Tobacco by Mancera leads with cinnamon, nutmeg, saffron and incense, lifted by green apple and white pear, and lands on tobacco, Madagascar vanilla, amber and sandalwood. Spicier and fruitier.

Opus XIV Royal Tobacco by Amouage sets tobacco with licorice and lavender over Bourbon vanilla, benzoin, Peru balsam and tonka bean. Darker, more resinous.

Tobacco Sapphire by Boadicea The Victorious begins with cumin, coriander and saffron and ends on tobacco, vanilla, benzoin and labdanum. The most savoury.

How to test a dupe

Paper tells you little here. Tobacco Vanille clones differ most in their first hour, and a blotter never gets past it. Put one spray on your wrist and let it run for several hours, smelling it early, again after an hour and once more at night.

Keep the original and the clone to separate days. Two scents on two arms blur into each other, and you end up comparing the mix. Each time you check, ask three questions: where is the vanilla, how dry is the tobacco, and how much spice sits on top. If a clone smells of spice where you expected cacao, that is the gap.
