How we source and decant every perfume

Quick answer

Of 7 clones, the best Acqua di Giò dupe overall is 360° Red for Men by Perry Ellis, with 194 of 221 Parfumo users finding it similar. Lisboa by Zara is closest on a smaller vote line, 68 of 83, and Aqua by La Rive is the lowest priced of the three with a price. 10ML sells Acqua di Giò as a 3ml decant at €6.21 and 10ml at €18.81.

You can try the original, Acqua di Giò, at 10ML as a 10 ml decant from €18.81, before you choose a dupe.

Acqua di Giò by Giorgio Armani next to a 10ML decant, with lemon, violet and cedarwood, its key notes

What does Acqua di Giò smell like?

Bottle of Acqua di Giò by Giorgio Armani
The originalAcqua di GiòGiorgio Armani

Acqua di Giò is a men's perfume by Giorgio Armani, launched in 1996 and composed by Alberto Morillas, Annick Menardo and Christian Dussoulier. The catalogue lists lime, lemon, bergamot, jasmine, orange, mandarin orange and neroli on top. The heart lists sea notes, calone, rosemary, peach, freesia, violet, cyclamen, coriander, rose, nutmeg, mignonette and hyacinth. The base lists white musk, cedar, oakmoss, patchouli and amber. That is a long list, so a clone can match a slice of it and still miss the rest.

The other Acqua di Giò versions

10ML also stocks three more Acqua di Giò perfumes from Armani. Acqua di Giò Profondo is an Eau de Parfum from 2020, with sea notes, aquozone, bergamot and green mandarin on top, cypress, rosemary, lavender and mastic in the heart, and mineral notes, musk, patchouli and amber at the base. Acqua di Giò Parfum from 2023 lists marine notes and bergamot, then rosemary, clary sage and geranium, then olibanum and patchouli. Acqua di Giò Profondo Parfum from 2024 lists bergamot, green mandarin and sea notes, then amber, cypress, lavender and rosemary, then incense, musk and patchouli. The clone evidence below is about the 1996 original only. Our Giorgio Armani perfumes guide helps you choose between the versions.

Wear Acqua di Giò first: 3ml or 10ml

If you came to wear the original, start here. A 3ml decant of Acqua di Giò is €6.21, about 60 sprays, which works out at €2.07/ml. A 10ml decant is €18.81, about 200 sprays, at €1.88/ml.

A bottle holds far more perfume than a decant, so compare per ml: on that measure the decant costs more than any of the three priced clone bottles in the table. What it buys you is a few days in the original before you spend on a bottle. Wear it first, then judge each clone against what you actually smelled.

Best overall: 360° Red for Men

Perry Ellis

Basis of comparison
Named source

360° Red for Men by Perry Ellis has the largest vote base of the seven. Its list shares lime, bergamot, mandarin orange, orange, coriander, nutmeg, oakmoss and patchouli with the original, which covers a citrus opening and a mossy, woody base.

The main difference is the spice and herbs. It lists cinnamon and clove next to the nutmeg, lavender and parsley in the heart, and sandalwood and vetiver at the base. It does not list the original's sea notes or calone.

It suits you if you like the citrus and moss structure and want spices added. Choose it when cinnamon and clove on the list sound better to you than sea notes.

Our basis is the source vote: Parfumo's comparison page shows 194 of 221 users finding the original and 360° Red for Men similar. Parfumo dates 360° Red for Men to 2003.

Closest on the dry-down: Lisboa

Zara

Bottle price
No EU price
Basis of comparison
Named source

Lisboa by Zara lists lemon, musk, jasmine, orange and green notes. Lemon, jasmine and orange are also on the original's list.

The main difference is length. Parfumo prints a short list for Lisboa, so it names no bergamot, no sea notes and nothing beyond those five entries. Its vote line is smaller than 360° Red for Men's (83 voters against 221) and its share is lower, so read the closest role as a pick from the vote line, not as a win over the overall leader and not as anything a note list can show.

It suits you if you want the clone we place closest and you are happy to read the rest of it on your own skin. Choose it when the original, worn first as a decant, is your reference.

The basis is the source vote: Parfumo's comparison page shows 68 of 83 users finding the original and Lisboa similar.

Lowest price: Aqua

La Rive

Bottle price
€7.49 · 90 ml
Basis of comparison
Named source

Aqua by La Rive lists bergamot on top, jasmine and aquatic notes in the heart, and cedarwood at the base. Bergamot and jasmine are on the original's list too.

The main difference is how short the list is. Where the original lists sea notes and calone, Aqua lists aquatic notes, and it names no lime, lemon, musk or oakmoss. The table above shows its dated bottle price, the lowest of the three clones that have one.

It suits you if the price matters most and a short list of bergamot, jasmine and aquatic notes is enough for you. Choose it when you want the lowest outlay of the three priced clone bottles.

The basis is the source vote: Parfumo's comparison page shows 41 of 54 users finding the original and Aqua similar.

Karl Lagerfeld

Karl New York Mercer Street by Karl Lagerfeld lists rhubarb, basil, white pepper and citrus notes on top, aromatic notes and blossoms in the heart, and cotton and musky notes at the base. Citrus notes on top and musky notes at the base are also on the original's list.

The main difference is the rhubarb, basil and white pepper on top, and the cotton at the base. None of those appear on the original's list.

It suits you if you want rhubarb, basil and white pepper up front over cotton and musky notes. The fresher label rests on those listed notes, not on a wear report.

The basis is the source vote, and the sample is small: Parfumo's comparison page shows 15 of 19 users finding the original and Karl New York Mercer Street similar. Parfumo dates it to 2020.

Basic Instinct by Van Gils lists blackcurrant, melon, pineapple, lavender and nutmeg on top, jasmine, violet and orange blossom in the heart, and amber, oakmoss, patchouli and vetiver at the base. It shares nutmeg, jasmine, violet, amber, oakmoss and patchouli with the original.

The main difference is the fruit. Blackcurrant, melon and pineapple sit on top where the original lists lime, lemon and bergamot, and Basic Instinct lists no citrus at all.

It suits you if you like the original's moss and patchouli base and want fruit up front. Choose it when blackcurrant and pineapple appeal more than lime and lemon. The sweeter label rests on the listed fruit notes.

The basis is the source vote, and the sample is small: Parfumo's comparison page shows 14 of 16 users finding the original and Basic Instinct similar. Parfumo dates it to 2002.

Armaf

Blue Homme by Armaf lists lime, bergamot, lemon, mandarin orange and neroli on top, jasmine, lavender and rosemary in the heart, and amber, cedar, oakmoss and vanilla at the base. All five of those top notes are on the original's list, and so are jasmine, rosemary, cedar, oakmoss and amber.

The main difference is two additions: lavender in the heart and vanilla at the base. It lists no sea notes or calone.

It suits you if you want the original's citrus and moss outline with lavender and vanilla added. Choose it when those two notes sound welcome. The softer label comes from the vanilla on the list, not from a promise about projection.

The basis is the source vote: Parfumo's comparison page shows 24 of 30 users finding the original and Blue Homme similar. Parfumo dates it to 2013.

Franck Olivier

Blue Touch by Franck Olivier lists bergamot, lemon, mandarin orange and red fruits on top, patchouli, galbanum, melon, sage, vetiver and white woods in the heart, and musk, amber and moss at the base. Bergamot, lemon, mandarin orange, patchouli, musk and amber are on the original's list as well.

The main difference is the heart. Galbanum, sage, vetiver, white woods and melon fill it, with red fruits on top, and none of them are on the original's list.

It suits you if you want a woodier, greener heart under a bergamot, lemon and mandarin orange top. The darker label rests on those listed notes.

The basis is the source vote: Parfumo's comparison page shows 18 of 23 users finding the original and Blue Touch similar. Parfumo dates it to 2011.

What every clone gets wrong

Six of the seven clones keep part of the original's citrus, Basic Instinct lists none, and each drifts in its own direction. 360° Red for Men adds spice, Basic Instinct adds fruit, Blue Touch adds galbanum and sage, and Blue Homme adds lavender and vanilla. Aqua and Lisboa, with the shortest lists, leave the most unsaid.

A vote line measures similarity between two perfumes, not how a perfume sits on you. It cannot show how the sea notes and calone read against the citrus, or what is left late in the day.

Clone bottle or a decant of the original?

A clone bottle and a decant solve different problems. Buy a bottle once you know the perfume is yours. Start with a decant while you are still learning what the original does on your skin.

The 10ml decant of Acqua di Giò works out at €1.88/ml. Set that beside the per-ml range in the page's table, which covers only three clones: Aqua in a 90ml bottle, Karl New York Mercer Street in 100ml and Basic Instinct in 75ml. 360° Red for Men, Lisboa, Blue Homme and Blue Touch are listed without an EU price.

Why does size change the sum? The perfume price per ml index shows it. The decant vs full bottle guide sets out when each format fits, and what a perfume decant is answers the basics.

Similar originals 10ML sells

Three originals we stock share notes with it. They stand outside the clone ranking above.

  • L'Eau d'Issey Pour Homme by Issey Miyake, from 1994, lists lemon, bergamot, mandarin orange, calone, coriander, nutmeg, cedar and amber among its notes.
  • CK One by Calvin Klein, a 1994 unisex perfume, lists lemon, bergamot, mandarin orange, jasmine, violet, rose, freesia, cedar, oakmoss and amber.
  • Erolfa by Creed, from 1992, lists lime, bergamot, lemon, violet, jasmine, cyclamen, oakmoss and cedar.

The bergamot and lemon note pages show more perfumes built around citrus. For more men's picks, see our perfume dupes for men guide.

How to test a dupe

Judge on your wrist, not on a paper strip. Paper catches the opening lime and bergamot, but the sea notes and musk only show once they meet your skin.

Wear the original one day and a clone the next, on the same spot and with the same number of sprays. Let each one settle before you decide anything about the base. Note the citrus first, then the heart, then the moss and musk below.

Write it down instead of trusting memory. Did 360° Red for Men's cinnamon and clove take over? Did Blue Touch's galbanum change the mood you expected? With Basic Instinct, ask whether the fruit crowds out the citrus.

Keep a 3ml or 10ml decant of the original as your reference, and repeat the comparison on a few different days before a clone bottle earns shelf space. Our Armani Code dupes guide applies the same routine to another Armani perfume.

Clone or original? What to know first

Can I wear Acqua di Giò in 3ml or 10ml before choosing a clone?
Yes. A 3ml decant of Acqua di Giò costs €6.21 and gives about 60 sprays, while a 10ml decant costs €18.81 and gives about 200. Wear the original on several days before deciding whether a clone bottle suits you.
Which clone leads the Acqua di Giò ranking, and why?
360° Red for Men by Perry Ellis leads. On Parfumo's comparison page, 194 of 221 users find it similar to the original, the largest vote base in the list. It shares lime, bergamot, mandarin orange and oakmoss with the original, but adds cinnamon, clove, lavender and parsley.
How close does Lisboa get to Acqua di Giò?
On Parfumo's comparison page, 68 of 83 users find the two similar, a smaller vote line and a lower share than 360° Red for Men's. Lisboa lists only lemon, musk, jasmine, orange and green notes, so it keeps lemon, jasmine and orange and names little else. Wear the original first and judge Lisboa against it on your own skin.
Are Acqua di Giò dupes based on the 1996 original or the newer versions?
The clone evidence here is about the 1996 Acqua di Giò only. Profondo, Parfum and Profondo Parfum are separate Armani perfumes with their own notes, and a 3ml decant lets you compare any of them with the original.
How does an Acqua di Giò decant compare per ml with a clone bottle?
The 10ml decant works out at €1.88/ml. Compare that with the per-ml range in the table, which covers three priced clones; a bottle holds far more perfume, so per ml is the fair measure. As a first trial, a 3ml decant is €6.21.
Which clones share the original's lime, bergamot and mandarin orange?
360° Red for Men and Blue Homme list lime, bergamot and mandarin orange. Blue Touch lists bergamot and mandarin orange but no lime. Aqua lists bergamot only, and Lisboa lists neither lime nor bergamot.
Which Acqua di Giò clone costs the least?
Among the three clones with an EU shelf price in the page's table, Aqua by La Rive has the lowest bottle price and the lowest price per ml. We found no EU price for the other four, so we cannot rank them on cost.
Does 10ML sell dupes?
No. 10ML sells only original perfumes. We buy our bottles from authorized EU distributors and directly from the brands, and 10ML decants every perfume itself. The dupes in this guide are other houses’ perfumes, and we don’t sell them. You can wear the original first from €6.21.
