What does Armani Sì smell like?

Sì by Giorgio Armani opens on cassis. The heart pairs May rose with freesia. The base is vanilla, patchouli, woody notes and ambroxan. Its listed accords are woody, vanilla, aromatic and soft spicy, followed by fruity, green, floral, patchouli, rose and earthy. That puts vanilla and woods under a fruity opening. One caution applies to every clone below: Parfumo's current listing shows a reworked pyramid, and some Fragrantica members report a reformulation, so the notes you smell can vary by batch. Wear the original first, and you know exactly what you are comparing against.

The Sì versions: Passione and Eau de Parfum Intense

Best overall: Kiage 183

Kiage 183 by Kiage is the pick you can buy in euros today, and its case rests on Kiage's own statements. Kiage's page presents it as its alternative inspired by Giorgio Armani's Sì and lists blackcurrant; rose and freesia; vanilla, patchouli and ambroxan. Fragrantica lists Sì as cassis; May rose and freesia; vanilla, patchouli, woody notes and ambroxan. So the clone's list matches the notes of Sì's own pyramid.

The main difference from the original sits in that list: Kiage's page does not name woody notes. We found no member comparison for this one, so the basis is the house's description and a matching note list, not a verdict on how it wears. It suits you if you want Sì's pyramid on paper in a bottle you can order in euros, and you are comfortable relying on Kiage's own description.

Closest on the dry-down: In Woman

In Woman by La Rive has the strongest independent support of the six. Parfumo's comparison page shows 244 of 249 voting members finding it similar to Sì Eau de Parfum. Fragrantica lists it with black currant leaf; Rose de Mai and freesia; vanilla, patchouli, woody notes and ambroxan, the structure of Sì's own pyramid.

The main difference from the original comes from a Fragrantica forum thread. One member names it the best Sì alternative they know. Another finds it very similar, with more vanilla and a little less green. It suits you if you want the best-supported match and can track down a bottle: we found no EU list price for it, which is why it is not the overall pick.

Lowest price: Woody Freesia

Woody Freesia by Dossier has the lowest price here, and its list goes beyond Sì's. Dossier's own page says it is inspired by Giorgio Armani's Sì and lists freesia, blackcurrant and strawberry; rose, jasmine and peach; patchouli, vanilla, blond woods and musk. Fragrantica lists the same pyramid and classes it floral fruity.

The main difference from the original is on the list: strawberry and peach are notes Sì's pyramid does not list, and the base has blond woods and musk where Sì has woody notes and ambroxan. Fragrantica shows no comparison votes for it, so the evidence is thinner than for In Woman. It suits you if price leads and you like the idea of Sì with a fruit-heavier list.

Darker take: Always Red

Always Red by Elizabeth Arden is the darker take, and the sources disagree about it. Fragrantica members who know both find it very similar to Sì, one especially in the dry-down. Others find it a bit sharper or darker, or darker and richer, than the smoother Sì. Parfumo's comparison page shows 10 of 13 voting members finding it similar to Sì Eau de Parfum.

In a Fragrantica forum thread, a member who owns Always Red and In Woman finds both very, very similar to Sì. Another member elsewhere finds Always Red a lot sweeter and not similar. The main difference from the original is therefore weight: a darker, richer feel according to several members, with one dissent on sweetness. It suits you if Sì feels too smooth. We found no EU list price, and a Parfumo member says it was discontinued in favour of Always Red Femme, so treat it as one to take if you find a bottle.

Sweeter take: Varenna

Varenna by FIORE is ranked on its note list alone. FIORE's own page calls Varenna its scent twin of Armani Sì, describes juicy blackcurrant, creamy vanilla and warm amber, and files it under gourmand. It names none of the rose, freesia, patchouli and woody notes in Sì's pyramid.

Going by the lists, the main difference from the original is what is missing and what is added: Sì's rose, freesia, patchouli and woody notes are not named, while amber and a gourmand filing are. We cannot say how it smells or wears from a list. It suits you if blackcurrant and vanilla are the parts of Sì you reach for, and you accept that the page is the only source.

Fresher take: Yes

Yes by The Fragrance World is also ranked on its note list. The house's own page says Yes is inspired by Giorgio Armani Sì, lists blackcurrant and mandarin; rose and freesia; vanilla, patchouli and musk, and suggests it for spring and summer daytime. Sì's Fragrantica pyramid opens on cassis alone, with no citrus note.

So the main difference from the original, on paper, is mandarin at the top, and a base of vanilla, patchouli and musk where Sì has woody notes and ambroxan. It suits you if you want a Sì-style list pitched at daytime by its house. We found no EU list price for it, and the page is the only source.

What every clone gets wrong

Not one of these lists reproduces all of Sì. Only In Woman's list follows its structure from top to base, according to Fragrantica. Kiage 183 leaves woody notes off. Woody Freesia swaps ambroxan for blond woods and musk and adds strawberry and peach. Varenna and Yes drop the woody notes and ambroxan from what they name.

Ambroxan is a note that half of these lists lose, so it is worth reading our guide on ambergris vs ambroxan before you judge a base. A note list also shows what is in a pyramid, not how much of each. Sì itself changes by batch, so even the original is a moving target.

How to test an Armani Sì clone against the original

Test on skin, not on paper. Sì rests on a vanilla, patchouli and ambroxan base, and a paper strip cannot show how that base settles on you.

Wear Sì on one day and a clone on another, at the same time of day, and judge late in the day, once it has settled. One Fragrantica member who knows both finds Always Red very similar to Sì especially in the dry-down, so that is where to look. Then check each clone against the one thing its list changes:

• Kiage 183: look for the woody notes its list leaves off.
• In Woman: ask how much vanilla it carries, since one forum member finds more vanilla and a little less green.
• Woody Freesia: see whether strawberry and peach show up.
• Varenna: notice whether you miss the rose and freesia.
• Yes: watch for the mandarin on the way in.
