What does Bal d'Afrique smell like?

Bottle of Bal d'Afrique by Byredo
The originalBal d'AfriqueByredo

Bal d'Afrique is a unisex Eau de Parfum from the house of Byredo, launched in 2009 and created by Jérôme Epinette. The top notes are African marigold, bergamot, lemon, neroli and buchu. Cyclamen, violet and jasmine sit in the heart, over cedarwood, vetiver, black amber and musk. Its listed accords are woody, aromatic, earthy, violet, floral, powdery, fresh and green.

That gives a clone a lot to match: a citrus and marigold opening, a violet and jasmine heart, and a woody, vetiver and musky base. Every pick below measures a clone against that list. A clone that drops a note, or adds one, shows it on paper. Our guide to the best perfumes from the house covers the rest of the range.

Wear Bal d'Afrique first: 3ml and 10ml

Before you buy any clone bottle, you can live with the original for a while. The 3ml decant costs €13.77, works out at €4.59/ml and gives about 60 sprays. The larger 10ml decant is €37.35, or €3.74/ml, with about 200 sprays to wear for weeks. A 30ml size exists too.

The priced bottle sizes below are 100ml for Vibrant Vetiver Delight, B'Afric and Contralto, and 50ml for White Forest. The B'Afric bottle costs less than the 10ml decant of the original and the Vibrant Vetiver Delight bottle sits close to it, while the White Forest and Contralto bottles cost more than three times as much. Per ml, every priced clone sits below the decant, so compare the price per ml in the table, not the shelf price alone. If a decant is new to you, start with what a decant is and decant versus full bottle. The price per ml index lines up other perfumes the same way.

Best overall: Vibrant Vetiver Delight

Emir

Bottle price
€34.90 · 100 ml
Basis of comparison
Named source

Vibrant Vetiver Delight by Emir leads because it pairs a large vote base with a high share, and it has the note list nearest the original's in this guide. Parfumo's comparison page shows 132 of 146 users finding the two similar, and Parfumo dates it 2021.

On Parfumo it lists bergamot, blackcurrant, Amalfi lemon, tagetes and African orange blossom on top, cyclamen, jasmine and violet in the heart, and musk, vetiver, amber and Virginia cedar at the base. It shares the bergamot, lemon, cyclamen, jasmine, violet, vetiver, musk and cedar with the original. Against the catalogue list the main difference is on top: it adds blackcurrant and orange blossom, and neroli and buchu are not on its list.

It suits you if you want a list that keeps the original's heart and base almost whole. Choose it when a blackcurrant top note appeals to you and you want the pick with the broadest vote support.

Closest on the dry-down: Savanna Heat

House of Thêom

Basis of comparison
Named source

Savanna Heat by House of Thêom takes the closest role on a vote line, the highest share in this guide. Parfumo's comparison page shows 69 of 76 users finding the two similar, and Parfumo dates it 2026. The sample is smaller than for Vibrant Vetiver Delight, so read it as a vote line, not a verdict.

It lists bergamot, blackcurrant and tonka bean on top, violet, vetiver and davana in the heart, and musk, cedarwood and amber at the base. That shares the bergamot, violet, vetiver, musk and cedarwood with the original. The main difference is the list's shape: it adds blackcurrant, tonka bean and davana, and it names no marigold, lemon, neroli, buchu, cyclamen or jasmine.

It suits you if the base is what you want to match: musk, cedarwood and amber are listed at the base, with vetiver in the heart. Savanna Heat is currently sold out at the house, so the table leaves its price empty.

Lowest price: B'Afric

Flavia

Bottle price
€25.60 · 100 ml
Basis of comparison
Named source

B'Afric by Flavia has the lowest price per ml in the table. Parfumo's comparison page shows 54 of 69 users finding the two similar.

It lists bergamot, lemon and currant on top, cyclamen, jasmine and violet in the heart, and musk, vetiver and amber at the base. Its heart names the same three notes as the original's. The main difference is a shorter list: it names no marigold, neroli or buchu, and no cedarwood at the base, and it adds currant.

It suits you if cost per ml decides for you and you still want a citrus top, the violet and jasmine heart and a vetiver and musk base on paper. Pick it if you will settle the remaining questions by wearing it.

Sweeter take: Al Rayhan

Attar Collection

Basis of comparison
Named source

Al Rayhan by Attar Collection rests on its listed notes for the sweeter label. Parfumo's comparison page shows 149 of 180 users finding the two similar, the largest vote base in this guide alongside Contralto, and Parfumo dates it 2017.

It lists mango, citrus zest, white blossoms and sweet notes on top, jasmine, violet, tangerine, white rose and praliné in the heart, and lokum, exotic fruits, white musk and powder at the base. It shares jasmine and violet with the original. The main difference is the direction: its list is fruit and sweets, and it names no cedarwood or vetiver.

It suits you if you want the violet and jasmine heart with a fruit-and-sweets list around it, not woods. No EU shelf price was available for it, so its table cell stays empty.

Fresher take: White Forest

Björk & Berries

Bottle price
€140.00 · 50 ml
Basis of comparison

White Forest by Björk & Berries is the fresher pick on its note list. Parfumo's comparison page shows 88 of 104 users finding the two similar, and Parfumo dates it 2016.

It lists bergamot, blackcurrant and lemon on top, violet and lily of the valley in the heart, and vetiver, cedarwood and tonka bean at the base. It shares the bergamot, lemon, violet, vetiver and cedarwood with the original. The main difference is what is missing: no marigold, buchu, jasmine or musk is listed, and it adds blackcurrant, lily of the valley and tonka bean.

It suits you if you want a lighter list built on citrus, violet and woods. The bottle is 50ml, so use the price per ml when you compare it with the others.

Premium alternative: Contralto

Sospiro

Bottle price
€243.00 · 100 ml
Basis of comparison
Named source

Contralto by Sospiro has a large vote base: Parfumo's comparison page shows 162 of 180 users finding the two similar, and Parfumo dates it 2022. Its listed notes tell a different story.

It lists orange blossom, clove and pink pepper on top, juniper, chestnut and gaiac wood in the heart, and cashmeran, Peru balsam and vanilla at the base. None of those notes appears on the original's list. So the vote line and the listing disagree, and we leave you to judge which to trust.

It suits you if the vote count persuades you more than the notes do and you are willing to pay for the premium bottle. If the original's marigold, violet and vetiver are what you want, the notes point elsewhere.

What every clone gets wrong

Everything above rests on note lists and vote counts, which cannot show how a perfume wears. A clone may share most of the original's listed notes and still behave differently on skin. None of the six names African marigold and buchu together as the original does, and Parfumo's own list for the original differs from the catalogue's (it also names blackcurrant and tonka bean, which the differences above treat as additions), so a vote line is one member group's opinion, not a measurement.

How to test a dupe

Test on skin, not a paper strip: a woody, violet scent like this one shifts with your own warmth. Wear Bal d'Afrique on one day and a single clone on each later day, so nothing mixes on your wrist.

Start with a 3ml decant of the original and keep it for the comparison. Check what each clone keeps: the violet and jasmine heart, the vetiver and cedarwood base and the musk. Then note what it changes, such as the blackcurrant in Vibrant Vetiver Delight, the tonka bean in Savanna Heat or the sweets in Al Rayhan. Judge them late in the day, once each has settled.

Similar originals we stock

If you would rather stay with originals, three perfumes in our catalogue share part of the Bal d'Afrique list. Jump Up And Kiss Me Hedonistic by Clive Christian lists bergamot, neroli, lemon, jasmine, musk and vetiver among many notes. CK One by Calvin Klein lists lemon, bergamot, jasmine, violet and musk. Elysium Pour Femme by Roja Dove lists bergamot, jasmine, cyclamen, violet, musk and cedarwood. Each comes as a 3ml, 10ml or 30ml decant.

Clone or original? What to know first

Can I wear Byredo Bal d'Afrique in 3ml or 10ml before choosing a clone?
Yes. A 3ml decant of the original costs €13.77 and gives about 60 sprays, while a 10ml decant costs €37.35 and gives about 200. Wear it on a few different days before you decide whether a clone bottle suits you.
Which Bal d'Afrique dupe leads this guide, and why?
Vibrant Vetiver Delight by Emir leads: 132 of 146 users on Parfumo's comparison page find it similar to the original. Its Parfumo list also keeps the original's cyclamen, jasmine and violet heart, with vetiver, musk and cedar at the base, and adds blackcurrant and orange blossom on top.
How close does Savanna Heat get to Bal d'Afrique?
Savanna Heat has the highest share in this guide on a smaller vote line: 69 of 76 voters on Parfumo's comparison page. Its list keeps bergamot, violet, vetiver, musk and cedarwood and adds blackcurrant, tonka bean and davana. That is a notes and vote comparison, not a claim about how it wears. It is currently sold out at the house.
How does a Bal d'Afrique decant compare per ml with a clone bottle?
The 3ml decant of the original works out at €4.59/ml and the 10ml decant comes to €3.74/ml. The priced clone bottles are 100ml and 50ml, and the table gives their price per ml, so compare those figures. Per ml, every priced clone bottle sits below both decant sizes.
Which Bal d'Afrique clones list the same notes as the original?
B'Afric lists the same cyclamen, jasmine and violet heart as the original, with bergamot, lemon, vetiver and musk around it. Vibrant Vetiver Delight shares the same heart and adds blackcurrant and orange blossom. None of the six lists African marigold and buchu together.
Does the vote line on Contralto match its notes?
No. Contralto's vote line is 162 of 180 on Parfumo, but its listed notes are clove, chestnut, gaiac wood, Peru balsam and vanilla among others, and none appears on the original's list. The vote line and the listing disagree, so wear the original in 3ml first and judge for yourself.
Is there a cheaper Bal d'Afrique dupe than the decant?
Per ml, every priced clone in this guide is below the decant of the original, with B'Afric lowest. The bottles are larger, though, so the shelf price of White Forest and Contralto is above the 10ml decant. Check the price per ml in the table before comparing.
Does 10ML sell dupes?
No. 10ML sells only original perfumes. We buy our bottles from authorized EU distributors and directly from the brands, and 10ML decants every perfume itself. The dupes in this guide are other houses’ perfumes, and we don’t sell them. You can wear the original first from €13.77.
