Where to spray perfume, and how many sprays to use

Warm skin at the throat, neck, chest and inner wrists, then fewer sprays than you think. Where to put perfume, how many sprays suit its strength and the day ahead, and what that means for each size.

In this guide11

Where to spray perfume matters less than the rituals suggest: aim for warm skin at the base of the throat, the sides of the neck, the chest and the inner wrists, hold the bottle a hand's width away, and let it dry. The real question is how many sprays, and that depends on two things you can judge before you leave the house: how strong the perfume is, and where you are going. A dense evening scent in a small room wants one spray; a bright citrus scent on a summer walk can take four. Below are the places that work, a simple way to count, eight perfumes worked through by occasion, and what your count means for a 3ml, 10ml or 30ml bottle.

The best places to spray perfume

Perfume needs warmth to open up. Spots where the skin runs warm, or stays covered, give the scent a steady lift through the day, while cool, exposed skin lets it sit flat. That is the whole logic behind the usual list of spots.

  • The base of the throat and the collarbones. The scent rises towards your face, so you and the people you speak to both notice it.
  • The sides of the neck, just below the ear. This is where someone leans in to greet you, so it suits a scent meant to be found close up.
  • The chest, under your top. Fabric keeps the skin warm and releases the scent slowly as you move, which softens a strong opening.
  • The inner wrists. Easy to reach and easy to smell yourself. Spray, then leave them alone; rubbing them together bruises the opening.
  • The inside of the elbows and the backs of the knees. Good in summer, when bare skin is warm and in motion.

Hold the nozzle about a hand's width from the skin so the mist spreads rather than pooling in one wet spot, and give it a minute to dry before you dress. If you want the full morning routine, with moisturiser, storage and the rest, our guide on how to make perfume last longer covers it step by step.

Perfume on clothes or skin?

Both work, but they give you two different perfumes. On skin, the scent moves through its stages in order: the bright opening, then the heart, then the base that stays with you into the evening. Your own warmth and skin chemistry shape how it unfolds, which is exactly why the same perfume can read differently on two people.

On fabric, the scent changes far less. Wool, cotton and knitwear hold the opening and the heart for a long time, sometimes until the next day, but they never quite reach the soft, close base you get on skin. Fabric also has a catch: perfume oils can mark silk and pale colours, and a scarf that has soaked up several weeks of one scent will clash with the next.

The simplest approach is skin first, then one optional spray on a scarf or a jacket lining if you want the scent to trail behind you. Hair is the third option. It holds scent well, but the alcohol in perfume dries it out, so mist from further away and aim at the lengths, never the roots.

How many sprays of perfume should you use?

Count by strength first. Strength is partly the concentration on the label, since an extrait or a parfum usually carries more fragrance oil than an eau de toilette, but it is just as much about how the formula is built. Bright top notes such as bergamot and lemon rise quickly and fade quickly, so a scent made mostly of them can take more sprays. Dense bases of resins, woods and musk sit on the skin and radiate, so a little goes a long way.

A simple range to start from:

  • Light and fresh scents (citrus, herbs, green and watery notes): three or four sprays.
  • Middle-weight scents (most fruity, floral and soft woody perfumes): two or three sprays.
  • Dense and warm scents (extraits, ambers, resins, heavy sweetness): one or two sprays.

With a perfume you have never worn, start at the low end of its range and add one spray the next day if you want more. Resist the urge to top up after an hour because you can no longer smell it. Your nose stops registering a scent it meets all day long, while the people around you still notice it. Ask someone close before you reach for the bottle again.

How many sprays by occasion

Where you are going moves the count up or down within that range.

  • The office or any shared room. Stay at the low end and keep to the wrists and the base of the throat. Colleagues should notice it only when they are next to you.
  • Dinner or a date. The middle of the range, on the neck and chest, so the scent is found close up rather than announced across the table.
  • A summer day outdoors. Heat lifts perfume faster and open air carries it away, so a fresh scent can take its upper number. A dense one should drop to a single spray.
  • A crowded evening out. One or two sprays of anything warm is plenty in a busy, heated room.
  • The gym, a flight or a hospital visit. One spray on the wrist, or none at all.

The rest of this guide works through eight perfumes in three groups by occasion. For each, we give a starting count and the community votes on how far it carries; your own skin and weather will shift both.

Three sprays for the office: fresh day scents

These four suit a working day. Community voters pick each of them for day wear, and their sillage votes land on moderate, so three sprays is a sensible start.

Torino21 by Xerjoff

Torino21, launched in 2021, opens green and sharp with mint, lemon, basil and thyme. The heart turns herbal and a little fruity, with rosemary, lavender, black currant and a thread of jasmine, before it settles on a clean base of musk and vervain. It is marketed to men.

On sillage, most community voters settle on moderate. Summer days are when voters reach for it, and work is its listed occasion. Three sprays, wrists and throat, is a good start; on a hot day outdoors it can take a fourth.

Blue Talisman by Ex Nihilo

Blue Talisman, a 2023 unisex launch, starts with juicy pear, bergamot, mandarin orange and a spark of ginger. Orange blossom and Georgywood sit in the heart, and the base is a smooth, woody blend of Akigalawood, musk and Ambrofix.

Most community voters rate its longevity moderate. Most voters also put its sillage at moderate, and they pick it for spring and summer days, with work as its listed occasion. Three sprays suits the office; four works on a warm day outside.

Valaya by Parfums de Marly

Valaya, launched in 2023 and marketed to women, opens airy with aldehydes, white peach, bergamot and mandarin orange. The heart is a soft bouquet of orange blossom, lily-of-the-valley, Petalia and Nympheal, lifted by vetiver and mahonia, and it dries down to musk, Ambroxan, Akigalawood and vanilla.

Community votes on its sillage lean moderate, with strong as the runner-up. Voters most often pick it for spring and for day wear, and work is its listed occasion. Because some voters find it carries more, start with two sprays and move to three if it feels quiet on you.

Imagination by Louis Vuitton

Imagination, launched in 2021 and marketed to men, starts bright on citron, Sicilian orange and Calabrian bergamot. In the heart, Tunisian neroli meets a spiced edge of Ceylon cinnamon and Nigerian ginger. Underneath, Chinese black tea rests on guaiac wood, olibanum and Ambroxan.

On sillage, most community voters settle on moderate. Its season votes spread across spring, autumn and winter, and its time-of-day votes cover the day, the office and the evening. That range makes it easy to count: three sprays for the office, two for a dinner.

Two or three sprays for summer days out

These two are brighter and sweeter, and community voters pick both for daytime in the warm months. They suit a lunch, a wedding or a long afternoon outside.

Aventus by Creed

Aventus, launched in 2010 and marketed to men, opens on a fruity burst of apple and black currant, sharpened by lemon, bergamot and pink pepper. At its centre, pineapple sits beside patchouli and Moroccan jasmine. The dry-down turns smoky and dry: birch, oak moss and cedarwood over musk and Ambroxan.

Community votes on its sillage lean strong, with moderate as the runner-up. Voters most often pick it for spring and summer and for day wear, with going out as its listed occasion. Two sprays is plenty for most days; keep a third for open air.

Bal d'Afrique Absolu by Byredo

Bal d'Afrique Absolu, a 2025 unisex launch, starts with blackcurrant, bergamot and lemon. The heart turns sweet and powdery with praline, musk and violet, over a base of black amber, cedarwood and vetiver.

Its sillage draws a clear community verdict of moderate. It is a summer choice in the season votes and a daytime one in the time-of-day votes. Three sprays, including one on the chest, lets the praline show without taking over.

One or two sprays for evenings

These two are the dense end of the scale. Community voters pick both for autumn and winter nights, and their sillage votes lean strong. One spray is often enough; two is the ceiling in a closed room.

Guidance by Amouage

Guidance, launched in 2023 and marketed to women, opens with pear, hazelnut and olibanum. The heart is rich and floral, with osmanthus, rose, saffron and jasmine sambac, and the base is deep and warm, with sandalwood, vanilla, Akigalawood, ambergris and labdanum.

Most community voters rate its longevity eternal. Community votes on its sillage lean strong, with enormous as the runner-up. Voters pick it for autumn and winter and for night and evening wear. Start with one spray at the base of the throat and add a second only if you are heading outdoors.

Baccarat Rouge 540 Extrait by Maison Francis Kurkdjian

Baccarat Rouge 540 Extrait, a 2017 unisex launch, opens with bitter almond and saffron. Egyptian jasmine and Virginia cedar follow, and the base glows with ambergris, woody notes, musk, Ambroxan and cashmeran.

Community votes on its longevity lean eternal, with long lasting as the runner-up. Its sillage votes lean strong, with enormous next. Voters most often pick it for winter and autumn, and for night and evening wear. One spray on the chest, under your top, is a good way to start.

What your spray count means for each size

Once you know your count, you know how far a bottle goes. These are the site's own estimates, and every figure is "around", because nozzles differ.

  • A 3ml decant, around 60 sprays. About two weeks at four sprays a day, or a month at two. Enough to wear a scent properly before deciding.
  • A 10ml decant, around 200 sprays. About seven weeks at four a day, or more than three months at two. Weeks of daily wear, and small enough for a pocket.
  • A 30ml bottle, around 600 sprays. About five months at four a day, or most of a year at two. The size for the scent you reach for, and the best value per ml.

For the arithmetic in more detail, see how long a 10ml bottle of perfume lasts.

Wear it before you buy the bottle

Everything above is a starting point, not a verdict. The right count for you depends on your skin, your climate and your taste, and you only learn it by wearing the scent on ordinary days. A card strip at a counter tells you about the opening; a week on your own skin tells you whether two sprays feel like enough at your desk or whether one is already too much at dinner.

So choose a few from the shortlist above that suit the days you actually live, and take each as a 3ml. Wear it at your count, at the places that work for you, for a week or so. The one you keep reaching for is the one worth a 10ml, and once you know it, a 30ml. Our guide to decants versus the full bottle explains how the sizes compare.

Frequently asked questions

Where should you spray perfume?
Spray perfume on warm skin: the base of the throat, the sides of the neck, the chest and the inner wrists. Hold the bottle a hand's width away, let it dry, and do not rub your wrists together.
How many sprays of perfume should I use?
Usually one to four, depending on strength. Light, fresh scents can take three or four sprays, middle-weight scents two or three, and dense, warm scents or extraits one or two. With a new perfume, start at the low end and add one spray the next day if you want more.
Is it better to spray perfume on clothes or skin?
Skin gives you the whole perfume, from the opening to the base, shaped by your own warmth. Clothes hold the opening longer but change less, and perfume can mark silk and pale fabrics, so spray skin first and add one spray to a scarf or jacket lining only if you want the scent to trail.
How do you apply perfume for the office?
Use the low end of the range for that perfume, usually two or three sprays of a fresh scent, on the wrists and the base of the throat. The people next to you should notice it, not the whole room.
Why can I not smell my own perfume after an hour?
Your nose stops registering a scent it meets constantly, even though the people around you can still smell it. Ask someone close before you spray again, rather than adding more.
How many sprays are in a 3ml, 10ml or 30ml perfume?
A 3ml holds around 60 sprays, a 10ml around 200 and a 30ml around 600. At two sprays a day, that is about a month, more than three months and most of a year.

Wear it for a week, not ten seconds.
