What is extrait de parfum? Strength, wear and whether it is worth it
Extrait de parfum is the most concentrated strength a house sells. Here is what the label means, how it wears next to eau de parfum, and six extraits compared at price per ml.
In this guide
Extrait de parfum is the most concentrated strength a house sells, usually 15 to 30 per cent aromatic compounds. It tends to wear denser and closer to the skin rather than always louder. So the label describes the formula, not how loud the perfume will be. Below we explain what it means, set six extraits beside their plainer versions at live price per ml, and show how to try both in 3ml first.

What extrait de parfum means
Extrait de parfum means extract of perfume. It is the top of a house's strength list, above eau de parfum, eau de toilette and eau de cologne.
The ranges below follow Wikipedia's summary of perfume concentration.
| Strength | Aromatic compounds |
|---|---|
| Extrait de parfum | 15 to 30 per cent |
| Eau de parfum | 15 to 20 per cent |
| Eau de toilette | 5 to 15 per cent |
| Eau de cologne | 2 to 3 per cent |
Wikipedia notes that sources differ considerably on these figures. IFRA typically puts extrait at around 20 per cent. Read the numbers as a guide: each house sets its own formula and chooses its own label.
Wikipedia names Jicky by Guerlain, from 1889, as the first fragrance labelled a parfum extract.
If you want the step below, our guide to eau de parfum vs eau de toilette covers it.

Is extrait stronger on skin?
Not always. A higher share of aromatic compounds means a richer formula, but it does not set the volume. Think of density rather than loudness. An extrait tends to feel denser and sits closer to the skin.
The label also says little about the recipe. An extrait can be a different composition, not simply a stronger pour of the original. Our Baccarat Rouge 540 vs Extrait guide shows two note lists under one name.
Skin, weather and how you apply it matter as much as strength. The habits that help are in how to make perfume last longer.

How to wear an extrait
Use less than you would of a lighter strength. Start with one or two sprays on skin, not on clothes, and wait before adding more.
Apply it where the skin is warm: the chest, the neck or the inner wrists. Keep it away from the bottle's neighbours in your routine, such as a strongly scented body cream, so you can read the perfume itself.
Choose the moment as well as the bottle. Community voters pick most of the extraits above for evening and night wear and for the cooler months, though some votes differ, so let your own wear decide.
Wear both strengths in 3ml before you choose
The easiest way to settle the question is to wear a pair. A 3ml decant gives you around 60 sprays, enough to wear the extrait and its plainer version on different days. A 10ml decant gives around 200 sprays, enough to wear for weeks. A 30ml decant gives around 600 sprays, enough to keep.
For example, Baccarat Rouge 540 Extrait is €20.52 in 3ml, and Baccarat Rouge 540 is €16.11. New to decants? Start with our decant guide.
Wear each on clean skin for a full day, note how it changes, and then decide whether the extrait earns its place or the plainer version is already right for you.
Frequently asked questions
- What is extrait de parfum?
- Extrait de parfum is the most concentrated strength a house sells. On Wikipedia's summary it holds 15 to 30 per cent aromatic compounds, and the same summary says sources differ.
- Is extrait de parfum stronger than eau de parfum?
- It is more concentrated, but not always louder. Extrait holds 15 to 30 per cent aromatic compounds against 15 to 20 per cent for eau de parfum. In wear it tends to feel denser and closer to the skin, and the recipe can be a different composition.
- Does extrait de parfum last longer?
- Not necessarily. In the community votes in this guide, several extraits lean long lasting or eternal on longevity, and some plainer versions vote the same way. Skin, weather and how you apply it change the result.
- Is extrait de parfum worth the higher price per ml?
- It depends on the pair. Compare the price per ml in the table in this guide, then remember you are comparing two different compositions. Wearing both in 3ml is the lowest-risk way to decide.
- How do I try an extrait before buying a bottle?
- Order a 3ml decant of the extrait and one of its plainer version. Each gives around 60 sprays, enough to wear them on different days, and a 10ml or 30ml follows once you know which you prefer.
