What does Amouage Reflection Man smell like?

It is an Eau de Parfum from 2006, credited to Lucas Sieuzac and listed for men. Rosemary, pink pepper and petitgrain open it, so the first impression is herbal, peppery and lightly citrus rather than sweet.

The heart lists jasmine, neroli, orris root and ylang-ylang. Jasmine, neroli and ylang-ylang supply the white-floral side, and orris root adds a dry, powdery thread that gives the flowers some structure. It is the part of the perfume where the herbs step back and the flowers take over.

Both list jasmine and neroli in the heart, with orris root in the 2006 version and iris in the 2021 one. The 2021 version adds tonka bean, vanilla and angelica there, and it puts lavender, juniper berries and clary sage at the top where the 2006 original has rosemary and petitgrain. Its base also reaches further, with olibanum, myrrh and opoponax added.

Sample the older version if its rosemary and petitgrain opening appeals. Choose the 2021 version if lavender, vanilla and resins appeal more. If you cannot decide, wear a 3ml of each on opposite arms and compare after an hour.

A five-day wear test with a 3ml Reflection Man sample

A 3ml decant carries around 60 sprays, so you can wear it on several separate days and notice something different each time. Leave an hour between spraying and judging, so the herbs have faded, and check the woody base again later.

1. Day one: Reflection Man alone. Spray clean, dry skin and do not rub your wrists together. Note the rosemary and pepper, wait an hour, then write down what the flowers are doing and what remains at the end of the day.
2. Day two: repeat the routine. Use the same spot and a similar time of day. Compare your notes with day one and decide whether the iris and neroli sit comfortably for you.
3. Day three: Reflection Man against a second original. Wear it on one arm and Prada L'Homme or Dior Homme Intense on the other, applied the same way. Check after an hour and again in the afternoon, and mark which one you would rather keep wearing.
4. Day four: swap the arms. Repeat day three with the perfumes on opposite arms, so a difference between your wrists cannot make the choice for you.
