What does Reflection Man smell like?

Reflection Man by Amouage launched in 2006 and is made for men. It starts herbal and crisp: rosemary, pink pepper and the bitter green of petitgrain. The heart is a bright bouquet of jasmine, neroli and ylang-ylang, with orris root giving it a cool, powdery finish. Below that sit sandalwood, cedar, vetiver and patchouli, so the white flowers come to rest on smooth, faintly earthy wood. The house describes it on its own Reflection Man page.

The hard part for any clone is the balance. The flowers and the powder have to stay clean and airy, and the woods have to take over without turning sweet or heavy.

Reflection Man or Reflection 45 Man?

Amouage also makes Reflection 45 Man, launched in 2021. It keeps the jasmine, neroli, iris and the sandalwood, cedar, vetiver and patchouli base, then builds a warmer scent around them. Lavender, juniper berries, cardamom and clary sage open it; tonka bean and vanilla soften the heart; olibanum, myrrh and opoponax deepen the base. 1Best overall: Shiyaaka For Men

Shiyaaka For Men by Khadlaj, also sold as Shiyaaka Silver, shares a long list of notes on paper. On Parfumo's comparison page, both perfumes list rosemary, neroli, jasmine, ylang-ylang, iris, vetiver, cedar and patchouli, and a large majority of the members who voted there rate the pair similar. Its Fragrantica listing gives its own pyramid: rosemary, petitgrain and pepper, then neroli, orris and jasmine, then cedar, vetiver and patchouli.

The main difference is a little more sugar and a little less wood. In a Fragrantica forum thread where a member asked for an alternative to Reflection Man, one reply calls Shiyaaka the best Reflection clone. The member who asked went on to buy it and found it very similar, with minor differences: a touch sweeter and not quite as woody.

2Closest on the dry-down: Desert Reflection

Desert Reflection by The Dua Brand is the pick for the finish. Its house names Reflection Man by Amouage as its inspiration and sells it as an extrait de parfum. On Parfumo's comparison page, the two share rosemary, neroli, jasmine, sandalwood and patchouli, and most voting members rate them similar.

The main difference sits at the start and in strength. A Parfumo member finds it far stronger than Reflection Man, with an opening that comes across a little synthetic. Once it reaches the dry-down, that member notices no difference from the original. That is one person's write-up, so read it as a lead, not a verdict.

3Sweeter take: The Run Way

The Run Way by Alexandria Fragrances comes from a house whose own product page presents Amouage Reflection Man as its starting point. On Parfumo's comparison page, most voting members rate the two similar. The sources here give no note list for it, so the shared ground comes from wearers: a Parfumo member who owns both current and vintage Reflection Man finds the heart very close.

The main difference is sweetness that never fades. According to that member, Reflection Man grows woodier and less sweet in the base, while The Run Way keeps its floral sweetness to the end. Members on its Fragrantica page who know the original call the dry-downs very similar, but find The Run Way slightly sweeter, more floral and less woody, with less of the pink-pepper spice. One owner there also finds it less bright.

4Fresher take: Killer Oud Revolution

Killer Oud Revolution by Paris Corner, listed on Fragrantica as Revolution by Killer Oud, shares a long run of notes on paper. Parfumo's comparison page lists bitter orange leaf, rosemary, red pepper, jasmine, iris, ylang-ylang, sandalwood and patchouli for both, and most voting members there rate the pair similar.

The main difference is green where the original is soft. Members commenting on its Fragrantica page say it gets across the idea of Reflection Man and its fresh floral feel, but it turns greener in place of the sweet iris and puts more weight on the citrus top. They are split on how close it really gets.

5Premium alternative: Hartley

Hartley by Mazzolari is the most expensive of the clones we could price. On Parfumo's comparison page, a large majority of voting members rate it similar to Reflection Man. Its listed notes are bergamot, lemon, jasmine, rosemary, lavender, sandalwood, patchouli and cedar, so it shares the rosemary, the jasmine and three of the woods.

The main difference is where it goes after the opening. Members on Hartley's Parfumo page say it begins like Reflection Man, then trades the soft flowers and iris for lavender, citrus and woods, ending up close to a fougère. Another member there finds it rounder and woodier, with a livelier opening.

It suits someone who likes the first impression of Reflection Man but finds its floral, powdery middle too gentle. Basis: named sources, the Parfumo comparison and member write-ups.

6Lowest price: Mystique Homme

Mystique Homme by Al Haramain has the lowest bottle price of the clones we could price, and the weakest resemblance of the seven. The house lists bergamot, elemi, orange, lavender, jasmine, orange blossom, mint, musk, tobacco and guaiac wood. On Parfumo's comparison page, jasmine is the only note the two pyramids share, and only a slim majority of voting members rate them similar.

The main difference, going by the lists, is almost everything: tobacco, guaiac wood and musk stand where the original has orris, sandalwood and vetiver. Wearers disagree. A Parfumo member perceives a stronger, more mature Reflection Man that is less smooth than the Amouage, while another member finds the two completely different.

It suits someone for whom price comes first and who accepts a loose match. Basis: named sources, with the resemblance itself in dispute.

7Darker take: Acqua di Parisis Venezia for Men

Acqua di Parisis Venezia for Men by Reyane Tradition shares cedar, vetiver and patchouli with the original on paper. Parfumo's comparison page lists orange, bergamot and citron, then cardamom and cedar, then patchouli, musk and vetiver, and about half of voting members rate the two similar.

The main difference is more wood and a warmer base, and that rests on one voice. Members on its Parfumo page find it comes quite close to Reflection Man once its fruity citrus top has faded. One of them notes somewhat more woody notes than the Amouage and a base that later drifts toward patchouli and vanilla, which is why it sits under darker here. In a Fragrantica forum thread, an owner who compared the two directly calls them very similar; another member there says it is hard to find.

What every clone gets wrong

Read the sources together and most of the differences they report sit in the hand-over from flowers to woods. Some stay sweet where the original dries out; others drop the powdery flowers too early and turn green, citrusy or fougère-like.

The opening is the second weak spot. A Parfumo member finds the Desert Reflection opening far stronger and a little synthetic, and Venezia members describe a fruity-citrus top that fades. If you only smell a clone on a paper strip in a shop, you judge the part that differs most.

Clone bottle or a decant of the original?

Per ml, every clone with an EU list price on the price-check date costs less than the original, even set against its largest decant. Three of the seven, Desert Reflection, The Run Way and Acqua di Parisis Venezia for Men, had no EU list price we could find, so this guide gives no price for them.

A 10ml decant of Reflection Man is €41.31, or €4.13/ml. The 30ml costs €99.00 (€3.30/ml). Someone already sure of this style, who plans to wear it daily and generously, gets more millilitres per euro from a clone bottle.

Per decision, the sums change. The 3ml, around 60 sprays, costs €15.21. Seven days of wearing it tell you whether Reflection Man itself earns a place, whether a clone will do, or whether neither suits you. Originals with the same iris and woods

Prada L'Homme by Prada, from 2016, opens on neroli, black pepper, cardamom and carrot seeds, puts iris, violet, geranium and mate in the heart, and closes on amber, cedar, sandalwood and patchouli. Prada L'Homme L'Eau, from 2017, lists neroli and ginger, iris and amber, then powdery notes, sandalwood and cedar. How to test a dupe

Judge on skin, never on paper. Give the original one day and the clone a different day, which keeps your nose fresh for each of them. Check each at the same moments: the first spray, once it has settled, and again later in the day. The dry-down is where several sources place the closest match, so give it time before you decide.

A 3ml of Reflection Man, around 60 sprays, gives you a fair week to compare.
