What makes a good summer fragrance

A few qualities help a scent work in warm weather.

• Fresh top notes such as citrus, green notes, herbs and sea notes feel cooling and clean.

Why fresh scents fade faster

The materials that make a fragrance feel fresh, citrus oils, light herbs and many green and aquatic notes, are also the ones that evaporate fastest. On a hot day your skin is warmer and evaporation speeds up further, so a pure citrus cologne can be gone within an hour. That is not a flaw in the perfume; it is simply how those materials behave.
