What oud is

Oud, also called agarwood, comes from the heartwood of Aquilaria trees, which grow in South and Southeast Asia. Healthy wood from these trees is pale and smells of very little. When a tree is wounded and a mould gets in, it defends itself by flooding the wood with a dark, oily resin. That resin-soaked wood is oud. It can be burnt as incense or distilled into an oil, and both have been treasured for a very long time across the Middle East and Asia.

Good natural oud is rare and slow to form, so most perfumes use it sparingly or rebuild its effect with other materials. When a label says "oud", it usually means an oud accord: a blend built to evoke the wood, sometimes with a little of the real oil inside. That is not a trick. Most notes in perfumery are built this way, and it explains why two oud perfumes can smell so unlike each other.

What does oud smell like?

On its own, oud is complex and not always pretty. At the centre it is woody and resinous, darker and denser than cedar or sandalwood. Around that core you may pick up smoke, leather, a dry earthiness, a sweetness close to honey or dried fruit, and, in stronger oils, a barnyard tang that people either love or cannot bear.

Perfumers rarely serve it alone. They soften and steer it with partners, and the partner decides most of what you smell:

• Rose makes it lush and velvety. Rose with oud is a classic pairing of Middle Eastern perfumery and the gentlest place to begin. Our rose note page gathers the rest.
• Saffron brings a warm, leathery, slightly metallic spice, and turns up beside oud more than beside almost any other note. See saffron.

Why oud is so easy to regret buying blind

Oud is the note people most often buy on reputation and then find they cannot wear. The word promises something rich and rare. The reality on your skin could be a soft, rosy wood or a room-filling smoke, and a notes list rarely tells you which. The same four letters cover a quiet office scent and a perfume made for winter nights.

It also changes as it dries. Many oud perfumes open with their brightest notes, and the oud shows its real face later, once those have gone. A spray on a paper strip tells you little. A full day on your own skin tells you a lot.

So do not start with the darkest oud you can find. Start at the soft end, wear it for a few days, and move one step darker only when you want more. The ladder below is built for that. If you are new to choosing from notes alone, read how to choose perfume without smelling it before you pick.

Step one: soft, woody ouds

Oud Wood by Tom Ford

Oud Wood opens with oud, rosewood and cardamom, moves into Sichuan pepper, sandalwood and vanilla, and settles on vetiver, tonka bean and amber. Smooth, creamy wood with a light peppery lift: the oud is there, but polished. It launched in 2007 and is presented for men. Most community voters rate its sillage moderate. Its listed occasion is work, which makes it a natural first rung.

Royal Oud by Creed

Royal Oud starts bright, with pink pepper, lemon and Sicilian bergamot, turns green and woody with cedar, angelica and galbanum, and only then brings in sandalwood, oud and musk. The citrus-and-green opening makes it the freshest oud in this guide. It launched in 2011. Community voters most often pick it for autumn and winter, at the office, by day and in the evening.

Wonderwood by Comme des Garçons

Wonderwood, composed by Antoine Lie and launched in 2010, is a study in woods. Bergamot, Madagascar pepper, caraway and nutmeg lead into cypress, Virginia cedar, incense and vetiver, then sandalwood, guaiac wood, oud, cashmeran and patchouli. Dry, spiced and clean, with oud as one wood among several. Most community voters rate its sillage strong, so go easy with the sprayer.

Step two: rose and oud

Rose is the partner oud is most often paired with, and the easiest way to hear the oud itself without being overwhelmed by it. This step runs from fruity and rosy to deep and dark.

Delina Exclusif by Parfums de Marly

Delina Exclusif opens with litchi, pear, bergamot, grapefruit and pink pepper, then sets Turkish rose beside oud and incense in the heart, over vanilla, amber, woody notes, musk and vetiver. Fruity and rosy at first, with the oud and incense adding shadow underneath. It launched in 2018 and is presented for women. Community votes on its sillage lean strong, then moderate. Halfeti by Penhaligon's

Halfeti begins with cypress leaf, saffron, cardamom, artemisia, bergamot and grapefruit, softens into jasmine, Bulgarian rose and nutmeg, and dries down to oud, cedar, leather, sandalwood, amber, tonka bean, vanilla and musk. Spiced rose on a warm, faintly leathery wood. It launched in 2015. Community votes on its sillage lean moderate, then strong, which makes it an easy next step after the woody ouds.

Noir de Noir by Tom Ford

Noir de Noir opens with saffron and black truffle, blooms into rose, oud and black dahlia, and rests on vanilla, patchouli, tree moss and styrax. A dark rose with an earthy, truffled depth. It launched in 2007 and is unisex. Most community voters rate its longevity long lasting, and autumn and winter evenings are when they reach for it.

Black Aoud by Montale

Black Aoud, launched in 2006, has the shortest formula on this ladder: rose on top, oud and patchouli in the heart, musk underneath. Few notes, none of them shy. Most community voters rate its sillage enormous. It is the bridge between the rosy ouds and the dark ones, so try it before you climb higher.

Step three: sweet and spiced ouds

Here oud meets praline, vanilla, tonka and warm spice. The oud is fuller than on the first two steps, but sugar and spice keep it approachable.

Arabians Tonka by Montale

Arabians Tonka opens with saffron and bergamot, puts oud beside Bulgarian rose in the heart, and sweetens the base with amber, tonka bean, sugar cane, white musk and oakmoss. Sugared rose over oud, the sweet end of the rose-and-oud style. It launched in 2019 and is unisex. Most community voters rate its sillage enormous, so start with a single spray.

Alexandria II by Xerjoff

Alexandria II layers palisander rosewood, lavender, cinnamon and apple over rose, cedar and lily-of-the-valley, with oud, sandalwood, amber, vanilla and musk in the base. Lavender and cinnamon over a warm, sweet wood, with the oud arriving late and staying smooth. It launched in 2012. Community votes on its sillage lean enormous, then strong, so one or two sprays is plenty.

Haltane by Parfums de Marly

Haltane pairs clary sage, lavender and bergamot with saffron and praline, then lets oud and cedar take over. Herbal and sweet at first, then a drier, more serious wood. It launched in 2021 and is presented for men. Most community voters rate its sillage strong. Voters most often pick it for autumn and winter nights.

Red Tobacco by Mancera

Red Tobacco is a crowded, warm composition. Cinnamon, nutmeg, oud, incense, saffron, green apple and white pear come first; patchouli and jasmine sit in the heart; guaiac wood, Haitian vetiver, tobacco, Madagascar vanilla, amber, sandalwood and white musk fill the base. Spiced apple and tobacco over a sweet, smoky wood. It launched in 2017. Community votes on its sillage lean enormous, then strong.

Step four: dark, smoky and leathery ouds

The top of the ladder. Incense, leather and resin, with oud front and centre. Reach for these once you know you like oud in its gentler forms.

Ombre Nomade by Louis Vuitton

Ombre Nomade puts oud at the very start, softened by raspberry, then moves through rose, saffron and geranium to frankincense and benzoin. Smoky, resinous and dark, with a faint berry glow in the first minutes. It launched in 2018 and is unisex. Most community voters rate its longevity eternal. Oud for Greatness by Initio Parfums Prives

Oud for Greatness keeps to a short list: lavender, nutmeg and saffron, then agarwood, then musk and patchouli. A dense, saffron-spiced wood with a lavender lift at the start. It launched in 2018 and is presented for men. Community votes on its sillage lean strong, then enormous.

African Leather by Memo Paris

African Leather lists its notes all at once: cardamom, leather, cumin, saffron, vetiver, patchouli, geranium, oud, bergamot and musk. Spiced, earthy leather, with cumin giving it a warm, skin-like edge. It launched in 2015. Most community voters rate its longevity long lasting.

Interlude Man by Amouage

Interlude Man opens with oregano, pepper and bergamot, burns through incense, opoponax, amber and labdanum, and ends on oud, leather, sandalwood and patchouli. Smoke and resin in quantity, herbal at first and dark by the end. It launched in 2012. Most community voters rate its sillage enormous, so this is one to wear with care.

Epic Man by Amouage

Epic Man starts with a long line of spices and resins: pink pepper, olibanum, saffron, nutmeg, cardamom, caraway, mace and myrtle. Myrrh and geranium follow, and the base gathers incense, oud, leather, castoreum, patchouli, cedar, styrax and musk. Incense and spice over dark wood and leather. It launched in 2009. Community votes on its longevity lean long lasting, then eternal.

How to wear oud

• Start with one spray. Many oud perfumes are dense, so add a second only once you know how the first behaves on you.

• Give it the whole day. Oud often shows its character in the dry-down, hours after you spray, so judge it in the afternoon rather than in the first minute.

Climb the ladder before you buy the bottle

Oud rewards patience, and the only honest way to know which oud suits you is to live with it on your own skin. Here is a simple way to climb the ladder without a blind buy.

1. Take one from each step. Four 3ml decants, one soft, one rosy, one sweet and one dark, give you the whole range. At around 60 sprays apiece, a 3ml covers roughly a week of real wear.
2. Wear them in order. Begin at the soft end and move up only when you want more. Many people stop happily at the rose step, and that is a perfectly good place to stop.
3. Size up once you are sure. A 10ml decant holds around 200 sprays, which carries you through several weeks of daily wear. Where a 30ml is offered, it holds around 600 sprays at the lowest price per ml, for the oud you reach for every cold evening.
