What does Grand Soir smell like?

Bottle of Grand Soir by Maison Francis Kurkdjian
The originalGrand SoirMaison Francis Kurkdjian

Grand Soir by Maison Francis Kurkdjian came out in 2016 as a unisex amber. The house page lists the same notes. Spanish labdanum and orange open it, resinous and lit from within. Lavender and Siam benzoin form the heart, a herbal edge folded into balsam. The base is amber, vanilla, tonka bean, musk and cedar.

Its accords read amber, vanilla, powdery, sweet and aromatic. The trick of it is restraint: plenty of resin and sweetness, held in shape by the lavender and the cedar, so it glows rather than cloys. For more on the family, see what amber smells like in perfume.

Why this field is crowded

Amber built on labdanum, benzoin and vanilla is a familiar structure in perfumery, so many clone houses have a version. What helps here is the evidence: every pick below has its own comparison vote on Parfumo, and each also has members on Parfumo or Fragrantica describing how it differs. One pick, Crater, has a member who finds it very close once the opening has passed, which earns it the "closest" label, with a dissenting voice noted.

Best overall: Eternal Oud

Bottle of Eternal Oud by Lattafa Pride
Eternal OudLattafa PrideBest overall

Eternal Oud by Lattafa Pride leads on the breadth of its backing. On Parfumo's comparison page, nearly four in five voting members call the pair similar, and the vote there is larger than for any other pair in this guide.

Where it differs is the spice and the depth. A Parfumo member writing about Grand Soir finds the two very much alike, with Eternal Oud a little spicier, carrying cinnamon, and Grand Soir deeper once it dries down.

It suits someone who wants the Grand Soir style in a big bottle and accepts a spicier edge in place of the original's depth late in the day. Basis: a named source, Parfumo's vote and one member's write-up.

Lowest price: Soir

Bottle of Soir by Fragrance World
SoirFragrance WorldLowest price

Soir by Fragrance World undercuts the other two priced clones on the bottle and on each ml. On the comparison page, all but 11 voters rate the pair similar.

The difference is movement. The top Parfumo write-up on Soir finds it very close to Grand Soir, the best alternative its author has tested, but fairly linear: powdery-sweet vanilla and amber lead from start to finish, with lavender in the background. The same member had found Eternal Oud too synthetic and too masculine.

It suits someone who wants the powdery vanilla side of Grand Soir for everyday wear and found Eternal Oud too sharp. Basis: a named source, Parfumo's vote and a member write-up.

Softer take: Illusion d'Un Soir

Bottle of Illusion d'Un Soir by FOMO
Illusion d'Un SoirFOMOSofter take

Illusion d'Un Soir by FOMO has the second-largest Parfumo vote here, behind Eternal Oud. On its comparison page, above four in five voters rate it similar to Grand Soir.

The difference is staying power. The top Parfumo write-up on it calls it a younger alternative to Grand Soir, louder and fruitier at first but quicker to fade, and on the comparison page members rate its sillage and longevity a little below Grand Soir's. Read together, the start is brighter and the rest lighter than the original.

It suits someone who finds Grand Soir a little heavy and wants the same amber idea at a lower weight. Basis: a named source, the comparison page and one member's write-up.

Closest on the dry-down: Crater

Bottle of Crater by The Dua Brand
CraterThe Dua BrandClosest on the dry-down

Crater by The Dua Brand has the most direct report of a match once it settles. A member on the Fragrantica forum finds it very close to Grand Soir after the first five minutes, with only the opening differing. Two members writing on Parfumo find it close too, if a little less sweet.

The main difference is the start. One of those Parfumo members finds it more resinous, spicy and dry in the opening, though soft and warm like the original. Not everyone agrees on the rest: a member on the Fragrantica forum who compared the two on skin found Crater nothing like Grand Soir. On the comparison page, the vote is less lopsided: more than three in five voters rate the two as similar.

It suits someone who cares most about how Grand Soir smells an hour in and can live with a spicier first few minutes, ideally checked against a 3ml of the original. Basis: a named source, a forum member's comparison, two Parfumo members and Parfumo's vote, with one dissent.

Darker take: Noir Vocalist

Bottle of Noir Vocalist by MonKoku
Noir VocalistMonKokuDarker take

Noir Vocalist by MonKoku, a 2026 release, shares a good part of Grand Soir's published structure. Parfumo's comparison finds lavender, cinnamon, benzoin, labdanum, tonka and vanilla in both, and all but two of its voting members call the pair similar, from a small group.

The main difference is leather. Parfumo classifies it as more leathery than Grand Soir, and a Parfumo member describes it as dark, resinous and smoky. Not all are won over: another member finds it old-fashioned.

It suits someone who likes the resin in Grand Soir and wants a smokier, leather-edged evening version. Basis: a named source, Parfumo's comparison and two members' notes.

Fresher take: Paris Night

Bottle of Paris Night by Alexandria Fragrances
Paris NightAlexandria FragrancesFresher take

Paris Night by Alexandria Fragrances is built on the resin core. Fragrantica lists amber, Siam benzoin, tonka bean, vanilla and Spanish labdanum, all five of them in Grand Soir's own outline, though not its lavender or orange.

Where it parts from Grand Soir is in body. On that Fragrantica page, one member calls it a fresher, slightly lighter take on Grand Soir and another likens it to a summer version of the original. A member who wore the two on opposite wrists found Paris Night lighter and Grand Soir deeper and scratchier, more labdanum to that nose, and a Parfumo member also finds it a bit lighter and more feminine. Other Fragrantica members describe a rough first half hour or a sticky honey note Grand Soir does not have. The vote is the thinnest here: on the comparison page, just over half of a small group of voting members rate the pair similar.

It suits someone who finds Grand Soir too dense for milder evenings and wants its amber with less weight, judged after the opening has settled. Basis: a named source, Fragrantica members' comparisons, one Parfumo member and Parfumo's vote.

Why this pick?Sources: 5

  2. A Fragrantica member who wore the two on opposite wrists finds them very similar, Paris Night lighter and Grand Soir deeper and scratchier, which that member puts down to more labdanum. Paris Night by Alexandria Fragrances (Fragrantica)
  3. A Parfumo member finds it clearly inspired by Grand Soir, a bit lighter and a bit more feminine, though not quite the original's equal. Paris Night, member statement (Parfumo)
  4. Parfumo's comparison page shows 20 of 37 voting members finding Paris Night similar to Grand Soir. Paris Night vs Grand Soir (Parfumo comparison)
  5. Other Fragrantica members describe a rough opening that settles after about half an hour, or a sticky honey note that Grand Soir does not have. Paris Night by Alexandria Fragrances (Fragrantica)

Where the clones part from Grand Soir

Three patterns run through the write-ups. Spice is the first: Eternal Oud carries more of it, and Crater does at the start. Depth is the second: the member who compared it with Eternal Oud, and the one who wore it against Paris Night, both find Grand Soir the deeper of the two. Shape is the third: Soir is described as linear, holding powdery vanilla and amber throughout.

Grand Soir's own outline moves from labdanum and orange through lavender and benzoin to a cedar-and-musk base. A clone that stays on the vanilla from the first spray skips that journey, which is worth knowing before you buy 100ml.

Clone bottle or a Grand Soir decant?

Three clones carry a price in the table: Soir in an 80ml bottle, Eternal Oud in 100ml and Noir Vocalist in 50ml. Illusion d'Un Soir, Crater and Paris Night show "No EU list price found", because we could verify no euro price for any of them. Each of the three priced clones works out far below a Grand Soir decant per ml.

Start with the 3ml: around 60 sprays for €15.48. A few evenings with it show whether you love the lavender-and-resin arc or only the vanilla, and that answer decides whether a linear clone will satisfy you. If the original wins, a 10ml decant is €40.23 (€4.02/ml), and the 30ml, which holds around 600 sprays, comes to €100.80, or €3.36/ml. Across the catalogue, our price per ml index and the guide to decants versus full bottles do the maths.

Amber originals from other houses

We stock four perfumes that sit near Grand Soir's resin and vanilla. Musc Ravageur by Frederic Malle opens on lavender, tangerine and bergamot, adds cinnamon and cloves, and settles on musk, vanilla, tonka and amber: spicier and muskier. Outlands by Amouage carries benzoin, labdanum, amber and vanilla in its base under a crowded spice and incense top, a spicier, more aromatic route. Blonde Amber by Clive Christian, sold as a 3ml or 10ml, lays rum, dried fruits and tuberose over tonka, vanilla, myrrh and labdanum, a boozier amber. Shalimar Eau de Parfum by Guerlain pairs bergamot and lemon with vanilla, opoponax, tonka and incense, the classic take with a leathery edge.

Each comes as a decant, so one can share a week with Grand Soir. From the same house, see our Baccarat Rouge dupes and Oud Satin Mood dupes guides, and for another warm, sweet evening scent, the Tobacco Vanille dupes. Colder evenings call for richer scents generally; our winter perfumes for women has more.

How to test a Grand Soir dupe

One write-up puts the gap in the dry-down, another at the start, so judge both. Wear Grand Soir one evening and the clone the next, on skin. Note in the first minutes whether the orange and labdanum read bright, then whether the lavender survives into the heart, and finally, in the evening once both have settled, whether the clone still has depth or has flattened into vanilla and spice.

Three or four evenings are enough with a 3ml. If Grand Soir wins, the 30ml is the size made for a scent you return to every cold night. New to decants? Read what a decant is and how it is filled first, and the blind-buy guide shows why a small size beats a guess.

Clone or original? What to know first

Can I wear Grand Soir for a few evenings before buying a clone?
Yes. 10ML fills Grand Soir from the original bottle as a 3ml, 10ml or 30ml decant. For €15.48, you get a 3ml of around 60 sprays, which covers several evenings next to a clone.
Which MFK Grand Soir dupe tops this guide?
Eternal Oud by Lattafa Pride. On Parfumo, nearly four in five voting members find it similar to Grand Soir, and more members have voted on it than on any other pick here. One member finds it a little spicier and Grand Soir deeper in the dry-down.
Do I need both Soir and Eternal Oud?
Not necessarily. Soir's top write-up on Parfumo comes from a member who found Eternal Oud too synthetic and too masculine and prefers Soir, a linear, powdery vanilla and amber. Wear each against a Grand Soir decant before buying both.
Which Grand Soir clone is closest on the dry-down?
Crater by The Dua Brand. A Fragrantica forum member finds it very close to Grand Soir after the first five minutes, and two Parfumo members find it close but a little less sweet. Another forum member found it nothing like Grand Soir, so test it first.
How do Grand Soir clones compare per ml with a decant?
Per ml, all three priced clones come in far below a Grand Soir decant. The original costs €40.23 for a 10ml decant (€4.02/ml); to find out first whether you love it, the 3ml is €15.48.
Which Grand Soir clone is the darker take?
Noir Vocalist by MonKoku. Parfumo classifies it as more leathery than Grand Soir and one member calls it dark, resinous and smoky, though another finds it old-fashioned.
Will Grand Soir last through an evening on me?
No figure fits everyone: skin, season and the number of sprays all shift it. A 3ml lets you wear it on a few real evenings and see for yourself before choosing a 30ml or a clone.
