What does Oud Satin Mood smell like?

Oud Satin Mood by Maison Francis Kurkdjian launched in 2015 and is made to be worn by anyone. The house's own page sells it as an eau de parfum. It opens on two roses, Bulgarian and Turkish, so the first thing you meet is rose, not wood. The heart brings violet, a soft and slightly powdery floral, beside benzoin, a warm balsamic resin. The base is oud with vanilla: the agarwood gives depth, and the vanilla rounds it off so the wood feels plush rather than sharp.

Six notes in all. 10ML stocks it in one version, the eau de parfum, so there is no Extrait to choose between here.

1Best overall: Oud Satin

Oud Satin by Paris Corner, part of the house's Ministry of Oud line, has the fullest match on paper. Its Fragrantica listing gives Bulgarian rose and oud, then Turkish rose and benzoin, then violet and vanilla. Those are the six notes of the original, arranged in a different order.

The main difference is the opening. One Fragrantica member who owns both this and Barakkat Satin Oud, and has tried the original, finds Oud Satin the closer of the two: a softer rose start and a smoother oud, though still not as smooth as the original. Other members there say a new bottle needs a few weeks of rest before its harsh opening settles.

It suits someone who wants the whole note list of the original in a large bottle, and who is patient enough to let it sit before judging it. Basis: a named source. Parfumo runs a comparison page for the pair.

2Closest on the dry-down: Barakkat Satin Oud

Barakkat Satin Oud by Fragrance World is the pick for the later hours. Its Fragrantica entry names Oud Satin Mood as its reference point and lists violet on top; Bulgarian rose, Turkish rose and Laotian oud in the heart; agarwood, vanilla, amber and benzoin in the base. Every note of the original is on that list, with amber added.

The main difference is the start. One owner there finds the opening a little alcoholic for about half an hour, after which it becomes pretty close to the original. Another describes a rose-water start that gets closer and closer to the original as it develops.

There is also a naming question. Fragrantica members report that the Barakkat bottle has been replaced by B Satin Oud. One says Fragrance World told them only the packaging changed; another, who owns both, finds B Satin Oud sweeter from the start and more linear. The Barakkat bottle is also hard to find: on our price-check date, no EU shop we checked had it in stock, which is why its table row carries no price. If you buy the renamed B Satin Oud instead, expect that split of opinion.

It suits someone who judges a scent by how it ends rather than how it begins, and who does not mind a sharper first half hour. Basis: a named source, the two Fragrantica pages above.

3Lowest price: Impulse Oud

Impulse Oud by Zimaya is the least expensive bottle among the priced clones, both overall and per ml. On Parfumo its list runs vanilla, violet and Bulgarian rose, then rose, benzoin and oud, then amber, musk and woody notes. So it shares the Bulgarian rose, violet, benzoin, oud and vanilla of the original, and adds amber, musk and woods.

The main difference is sweetness. On its Fragrantica page, members call it a friendlier-priced interpretation of Oud Satin Mood rather than a perfect match. One owner finds it fresher, less sweet and less powdery than the original. Another, who owns both, finds the original the sweeter of the two.

4Sweeter take: Nostalgia

Nostalgia by Alexandria Fragrances pushes the other way. Its Fragrantica listing gives Turkish rose, Bulgarian rose, Laotian oud, vanilla, benzoin and violet, the six notes of the original. The house's own description presents it as its take on MFK Oud Satin Mood: candied violet over Bulgarian rose, Turkish rose absolute and Laotian oud, with a vanilla-amber finish.

The main difference is texture as much as sugar. An owner who wore it against the original finds it very close, but sweeter, oilier, more incense-like and less natural-smelling. A second owner who compared the two finds the opening different and the dry-down the weakest part. The two reports do not agree on where it gets close, so treat it as a sweeter cousin rather than a stand-in.

It suits someone who likes the candied side of the violet best and wants more sweetness than the original gives. Basis: a named source, the Fragrantica page and the house's own description.

5Premium alternative: Satin Midnight

Satin Midnight by The Dua Brand is sold as an extrait de parfum. The house names Oud Satin Mood by MFK as its reference and lists Bulgarian rose, Turkish rose, benzoin, vanilla, oud and violet. Its Fragrantica listing gives the same six notes and files it as an extrait de parfum too.

The main difference is the format. The original is an eau de parfum on the house's page; Satin Midnight is labelled an extrait. It suits someone who wants the original's exact note list in an extrait and is comfortable deciding from the listing rather than owner reports. Basis: a named source, the house's page and Fragrantica.

6Softer take: Perpetual Oud

Perpetual Oud by Zara takes the quietest route. One member on its Fragrantica page finds it vaguely reminiscent of Oud Satin Mood, with a similar clean, powdery oud and a vanilla-sweet rose.

The main difference is how much oud there is. The same member finds much less of it, used sparingly as a soft base, and misses the violet and the strong balsamic notes. The dry-down turns earthy with patchouli and vetiver. Zara's own description calls it a woody floral in which vetiver and patchouli give the oud an earthy texture, wrapped in a leather accord.

It suits someone who wants less oud and less balsam than the original, prefers an earthier finish, and accepts a loose resemblance: vaguely reminiscent, in that member's words. Basis: a named source, one Fragrantica member and the house's own description.

What every clone gets wrong

The note list is not the problem. Four of the six clones in this guide list every note of the original, and Impulse Oud shares most of them. Where owners find a gap, it sits at the edges: the first minutes and the level of sweetness.

The openings draw the most remarks. Members describe a harsh start on Oud Satin that settles after weeks of rest, an alcoholic first half hour on Barakkat Satin Oud, and a different opening on Nostalgia. Sweetness splits both ways: one owner finds Nostalgia sweeter than the original, while Impulse Oud comes across as less sweet. Even the member who finds Oud Satin the closer of two clones still finds the original smoother.

That pattern makes sense for a short formula. When a perfume has only a handful of notes, there is nowhere to hide a rough material or an extra spoon of sugar. Rose, violet and vanilla are easy to name on a list; the owner remarks above point instead to openings, sweetness and, for one member, smoothness.

Clone bottle or the original in a small size?

Counted by the millilitre, each priced clone in the table comes in under the original, including its 30ml. Barakkat Satin Oud, Nostalgia and Satin Midnight carry no EU list price there, so they sit outside that sum. For the original, you pay €52.11 for the 10ml decant, which works out at €5.21/ml, while the 30ml brings it down to €4.14/ml at €124.20. Once you are sure of the style and want to use it generously, a clone bottle buys more volume.

Authentic perfumes in the same family

If you like rose and oud together but want it from another bottle, four originals we stock share part of the idea. Oud Silk Mood by Maison Francis Kurkdjian, launched in 2017 and credited to Francis Kurkdjian, keeps the roses, oud, benzoin and vanilla, and adds saffron, papyrus and labdanum for a spicier, more resinous sibling. Velvet Rose Oud by Jo Malone London sets damask rose and oud with clove, praline and clary sage over patchouli and vanilla.

Noir de Noir by Tom Ford, credited to Tom Ford, places rose and oud between saffron and black truffle on top and vanilla, patchouli, tree moss and styrax below: the earthiest of the four. Arabians Tonka by Montale pairs oud and Bulgarian rose with saffron and bergamot, then settles on amber, tonka bean, sugar cane, white musk and oakmoss. How to test a dupe

A blotter flatters a rose-oud; your wrist is the fairer judge. Give the original a day to itself, then give the clone a separate day, so your impression of one does not bleed into the other. Compare the two at three points: the opening, the heart, and the dry-down late in the day. With this family, weigh the finish more than the start: several owners quoted above describe openings that shift or settle.
