Four shops side by side: sets, gift cards, delivery to Spain

By contrast, 10ML sells every perfume in sizes people wear: a 10ml perfume holds around 200 sprays and a 3ml perfume around 60. Its surprise box is aimed at this very situation: you say who the gift is for, add one perfume they love and one they dislike if you know them, and the shop chooses the decants. That is a smart route for a buyer with a little information. It has no gift card that we could find, and it offers no set builder. Its free-delivery threshold is lower than 10ML's.

Perfumeza

Perfumeza is the most flexible of the three rivals. You can build your own discovery set from a long list, including 10ml decants, and a complete set earns a discount on the decants. Its digital gift card arrives instantly or on a date you pick, which is better than 10ML's card if you want the present to land on a specific morning.

Fraganlux

Fraganlux sells packs of three named perfumes in 5ml or 10ml, so a pack feels closer to a small wardrobe than a sample strip. It has no builder, so you take the pack as it comes. Its gift card has an optional send date and a short message, and its delivery is always express. Its free-delivery threshold is also lower than 10ML's.

The rivals beat 10ML on entry price and on delivery terms: Decants.es and Fraganlux start free delivery sooner, Perfumeza lets you build the set, and both Perfumeza and Fraganlux let you pick the day a gift card is sent. 10ML wins on what ends up in the recipient's hands, a perfume in a size made for wearing.

The catalogue is original designer and niche perfume, offered in 3ml, 10ml and 30ml, with every perfume available in all three. To be exact about the sourcing: 10ML buys from authorized EU distributors and directly from the brands. Every perfume is decanted by 10ML itself. Hundred Silent Ways by Nishane

Hundred Silent Ways arrived in 2016. Tuberose, peach and mandarin orange open, gardenia, jasmine and orris follow, and vanilla, sandalwood and vetiver hold the base. Fall and winter are the seasons community voters pick it for most.

XJ 1861 Naxos by Xerjoff

XJ 1861 Naxos, from 2015, heads the set for him. Lavender, bergamot and lemon come first. Honey, cinnamon, cashmeran and jasmine sambac form the middle, and tobacco leaf, vanilla and tonka bean the base. The community mostly calls its sillage "strong".

Layton was launched in 2016. Apple, lavender, bergamot and mandarin orange open it, geranium, violet and jasmine follow, and vanilla, cardamom, sandalwood and patchouli carry the base. Layton gets chosen most for fall and winter by community voters.

Erba Pura by Xerjoff

Erba Pura, launched in 2019, belongs to the third set. Its top is Sicilian orange, Calabrian bergamot and Sicilian lemon, the heart is fruits, and the base is white musk, Madagascar vanilla and amber. On longevity, community votes lean "eternal".

Ani by Nishane

Ani also launched in 2019. Ginger, bergamot, pink pepper and green notes come first, cardamom, black currant and Turkish rose follow, and vanilla, benzoin, sandalwood, cedar, patchouli, ambergris and musk close. The community mostly rates its longevity "long lasting".

Arabians Tonka by Montale

Arabians Tonka launched in 2019 too. Saffron and bergamot lead into agarwood and Bulgarian rose, and the base is amber, tonka bean, sugar cane, white musk and oakmoss. The community mostly rates its sillage "enormous".

How to decide before you buy

Start with one question: do they lean towards sweet, fresh or woody scents? What they already wear, or a bottle on their dresser, usually answers it. Our perfume gift guide covers more ideas on what to give.

• If you really know nothing, choose the gift card, or a set of three different perfumes.
